Anyone successfully Installed OPENVIX on V2?

Post by diceman01 » Mon Jun 13, 2022 12:33

HI guys I was given my fathers V2 and I was trying to use OPENvIX on it. I assumed it was the same as a Octagon SF8008 but fails to Install. I also tried OPENATV beyonwiz builds and they fail to Install as well. I was wondering has anyone managed to Install 3rd party images successfully on these boxes?

There is no publicly-available OpenViX image for the V2 (or any other Beyonwiz model). There currently isn't even a developer version being built.

I haven't tried doing a USB installation of OpenATV on my V2 for a while, and I'm not even sure where I'd find one. Currently, the version of ATV that I multiboot on my test V2 won't do an online upgrade of itself. In the past, I've been able to work around this by installing the ATV upgrade from ViX, but that's not a simple procedure, either, and requires the V2 to be set up for multiboot, and that's a messy in itself.

The V2 and SF8008 are not actually identical, and the firmware detects the difference and refuses to start up on the "wrong" hardware. It is possible to install Octagon SF8008 firmware on the V2, but that requires patches that I don't feel free to distribute.

Thanks for the reply I won't bother wasting anymore time on it. The only thing it had going for it over other E2 boxes was built in twin DVB-T tuner. For the price you can get better E2 boxes and use usb tuners.

I installed the OpenATV (v7) image not too long ago.
You did download the full bootloader version of the firmware image?

I downloaded openatv-6.4-beyonwizv2-20220603_recovery_emmc and openatv-6.4-beyonwizv2-20220603_mmc and copied unzipped files to the root of a usb flash drive. It still fails to install.

You only need the "recovery" firmware file to be unzipped.
The other file is an update image that doesn't have the bootloader, and is designed to be installed as part of an online image update, or as part of a multi-boot setup.

When you switch on the V2, are you holding the front panel POWER button down?
Doing so, should result in the front panel showing "UPDT" within a few seconds, and the V2 will boot into the bootloader menu.

From there you can use the V2 remote to navigate to the firmware update option and flash the new image.

The version 7 image is the latest (non-beta) development image and uses the latest Python libraries. I would advise using this one going forward, as the old one will be getting very little love now.

So I copied all the files from the recovery zip (image version, kernal, rootfs) etc to the root of the usb drive. When I go into recovery mode holding the power button I see the recovery menu but it fails no matter what I do.

Can you describe what messages you are seeing, or in what way it is failing?
Can you confirm if the bootloader is seeing your USB drive?

Have you been successful in flashing an official Beyonwiz firmware from USB on the V2 with the same stick?

BTW, the "image version, kernal, rootfs" files re all from the non-recovery image.
The recovery image has "apploader, bootargs, fastboot, imageversion, usb_update" in it.

The v2 bootloader isn't as funny as the T and U series in regards to USB formats, so I would be surprised if it couldn't see it.
I don't know for surte if the process balks at seeing more than the required files in the root folder (I didn't think it particularly cared), but it's often just easier to make sure the USB stick is empty apart from the required files.

v7.0 images are here in case you didn't see them:

Ok so Ill describe the following best as follows:

I have just downloaded the OPENATV 7.1 recovery emmc
I unzipped and manually copied all the files to the root directory of the usb
I hold the power button on boot and the box sees the usb recovery menu (not the built in type)
I go to flash recovery image its says (No usb_update.bin file found on usb)
I go to Multiboot image upgrade it says (No USB device found)
The box will flash fine with the official firmware through the built in recovery if that's what you call it
I have tried multiple usb drives 2/4/8gb
I know the box is seeing the usb recovery as its not the same as the built in type

I hope that makes sense what I have written. I know E2 boxes can be picky with usb drives like my VU+ Duo2 but I know the V2 is seeing the usb

I wouldn't use the 7.1 images. Those are early tester images (I know, I know.....I don't know why they make it so confusing)

Not sure I am following you there. You should see the same USB recovery screen you would normally see.

Have you unplugged your recording drive from the V2?

I don't think I have ever seen my V2 boot the recovery straight off the USB like that before.

You might want to try starting up the V2 recovery mode with the USB stick unplugged, and then plug it in when you first see the recovery menu.

Ok sir you're a legend! So I tried what you said boot box into recovery then insert usb and now it successfully installed OPENATV 7.1! When I said the recovery built in compared to the usb recovery its a totally different gui when booting the box into recovery with usb plug in. Im not sure if you know what I mean.

Yep, understood your meaning. The newer ATV image should install an upgraded recovery menu onto the V2. I just didn't recall seeing the upgraded menu until after I had installed the new recovery image. I had no idea the V2 could even boot into an alternate recovery menu straight from the USB stick.

I have two V2s, and I run OpenATV on one and the Beyonwiz image on the other. It has been a while since I flashed back and forth between the two.

I would go back and repeat the process with OpenATV 7.0 though. That 7.1 is quite likely to be mostly broken (particularly the plugins).

OpenViX and OpenATV images will install a newer firmware installer screen on the box that looks completely different from the one in the Beyonwiz image (and older ViX and ATV images). It also has a lot more functionality and can handle more mulitboot slots than the old installer screen.

I just never knew that the V2 was capable of running the new style bootloader from the USB stick prior to it being installed on the internal flash.

Seems like in that instance, the V2 has trouble finding the update files when they're present on the same stick.

I don't recall ever having problems with either the old or the new update screen having problems finding the update files on the USB stick, but I haven't done an ATV update from USB for a very long time.
