Mis-coding of non-ASCII characters (mostly) fixed

Post by prl » Sun Sep 08, 2019 12:29

Daniel Hall has told me that the IceTV servers are now using a new (and different) JSON library. This has fixed most of the cases where non-ASCII characters in the IceTV data were being mangled by the JSON library formerly being used.

The changes also appear to have got rid of inappropriate Unicode REPLACEMENT CHARACTERs (usually displayed as a while question mark in a black diamond) and allowed the correct characters through. Where the REPLACEMENT CHARACTERs appeared when the old library was used, they were also mis-encoded.

The mis-encoding problems have not all gone away, there are still some errors in the IceTV database that result in inappropriate text display. For example, in Movie: Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time (7flix 20:30, Fri, 13 Sep): "Only the dagger can unlock the sands of time – only Dastan can ensure its safety." Here, the characters are being correctly encoded by the JSON library (as far as I can tell): the problem seems to be with the data extracted from the IceTV database.

These problems seem to be much less common than the old encoding issues.

Delighted to hear progress has been made. :D

Long a source of minor irritation!
