I haven't noticed any ads lately but it wouldn't surprise me if they were much louder than the shows. Last week I noticed Psych was much quieter than usual.

That's when we press the Radio button on the Receiver/Amp remote and listen to ABC FM :)

Sure have, really disconcerting to say the least.

I notice when a Ten show isn't 5.1, it is extremely quiet. I have to up the amp volume by 6 to 10dB!! to get comfortable listening levels compared to when it is 5.1 (e.g the Bon Jovi concert was a good example, mind you, it wasn't 5.1 at the beginning due to a technical issue, and they obviously sorted it out and all of a sudden, booming 5.1! Something similar happened in the Australian Idol semi or final, the 5.1 started to crackle like buggery, they cut to an ad break, and when it came back, it was Dolby Surround instead, and considerably quieter).

I've noticed it too.

I think it's because the ads are all SD.

Last night while my wife was watching one of those American Crime/Legal shows, I also noticed the difference in colour spaces between the show and the ads. The show had much more of a red push, whereas the ads weren't so bad.

yeah, good point about the SD, they reduce the dynamic range substantially (i.e compress it to buggery) for the MPEG stereo audio so Mums & Dads don't complain about why their digital is so much quieter than the analogue I think.

The ads on 10 have been doing this on SD-only (as witnessed throught the toppy 5K) as well for quite a few weeks now. I called Ten to complain, they said they will only recognise complaints submitted in writing. I feel like ringing them every ten minutes and saying in a very loud voice "DID YOU KNOW YOUR ADS ARE MUCH LOUDER THAN YOUR SHOWS??" to give them a taste of what it's like, & see if they get the message then. I suppose if they want it in writing, I could always program the fax to auto send the same document every few minutes & lodge my complaint that way.
Cheers,
Brian

Send it to them in writing but use all CAPITOLS. And yes, send them lots of complaints.

While you are at it, complain about their policy of only recognising complaints that are in writing. I mean, how hard is to take down a complaint over the phone and then add it to the pile of written complaints?

We should all ring up at 10am every day to complain about both the volume and the written complaint policy.
cheers
