Kodi Add-on repository

Post by freihaut » Tue Sep 01, 2020 17:28

New to Beyonwiz and enjoying exploring it's functionality. I have ABC iview and SBS on demand running on Kodi from Aussieaddons and a couple from Slyguy such as Stan and Foxtel Now. The Kodi Add-on repository has an extensive list, some of which naturally require a subscription like mlb.tv for baseball and you are promoted to enter your username / password. Some however such as Nederland 24, which includes FTA channels from The Netherlands simply comes up with "One or more items failed to play. Check the log for more information about this message." Any idea if this is a Kodi 17 issue as BW doesn't run Kodi 18 (like Netflix), a geo-blocking issue or should this query be better directed to the Kodi people?

If you want to run Kodi properly get yourself a Media Player that has the "grunt" to be able to be dedicated to streaming, not a PVR that has add-ons. Check out Whirlpool HT thread for discussions about Kodi and devices

The OpenATV variant of the V2 firmware is being updated and currently includes Kodi 19. That firmware also has a dedicated Netflix plugin that operates natively on the V2, not as a Kodi plugin.

It might be some time before that improvement makes it to the Australian "Beyonwiz V2" firmware though.

Thanks. I'll look forward to the firmware upgrade. Would be good to cull some devices and and do more with one. Looks like that could be the issue. Binge also not working with Kodi 17.

In the meantime I guess I may have to upgrade the ATV to a later generation that has access to the app store...in the interest of marital harmony. Mirroring from phone to STB to TV probably a bridge too far for the wife.

I'll have a look at Whirlpool re: media players.

How do I make the change to the ATV to upgrade Kodi to V19. or is there another way of updating Kodi to V19?

OpenATV is a completely different firmware that is developed in Europe primarily. It has a fairly different look and feel to the Beyonwiz version, but it is pretty clean and will be familiar enough to a Beyonwiz user to get by.

You can download the latest USB recovery image from here.

http://images.mynonpublic.com/openatv/n ... beyonwizv2

You won't be able to restore any of your settings and timers automatically when you switch to this firmware.

Will it allow reversal to the current firmware or Beta?

Will the OverlayHD still run? Is that the 182 version? Will I still be able to run local channels and Picons?

You can roll back to the Beyonwiz firmware at any time.

The Beyonwiz version of OverlayHD won't work on OpenATV, and I am not sure that even the mainline version of OverlayHD works on OpenATV either (It is more focussed on Vix).

You'll have to try it out to know what I mean, but OpenATV looks on the surface VASTLY different to the Beyonwiz GUI, so OverlayHD might not be something you want or need. OpenATV has a range of other skins that you can apply to try out though.

OpenATV has all the latest picons and can even run IceTV.

In an ideal world, it would be nice to have the Beyonwiz firmware set up as a multiboot image so you could boot into either OpenATV or Beyonwiz. There are really complicated ways that this can be done, and it is not something I have ever bothered to work out. I think even prl needed quite a bit of handholding on his first goes.

I'm not certain that OverlayHD runs on OpenATV. But I think that it's reasonable to say that it runs on more images than just Beyonwiz and OpenViX, but I don't think that either could be called the "focus" now.

I read some of the issues you had with installing the ATV on the V2. I don't want to come across any errors and get stuck or damage the setup and not able to restore the Beyonwiz version. My concern also is, which do you use? openatv-6.4-beyonwizv2-20210730_mmc or openatv-6.4-beyonwizv2-20210730_recovery_emmc? The first has the Beyonwiz folder I am familiar with. Can one be loaded from the fly o my SD card or do I have to boot with a USB?

No trouble with installing it on a regular V2. My issues were only with a pre-release V2.

There is virtually no risk in trying this. You can switch back to the Beyonwiz firmware at any point by re-flashing from USB, and restore your old settings.

As I said above, you want to use the recovery image to flash from USB.

recovery_emmc can be installed the normal way (i.e. by holding down power); the mmc one is where you have to jump through a few hoops. The "new" multiboot can install multiple images on the flash, but Beyonwiz doesn't have that (yet?). I do want to try converting the Beyonwiz usb into mmc, then you could install it into slot 2 (after installing OpenATV). I was going to do that next week, but could probably do it tomorrow if you want to try it out...

