HELP - can't see computer's shares.
YES, I have read the sticky posts.
Though I am not stupid, reading the posts, things are mentioned which I can't "resolve" to how to get them.
The tabs mentioned aren't there.
(See later)
I go through the other bits, and it doesn't work.
Going into ADMIN' tools and all that..... I am not too keen to do that.
Most of what is shown/mentioned doesn't make sense to me.
I can see my shares on another PC easily. But not from the BW (DP-P2) Latest software I believe.
Though updates aren't exactly "thick and fast".
One of the posts talks about moving the files into the "Shared documents" folder.
Yeah, right. That's about 5 gig of stuff. Not going to happen.
So what is it I am missing?
I have my GUEST account on my machine and it is active.
Though I can't find how to see if the password is "null" and those other things mentioned.
If someone could oblige me a bit more help on what to do, I would appreciate it.

Saying what version of Windows you're using (XP? Vista? Win7? Win8?) and what version of the Beyonwiz firmware you're using.scaredy cat wrote:...

The advice about what to do depends on which version of Windows you're using.

Ian,
Not that I want to be difficult, but that is a somewhat open question.
Network settings?
Ok, what I can work out you want:
TCP/IP properties:
General:
Use the following IP address 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask; 255.255.255.0
Shares:
Share this folder on the network (name entered)
Allow users to change my files.
Somewhere I have the "simple file share" box ticked.
Beyonwiz:
Settings:LAN
DCHP disabled
IP address: 192.168.0.6
WizPNP:
Client: Enabled
Server Enabled
Name (entered)
Port 49152
Windows sharing:
default username (blank)
Default password (blank)
Default workgroup (entered)

And is there any other device on the network that's been assigned 192.168.0.6 (perhaps by DHCP)?netmask wrote:Any reason why DCHP disabled ?
Do you use DHCP to set network addresses on other devices on the network?
Are the devices on the network connected to a router? If so, the router IP address is often 192.168.0.1 (for the 192.168.0.0 network), and the PC should have some other IP address.
What are the subnet mask, gateway and DNS server set to on the Beyonwiz?
Can you describe your network hardware setup and how it physically connects together?
Have you tried Clear All PC, then Scan in the Network section of the FilePlayer on the Beyonwiz?
Does WizPnP work in your setup?

DHCP is "disabled" because a) I don't really know what it is.
b) If it is needed, why is it an option to disable it?
I don't know if there are any other device assigned that address.
All my devices are FIXED IP addresses.
I told them their address.
To keep things simple for now, there are only:
The modem/router to the inter-web, my computer, the DP-P2 and a gigabit switch.
The modem is not always "available - as I disconnect it (unplug the RJ 45 cable) when I am not wanting to be online.
The other devices are off for the sake of keeping things as simple as possible.
The DNS server IP address is 192.168.0.1 (That is no longer correct as my router is now I believe the "DNS".... and is 192.168.0.254)
Secondary is blank.
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
Although the modem has 4 Cat 5 ports, I use 2.
1 is used if I am too lazy to power up the PC etc etc etc. The laptop goes in there and I just surf.
2 goes into the switch and everything is connected to that.
PC, NAS, PD-P2 and another PVR. And a spare lead for the laptop.

DHCP is the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, which allows a device on the network (often the router) to automatically configure the basic Internet settings (IP address, Gateway address, DNS server address, Netmask) on other devices on the local network. Its intention is to make IP setup on local networks simpler.scaredy cat wrote:DHCP is "disabled" because a) I don't really know what it is.
b) If it is needed, why is it an option to disable it?
It's not essential, but if you don't use it, you have to assign all the IP settings manually, as you appear to have done. Some people, like you, like to configure their networks by hand (or don't realise that DHCP can do it for you), and so it's possible to disable DHCP on some devices, and also to tell DHCP to only use a limited range of addresses on the local network for automatic assignment, so that you can have a network setup where some devices have automatically assigned IP addresses, and some have fixed IP addresses.
This seems to be self-contradictory. If you assigned all the fixed IP addresses yourself, you should know whether one has been used on two different devices, or at least be able to check whether it has been.scaredy cat wrote:I don't know if there are any other device assigned that address.

