Freeview update...

Post by arthurbach4 » Mon Feb 09, 2009 15:29

So first there was this:

http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/0,239035250,339294725,00.htm

Now there's this:

In truth I don't use the EPG all that often, but I am curious about the "special features" that I will be missing out on.

Pete.

And still Ms Parks wonders why the Freeview information campaign has "... caused some confusion and concern."

In the absence of any information from the Freeview information campaign, perhaps we can start our own rumours on what the Freeview EPG special features might be?

 Accuracy
:o Mixed Case INSTEAD OF CAPS
:x Context-sensitive advertising
 Screen-hogging Freeview banner just like WizTV's
 Marking of ad breaks so your PVR can meet the Freeview technical requirements and doesn't have to skip them, it just doesn't record them in the first place :!:

Found some interesting reading about Freeview on a SMH blog that was passed on to me by a colleague.
Only devices which meet Freeview's "technical requirements" will be allowed to license the Freeview logo, which means they must offer a seven day EPG, they can't offer ad-skipping and they can't offer an easy way to copy recordings off the box. Devices which don't meet the Freeview requirements, such as some ad-skipping PVRs from Topfield and Beyonwiz, won't be able to display the Freeview logo.

Yep, those restrictions have been discussed on various forums, including this one, starting from when Freeview first started making press releases. The SMH article linked to from that post predicted the rapid demise of TiVo, which isn't quite what happened :) There have been several Freeview topics on the Beyonwiz forum since.

Seems to me that, that statement doesn't do anything but stop someone putting the go fast stripes on it.

"CompleteView"
with the sticker stating "this is a fully functional full speed Personal Video Recorder with built in TPA?" or words to that affect..

There was also more recent discussion of Freeview (in generally disparaging terms) here prompted by another SMH article.
