Tuner C not working

Post by Sandy B » Wed Feb 10, 2021 12:25

Yesterday I received the new V2 and find I can not get the third tuner to function. It is connected to the booster/splitter via it's own cable and I have tried reversing the antenna cables with the internal tuners, tuners A & B work with either cables, however tuner C does not work with either. Currently the tuner is mounted directly to the V2 via the USB 2 port. Menu>Information>Devices indicates that the tuner is detected

A further problem exists with the V2 is that twice in the last 24 hours it has frozen and would not respond to the remote, it was recording 2 programs at the time. The only way to recover with a power off and a reboot. I am not sure if this is related to the above-mentioned problem or something else.

Hoping someone has a simple answer.

Shutdown the V2 to deep standby, then swap the ports - try the HDD in the USB2 port and the tuner in the USB3 port.

What exactly is reported (screenshot)?

Tuner C still not working.

Not quite sure about transferring screenshot, however it says for tuner C

Assuming that the HDD now in the USB2 port is working, this eliminates a port issue.
The Realtek tuner is correctly identified in both USB ports as the "bluey", and it has the correct mode.

How exactly are you testing the USB tuner and deciding that it isn't working?

Tried recording 3 programs from 3 different networks, only 2 worked.

Tried recording 2 programs and changing channel to third network, picture freezes when changing channel

When changing stations, information ribbon indicate 0% for tuner C

Sure sign of lack of an available tuner.
I can only think this is either (i) a connection/cabling problem, or (ii) a tuner problem (even though it's detected and in the correct mode, in my experience they normally just die and won't be detected).

I can only think this is either (i) a connection/cabling problem,
Just before receiving your post I had the same thought, checked that the antenna cable was fully pushed in, which it was/is.

Should I contact Beyonwiz?

The tuner is not hot-swappable. Have you rebooted with it in place (not just restart the GUI)?

Other than the above test of boot from deep standby, I'd say yes

I wonder if this is the later model with the Rafael Micro R828D or R828D2, in place of the older R820T and R820T2 tuner chips.
If you still have it, can you please attach a copy of the /var/log/messages file when the Wiz was booted with the USB tuner attached.

Thanks for the post. I was having trouble adding the 3rd tunner. I powered down the WizV2 moved the hard disk from the USB 3.0 slot to the USB (2.0) slot and reformated it. Naturally I lost all my data but that was my choice. I plugged in the USB (3.0) extender in the USB 3.0 slot and added the Wifi adaptor and the USB TV receiver. I plugged the TV cable from the USB TV receiver to the WizV2. I checked that all three receivers were listed. I am expecting that far less picture freezes.

One option for getting rid of picture freezes is to select media from the WizV2 and then select a file to play then stop the recording. You will be taken to the channel you had selected without the picture freeze. This saves you getting up.

To view it, press TEXT instead of OK. It will be too long to view in a single screenful, though. You can use File Commander to copy it to a USB stick on the V2.

Shut down the V2, disconnect the HDD, connect the USB stick, restart, ignore the popup whinging about not being able to start timeshift, use File Commander (MENU>Sources / Files) to copy /var/log/messages to the USB stick, shut the V2 down, move the USB to a PC, change the file's name name to messages.txt, then attach it to a post in this topic.

Reattach the HDD to the V2 and start it normally.

You press TEXT to view it, but I want to look in the file contents.
If you don't have a spare USB port, you can use File Commander to copy it to /media/hdd/movie on the hard drive. You can then use your computer to retrieve it from there by browsing the V2's "Movie" share.
You may have to give the retrieved file a ".txt" extension to attach it to the forum.

Perhaps enable debug logging, then force the use of the USB tuner and let's see if that reveals anything.

Is Tuner C _enabled_ in SETUP>>Tuners>>Tuner configuration?

I'm still happy to look at the debug log if you want.

Not so sure it is the tuner now. I have tried to make a WLAN connection, while the network activates it does not connect. I tried the same WiFi dongle in my T4 (T4 usually uses LAN). A WLAN connection was achieved within a minute with the T4, so WiFi dongle is good.

Could these 2 problems be related, I suspect there is something wrong within the V2.

Well I give up. I tried a firmware re-flash:

1. Still not able to activate tuner C
2. Still not able to connect via WLAN, it says the says network is activated but after the network test it does not connect. Again I have no problem with a WLAN connection with the T4, using the same dongle.

Hopefully someone has some answers.

I must say I am very disappointed with Beyonwiz, after contacting them via email on the last Wednesday (10-02-21), which was acknowledged I have not heard anything from them.

Does Menu >> Information >> Network show a realistic IP address, the correct gateway and network mask for the wlan?

I have had to manually enter these parameters rather than rely on DHCP for the wireless adapter on the U4. The V2 may be similarly affected.

I've not had any problems with the USB tuners on my U4s. The firmware does include drivers for the tuner so obviously it should work. I assume the HDD storage is being detected and is operational on the USB port.

Accordingly, after a reboot it should just work. However, one of my Bluey tuners on the T3 stopped working for no apparent reason. Detected ok but no picture or sound. Yours could be dead too. I confirmed mine was dead by trying to use it in the PC.

Above is a complete blank.

Procedure followed Menu>>Setup>>Network>>Network adapter selection>>WLAN connection network wizard>>Configure your network>>Scan available network>>selected my home network "Asus">>Enable 8192eu wirlees network interface "on", Automatic configuration (DHCP) "on", Network name (SSID) "Ausu", Encryption "Unencrypted">>OK>>Network test>>Your internet connection is not working!. Check of Information still blank.

BTW there is no problem with LAN, IP 192.168.1.10

When you change the encryption type (away from "Unencrypted") to, hopefully, "WPA2" (I don't have a wireless dongle connected ATM so I can't check).

The "WPA2" was the missing link, connection established. Double silly me.

Many thanks Grumpy_Geoff.

Tomorrow I will get back to tuner C, however I have really run out of ideas now apart from a faulty tuner. Any body have any idea how I could test it. I assume plugging into a T4 would not solve anything.

As I mentioned earlier, you can try to use the tuner on a PC. I have software defined radio (SDR) installed and it will use a realtek chipset as the tuner if asked. Bit convoluted to do though.

BTW does anybody know what is happening with Beyonwiz/DTC:

1. Sent 2 emails to date which remain unanswered.
2. Countless phone calls only to be told currently very busy and call back latter. Looks like a lot of people are complaining.

Again not happy.

What's going on with that wireless dongle of yours? There's lots of this stuff in the messages log -

Code: Select all

Ignoring the "rt2x00usb" entries, I don't know what this means but it looks like a demuxer buffer couldn't be created to hold the DVB transport stream data, whether that's on the tuner or V2 I couldn't guess -

Given that tuners A & B work would that indicate that it is the tuner and not the V2.

I know you're in Perth, whereabouts? I may be able to pay you a visit with a tuner to try if you're not a cut lunch and water bag away.

I live in Gwelup, however I would be very willing to take the V2 and tuner to you for a quick check.

That's close by, Gwelup Shopping Centre is about 10 mins from me. Send me a PM, and we can organise a time.

Have you received my PM, I noticed that the item is still in my out box. Not sure if I am doing something wrong.

Yep, just saw it and replied.
The PM will sit in your outbox until I view it.

I used to ride my pushie around there as a kid. I remember helping a school friend out on their family market garden somewhere just off Gribble Rd there.

Quick update, with the much appreciated help of Grumpy_Geoff he/we discovered that it was a faulty antenna MCX pig tail cable.

Again many thanks to Grumpy, for his assistance in resolving the matter.