Having the DNS set up incorrectly should not affect the Beyonwiz's ability to find network shares or WizPnP servers on your network. It could affect the Beyonwiz's ability to access Internet services like WizTV and IceTV.scaredy cat wrote:...

I'm not sure what you mean by your 1) point. The PC should have no role in whether the other devices can communicate with each other (e.g. if the Beyonwiz wants to access shares on the NAS, the PC needn't be on). Of course, the PC must be on for the Beyonwiz to see any shares on the PC.scaredy cat wrote:Although the modem has 4 Cat 5 ports, I use 2.

The modem/router has 4 output ports.....
Of the 4, one of them has a "fly lead" which I plug in my laptop so I simply connect it to my laptop and "voila" I am on the net.
2 - the cable goes from the modem/router to a switch (24 port - don't ask) into which I have the computer (Desktop with terrabytes of storage) and the shares.
The DP-P2 is also plugged into.
Point 1 allows me to quickly and simply surf on my laptop.
Point 2 means I have to boot the desktop, turn on the switch and surfing takes longer to set up.
Also I un-plug the cable from the modem to the switch if I am not waiting to be connected to the net.

The conclusion does not follow. Windows sharing and WizPnP use different protocols, so one working and one not working doesn't really give much indication that there is a problem in one direction or another.scaredy cat wrote:Oh, if I run one of those programs on the PC, I can see all the files on the DP-P2.
(WixFX)
So there are comms between them one way. Just not the other.
What this does show, though, is that the problem is probably not to do with your general local network setup, but rather that the problem is to do with the Windows Sharing setup either on the PC or on the Beyonwiz, or perhaps both.
Which is at least some sort of progress.

Unfortunately, you can't, or at least not directly. You need to store the image somewhere where it has a URL (some free storage servers allow for this), and then put the URL inside the img tags: [ img ]http://some.storage.provider/path/of/my/image[ /img ] (but without the spaces inside the square brackets.scaredy cat wrote:... On my Beyonwiz P1 what I have under Windows Sharing is my PC name
ie netmask-pc
then my log on password
Default workgroup netmask-pc
I think from memory I had to establish a logon password for my PC before the BW would work. Up till that time I flew unsafely with no logon or password on my PC (only my cat to contend with in the house at the time...) Since then and 6 accounts... well that's another story..

Ok, so there is no where for me to put the PC's "name".....
This is really confusing to me. Why is it so difficult?
(Ok, I don't think I want to really know the answer to that)
But the DP-P2 can log into/onto my NAS quite nicely. There is no account on that.
Anyway, onwards and upwards - I hope.

You'll see red, yellow green button
Hit the yellow, then the red. You have a netmask of 255.255.255.0, so the Scan will go to 49%. that is normal.

Possibly the system did when you set it and you didn't notice it. Zero is not a legal host part of an IP address. The host part of the address is the final (rightmost) number in the IP address quad if the netmask is 255.255.255.0*.scaredy cat wrote:...
Someone - dunno who - changed the PC's address from 192.168.0.0 to .1!
....
A zero host address essentially means "unspecified". In the host part of the address, the values 0 and 255 are reserved, and can't be used as the host address for an actual network device. So for your network, feel free to configure devices to use any addresses between 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. Don't use 192.168.0.0 or 192.168.0.255 or assign the same address to more than one device.
I would recommend your switching over to use DHCP to configure your network, but there are also some problems involved in doing that, though they're normally easy to work around.
I'm still not sure what exactly has happened, and I don't have XP available to see what happens if you try to set the host address part of a PC's IP address to 0. This is also partly because the description of what you've actually done is pretty skimpy.
* More precisely, the 1 bits in the netmask say that the corresponding bits in the IP address are part of the network address, and the 0 bits in the netmask say that the corresponding bits in the IP address are part of the host address.
