Raw XML character entities dispayed in IceTV data

Post by prl » Thu Feb 12, 2015 16:30

XML character entities are being displayed in program information in the EPG, and are being used in recording names.

I first noticed this in the title of "The House That £100K Built" (7TWO, Fridays 21:30), which shows in the IceTV guide as: "The House That £100K Built".

There are a number of instances of similar things that I've extracted from my IceTV EPG cache:
Master Shake decides to become a new superhero named ‘The Drizzle.’

Meanwhile, Rossi’s first wife, Carolyn

discover evidence that leads them down a path that pulls at Hooker’s heart.

the effects of augmented reality girl-on-girl porn – [yes, really  :D ]

teen sibling to ABC2's Good Game –

Jack shows up who appears to be Marv’s new best friend

the secret behind the famous Iberian ham ‘bellota'

Journeying from 18th-century France to 1950’s America

‘94 Winter Olympic Games

After Frank ‘The Fixer' Tagliano testifies

Inspired by a mother’s group

she winds up investigating Antonia’s husband’s apparent ability

Luke’s journey continues

Fugu And Tako

There he cooks his local guide’s favourite meal
It looks like they're mostly opening/closing single quotes (also being misused as apostrophe).

Old bug in IceTV server. They have known about it since the early beta testing days. I guess they will fix it in their own time.

Actually, #8217 is the preferred Unicode character for an apostrophe, according to the Unicode guide
2019 ’ RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK
= single comma quotation mark
• this is the preferred character to use for apostrophe

Meh. It's all a bit subjective. Do you live in an ISO-8859-1 country or in a UTF-8 world?

Either way, HTML or XML entity encoding is incorrect. What character is used is irrelevant. In theory, the EPG could come down in Braille as long as it is proper UTF-8.

Yes, I undetdtand that it's not encoded properly, but I was just informing Prl that using a right single quotation is the correct character for an apostrophe, they weren't misusing it.

I was sure when I looked it up it said there was a preferred apostrophe code point, but I can't find it now, so I guess it wasn't there in the first place

It depends on the context, but the preferred one for contractions and possessives in typeface is the right single quote.

Looks really odd on the infobar now the programme is actually live.

Glad the Bank of England have this sorted as it would look funny if it ended up printed on pound notes.