That would be awesome. Though I thought I recalled PeterU saying that it was a bit of a tricky thing to do because of the way the Beyonwiz image expects the partitions to look like or something?

But you can't go to Beyonwiz/ATV multiboot that way. It will always install on the internal flash and replace the old firmware.

I think that if you install from the recovery_emmc, you'll get the new multiboot boot loader. I've never tried installing multiboot from that, though.

There's a Web page around that describes how to do it manually, but it's a bit of a pain. One of the reasons I haven't tried using the multiboot loader to install multiboots is because I don't want to break what I have.

Where is the latest Beyonwiz Firmware download? There never seems to be a consistent place. I'm using Beta so I need the that latest image. I just got one this morning online dated 31/7/21 for 19.3 but I don't know the minor version details.
Do I have to restore the Official before the Beta?

The latest beta, which seems to be what you are looking for is always in Public Beta, and will usually be the first topic there.

And as long as you run the beta feed script you will get the online updates which as you say takes you to 31/7 release for now.

To post the version all you need is v19.3.20210731 in this case.

And no, no need to restore the official one first.

Kodi 19 must only be available on the 6.5 test firmware then I guess (that works be related to needing Python 3 probably). That firmware is by no means completely "finished" yet, so if only install that as a test if you were keen.

I'm Savvy but don't want to go further on the Beyonwiz until there is a stable version. I'm not enjoying the OpenATV version much. One thing that has put me off is not being able to use "skip" buttons. That's my Bread and Butter for watching Free to Air

I have a media player and Kodi just doesn't work properly and am keen to compact my system to avoid using too many devices, hence wanting to get Kodi running on the Beyonwiz. I just want to have a good Movie database that includes all the background data and images. Unfortunately Kodi is a little finiky on the Beyonwiz and not loading music or movies correctly. This is why i was looking for a better later version.

The Kodi site states a stable version of V19 but I just can't get it. I have tried the Android version on my media player but it just freezes.

Yea, that probably the one thing that puts me of using OpenATV as a daily driver.

The only versions of Kodi that are officially produced are ones that run on conventional desktop style systems (Windows, OSX, Linux desktops).

As I understand it, the other ports to specialised services are all unsupported projects done by third parties (android is probably a supported one though).

The Enigma2 is definitely a third party managed project, so it is not something you can just go and download and install on your V2 unless the firmware provider offers it as a plug-in, or you have the programming skills to rewrite the relevant parts yourself.

That would be awesome. Though I thought I recalled PeterU saying that it was a bit of a tricky thing to do because of the way the Beyonwiz image expects the partitions to look like or something?
It didn't work, so that could be it. Turns out it was still using the SD card. Removed the card, flashed again, but wouldn't boot. It was an old image (20200502), that's why I was going to wait till next week, see if I have the data to get a recent image. Still, I'm not sure it would matter. I didn't try with the SD card, I already had that working. I could update my flash online code if you'd still like to try that way (it worked last time I tried, but that was even older than the aforementioned image).

No big rush, it was just one of those things that would be cool to have. :)
I'd most likely be testing this to start with on my pre-release V2 as well (it already has the most recent bootloader and an operating OpenATV installation), which would have those extra "DRM complications" with the firmware too.

I expect that's this:

Unfortunately the updates are entangled with changes that affect the layout of the flash memory and the boot process.
Presumably that's what enables the subdirectory multiboot that the other images have.

Kodi has a menu called 'Recently added episodes' under the Estuary skin. When you select TV shows It gives you a picture from whatever happens in that episode, whether you want it or not. Does anyone know of a quick hack that can blank-out or disable this menu, the methods described online don't seem to work on the beyonwiz. :?:

To answer my own question above, I found the best way to avoid spoilers in Estuary is to switch skins. It is very easy under the 'Interface' control panel to download and run a more co-operative interface. Most of them I do-not like, however a skin named 'Mimic' is very similar to Estuary and does-not display snippets of future, unseen episodes. As a bonus, it also has the advantage of being able to download mismatched artwork which Estuary has a problem with. :D
