HDD recording error
HDD recording error
My V2 was perfectly until recently. It has a 2TB disk that is 86% empty.
Recently, a couple of times I have noticed when programs were due to start recording a brief error message flashed up stating the HDD was full and it couldn't be recorded.
When I emptied the trash it recorded the next event, even though there was very little in the trash. Then it happened again.
How can I fix it please?

Re: HDD recording error
The disk usage/free statistics should count everything that's in trash as being used.
Can you say exactly what the error message was? More recent versions (like the current beta, 20210119) give more informative HDD errors. Older firmware like the most recent official firmware (20191106) report "Write error while recording. Disk full? / Recording name", whether the cause of the write error was the disk actually being full or not. Newer versions try to be more informative and less misleading.
Which firmware version are you running (MENU>Information>About>Revision)?

Re: HDD recording error
Check MENU > Information > Devices to check the mount point, perhaps it's no longer /media/hdd (if you've rebooted after installing an SD card or with another USB drive the drive order may have changed).

Re: HDD recording error
Thanks. I have checked and its /dev/sdd and then on the line below /dev/sdd1
If that's wrong, how to I fix it and point it to the right location?

Re: HDD recording error
MENU>Information>Devices doesn't tell you what the mount points are, but if you have a /dev/sdd listed, it sounds like you have more than one USB device. Is there a /dev/sdc listed? Maybe you could post a screenshot of the Devices info page?
/dev path names are the names of devices. Names like /media/hdd are places where devices are mounted as part of the filesystem (which is viewed as a single filesystem, no matter how many individual devices make it up).

Ah, knew I should have checked. It tells you that a device is mounted, but not where; OpenATV is opposite, giving the mount point, but not the device (although context provides a reasonable guess). Should probably add it, but I'm not sure where (doesn't help that half the screen is lost for an icon

It would be useful having both. Adding fields to the About displays isn't simple. If I were to make the changes I made to it now, I'd do things differently (probably use named templates).

Re: HDD recording error
What shows up as the path when you open the media selection listing, or the HDD in File Commander (MENU>>Sources / Files) when you select a file or folder (not the "<List of Storage Devices>" entry)?
Have you rebooted?
Re: HDD recording error
Some of the previous comments don't mean much to this technical cretin.Grumpy_Geoff wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 13:26What shows up as the path when you open the media selection listing, or the HDD in File Commander (MENU>>Sources / Files) when you select a file or folder (not the "<List of Storage Devices>" entry)?

There are two columns shown but they are the same on both the left and the right.
V2 (Black USB3 Slot)
Internal Flash
DLNA.
The sub-menu below V2 is
<List of storage Devices>
.Trash
backup
lost+found
movies
timeshift
The movie folder has a heap of stuff in it.
I have rebotted.

So when you select "backup" or "movies" or "timeshift" (for example) what path is shown at the very top underneath the day, date, and time line?

Re: HDD recording error
That's the bit I was interested in (except that it says "Back", not "Black" - the USB3 slot is the blue slot, not the black slot
That shows that there's only one USB device attached, and nothing in the microSD slot, which is what I'd expected from your earlier description, apart from /dev/sdd showing up in the Devices screen.
But you haven't answered Grumpy_Geoff's question.
In File Commander, you need enter the V2 (Back USB Slot) diorectory, then scroll down to one of the entries below <List of Storage Devices>. The path that Grumpy_Geoff is talking about is in yellow, just below the date/time in the top left.
In the media selection screen, (MEDIA from live TV), the path is on the top right of the screen.

Re: HDD recording error
Here's a sample image using mount point instead of device name. Another approach could be to reduce the side of the wide name and have the device/network as is and the mount point where the size is (would the network name be that long?), always using two lines.

Re: HDD recording error
It's a neat dodge of the formatting issues
But it won't work well for multi-partition (multi-volume) drives, and it's not really explicit about what's mounted where . Say I have a two-partition drive, and I unmount one partition... there isn't really enough information to know what the state is.
The multi-partion issue doesn't exist for network mounts.

Re: HDD recording error
That's where the educated guess comes in - all partitions are listed, so if you've got
then it's a fair bet that /media/hdd is /dev/sda2. The two line approach is probably better, though. Here's how that could look. Hm, could probably even shift the mount so it's between type & size.
Code: Select all
/dev/sda1 Not mounted
/media/hdd ...

Re: HDD recording error
The problem with the "educated guess" approach is that's exactly what's failing in the current topics about HDD problems.

So this is a transient issue right?
Have you checked the HDD cable connections are tight in case it's a dodgy drive connection?
Take a look at one of the recently failed timers. Open the timers list, then locate one of those failed timers that are shown at the bottom ot the timers list (they'll be marked "done!" now). Select one of them and press the INFO (i) button. Take a screenshot/photo of the timer log entries that are shown and attach it to a post here.
What do you have defined for settings "Default movie location", "Timer recording location", and "Instant recording location" in the "Recording and playback" settings screen (MENU>>Setup>>TV>>Recording settings)?

Re: HDD recording error
I think I prefer the two-line approach over squeezing the mount point between the filesystem type and size.

Re: HDD recording error
Another approach. The type is small, so move it above the free, allowing more space for the server name. I've also restored the partition indentation, accidentally removed. The server mount is indented twice, it should only be once (or not, to keep it aligned with the partitions).

Re: HDD recording error
I'd prefer something more like this (cut/paste mockup):
The mount point isn't subsidiary to the device. If anything, it's the other way round (the device is mounted on the mount point).
Perhaps the mount point should align horizontally with the device type (which would make room for longer mount point paths), but in that case, I'm not sure how the size and free space should align.
I'm not sure how compatible those preferences are with the column layouts.

Re: HDD recording error
For comparison here's the current:
and my latest:
Either unmounted should add /dev/ or mounted should remove it; unmounted should also still be indented. Given the placement of "Not mounted" that's probably where the mount point should go, with type and size on the next line. That won't work with the longer server lines, which depends on just how long they could be: if really long, move the type up and have the mount on the next line (as "new" currently does); if not so long, have the mount on the same line (but still shifted from where the volume mount is; like "2" or "3" does).

Re: HDD recording error
I'd go for always displaying /dev. It's still a device whether it's mounted or not. /dev/sdc1 and /media/sdc1 are unambiguous. If the path prefixes are left off, they're not.

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the assistance.

Cables are all tight. Disconnected and reconnected was the first thing I did followed by a power down and turn back on.
I had a look at the timers and nothing shows as failed.
Default movie location is /media/hdd/movie
Timer recording and instant recording location is /<Default movie location>
It may have fixed itself?
Thanks for the assistance.

It's the Revision number that Geoff has asked for, not the Release. The naming of Beyonwiz firmware releases is a bit unfortunate. The version number that you've give is the Release number of the build environment, not an identifier of any particular release. The firmware release is in the Build and Revision fields in MENU>Information>About. The version number you've given is the Release field.
The Revision (or Build) is an 8-digit date of the version in compact ISO format. The most recent official Revision is 20191106, and the most recent beta Revision is 20210119.
There have been at least 28 Revisions/Builds in Release 19.3.

Re: HDD recording error
Murphy was bloody optimist! Turned it on the the Wiz appeared to be frozen. Power it down and back up and when it finished it ws showing the Wiz screen, so it didn't look like it had completed the boot. So I downloaded the latest firmware and installed it. When I finished it was still not right. No TV picture. WTF
Its now functioning again, which is a very long winded way of saying the V2 now has the latest firmware installed, instead of the original that was installed when it arrived.
