Channel 31 - No Guide or Now/Next info

Post by Gully » Fri Feb 08, 2019 17:34

Just checking the EPG and I am not getting anything for Channel 31 Melbourne and nothing in Now/Next.

Doubt it is connected but I just updated to v17.5.20190207

Anyone else with this problem?
Cheers

Sorry, can't help: wrong location. IanSav may be able to confirm when he updates to 20190207.

I guess to start with, anyone who hasn't updated including IanSav, are you getting EPG and Now/Next?

What about on your TV's tuner?

Hi Gully, I have no C31 EPG or Now/Next in Melbourne on FTA. Ok on IceTV of course.

U4 not updated yet.

The same.

Don't use the TV to watch TV so hadn't checked before.

Thanks. So confirms it is a C31 problem not a firmware one, which I thought was unlikely given it was only one service affected and they have a history of problems.

Hi,

Just got home. No EPG on C31 here either. Looking at C31 with my data analyser and C31 looks in a bad way. The ONID, TSID and SID values are now all "1" and not their normal values of 12832, 3584 and 3585 respectively. All other PIDs seem okay.

The EPG issues are a common problem. I believe the guy who maintains the EPG sets it up on a Monday and leaves it alone until the next Monday. If it breaks nothing is done unless he is given a prod. IanB often lets them know their EPG is down. It is too late to get it fixed now and the odds are that on Monday it will "fix" itself. The PID issues are something I have never seen before.

I don't have any engineering contacts at C31 with whom to raise the issue.

Regards,
Ian.

Hi,

I just tried to call C31 on their listed number to let them know about their broadcast issues An answering machine took the call. I don't know how to contact their master control or engineering departments.

Regards,
Ian.

I rang them a few days ago, they are having difficulties (???) and hope to have the epg and now/next fixed next week.

Judy (csutak40) seems to have had the same PID problem with C31 about a week ago.

I had problems with C31 last week no pic/sound and no air epg (I use icetv, so switched that off to test).

I have been away for the weekend, so only just upgraded to 0207. Saw this thread and checked C31 - it is now showing.

Not sure what it used to be, but it now showing signal as mid 80s, and quality at low to mid 50s. Channels 9 & 7 are showing high 90s for both S & Q for example.

I am in Hampton Park, and can see Mt Dandy from the roof where the antenna is located. I did the OTA upgrade, and didn't get prompted to do a rescan so I haven't.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike,

Without a rescan I assume that you are using the old C31 settings which should work, as you have observed. If you perform a rescan while the broadcast signal is faulty you may not be able to access C31.

Ian.

Hi Ian,

Just for the sake of it, I just did a rescan. A bit confusing...

I still have C31, but it is now on Channel 32 (557.500 MHz, as shown on OverlayHD). I am pretty sure before I did it, it was on Channel 8 (but not 100% sure on that). No epg though.

Looking at the C31 web site, they say:

"Can’t find us on your TV? We’re temporarily broadcasting on both Channel 44 and Channel 350"

So not sure where the Channel 32 comes from, or is that an internal Wiz channel number?

Mike.

Hi Mike,

Channel 32 refers to the UHF channel that carries the C31 signal. C31's Logical Channel Number (LCN) is 44. I saw the note about the signal being available on LCN350 but that is not a reasonable assertion. The LCN range 350 to 399 is reserved for overflow services and no broadcaster can be sure where any services may be allocated within that range.

Regards,
Ian.

I think that what happens is this:
  • C31 is broadcasting the correct SID:TSID:ONID - E01:E00:3220
  • Someone at C31 breaks their configuration and they start sending SID:TSID:ONID - 1:1:1 - C31 can't be viewed.
  • Rescan, C31 can now be viewed using SID:TSID:ONID - 1:1:1, but because of that change, it no longer shows its picon, existing timers fail, and IceTV can't set timers.
  • Someone sees that the config is broken and fixes it: C31 resumes broadcasting the correct SID:TSID:ONID - E01:E00:3220, but if you rescanned, you now can't view C31.
  • Rescan, C31 can now be viewed using the correct SID:TSID:ONID - E01:E00:3220. The picon shows correctly, old timers on C31 work and IceTV can set C31 timers again. But any timers set while C31 was sending incorrect SID:TSID:ONID values now fail.
I think that that may be a contributory cause of the problems that Judy (csutak40) has been having on C31, though I still think that she has signal quality issues, too.

SID:TSID:ONID (Stream ID, Transport Stream ID, Originating Network ID) are three of the fundamental parameters in a digital TV channel that describe how to extract the channel from the bundle of digital channels sharing a single broadcast frequency. If any of them don't match what the receiver (TV or PVR, for example) expects, you can't view the channel.

Still no change here with the EPG or Now/Next info.

IanB or IanSav, have you spoken to them again?
Cheers

Hi Gully,

The PID issues have already been corrected and by the time you read this, or shortly thereafter, the EPG data should also be restored.

Apparently the issue was outside of C31's control. I believe it was a transmitter / transmission issue.

Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian

Fortunately I never had to deal with the PID issues and now that I am home from work I checked the EPG and it is indeed fixed so thanks for that.

Hi Gully,

Don't thank me, thank the engineers who finally came to C31's aid and fixed the transmitter / transmission error. ;)
