V2 to replace a DP-P1

Post by Tramperb » Fri Aug 06, 2021 21:47

With the failure of the HDMI-out of my DP-P1 (although it's functional with a component connection), I expect I'll be updating to a V2 in the near term. I've read a few of the threads, looked at the feature comparison (thanks prl, seriously useful stuff) and have, if I may, a couple of questions about how I think I would operate.

As I have a good NAS with capacity, a wired 100Mbps LAN, an A/V receiver and smart TV, I am thinking I can run the V2 with a 64Gb SD card for time-slip, and do record/playback to/from the NAS. Does that work? I don't think I need any local storage (ie don't need ext hdd or usb stick). Any tricks for new players?

As we occasionally run the TV stand-alone, I will need a coax splitter? as, I think, the V2 doesn't pass-through when in standby/off ?

So, is this how to connect all the bits? Coax to splitter then to the TV and V2.
Connect the V2 : cat6 to LAN, hdmi to A/V receiver
Connect A/V receiver : hdmi to TV (and both TV and receiver are already LAN-connected).

Our usage is not demanding. Time-slipping FTA broadcast, occasional FTA record & playback, record 1 channel while watching another (ie 2 tuners will be enough).

Thanks

The V2 has three power states: on, standby and shutdown. In standby the processor is running, A/V out is shut down, recording for timeshift is off, and the disk can spin down. Passthrough is enabled when on and in standby, but not in shutdown.

So the answer depends on whether you want to leave the T2 in standby or shutdown when it's not in use. In the first case, you don't need a splitter, in the second you do.

Thanks, Peter - I'll mostly leave it in standby (I imagine) so will skip the splitter.

Is using the NAS for the default record/playback a workable/sensible plan?

I can't really answer that, because I've never tried to do it, but there are people who do. If you want to use timeshift, it's probably a sensible idea to add a microSD card into the mix to do the timeshift recordings to.

Anyone recording directly to a NAS from a V2 care to comment ?

I set up one for a friend a while ago but had problems with network latency on the NAS. It was a very old NAS and we ended up preferring to use a USB drive.

I've had the V2 recording to my NAS without issues for about 3 months during early V2 firmware development. That V2 now has a 2.5" USB drive attached so that I can test typical usage scenarios. However, during development, I even used the NAS for timeshift. It worked fine.

I have GigE network with three switches between the V2 and NAS. My NAS is a custom built Gentoo Linux server with a SAS card and more than ten HDDs. I never allow any drives to spin down or enable any aggressive power saving functionality that would reduce response time. The NAS server is in "performance on demand" mode and does a lot more than just serve files. It's only a 3GHz Core2 with 4GB RAM, although the initial build of that server was running on a 300MHz Pentium II with 128MB RAM.

Thanks for those responses. Perhaps it's not that common an option.

I expect the DS-220+ that I would use would be fast enough - both read and write (sustained) are above 200MBps. It is currently running 6 x 4MP security cameras as well as some local file sharing and the CPU is just idling most of the time. UHD stream is around 25-30Mbps so the 100Mb LAN should be OK (and HD, at 5Mbps, is really the more likely data stream). Only one switch to traverse (a Cisco Gb switch so plenty of backplane bandwidth).

The numbers look good but reality is another thing - I guess I'll just try it and see.

Thanks again for your input - it's appreciated.

The technical specs of the NAS suggest that it should work. However, there are reports on the Acronis Forum https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis ... ials-error of difficulties making backups to the DS220+, so there may be a firmware issue with the DS220+.

I have never tried recording to my ancient NAS [Synology DS414 NAS 4 x 4TB WD Red HDD] as there is not sufficient free storage.

I used a QNap TS-451+ when I first set mine up because the external USB drive I was using had issues. It worked great. No problems whatsoever. I did buy an external enclosure and started using a 3TB HGST NAS drive I had just sitting around for recordings and time shift.

I store lots of backups and stuff on my NAS so didn't want to tie up its space with recordings. I record a lot and the external drive is always about 2/3 full.

Thanks IanL-S, that looks more like a permissions issue specific to Acronis (backing up a Win10 PC to the NAS) - I'll be writing directly to the NAS so, with appropriate permissions, throughput should be the only question mark. Noted, but I don't think that will be an issue here.

Good to know, gibber- thanks for the info. I think your TS451+ might have a bit more grunt than my DS220+. It's worthwhile, I think, giving it a go.

Finally bit the bullet and am now configuring a V2 - and having a few problems.

I'm trying to set-up with a 64Gb microSD as storage for timeslip, config backup, settings - and the DS220+ NAS as timer/movie storage.

I've changed various settings multiple times (and lots of reboots) and finally have something that seems to work (ie timeslip works & saves to the sd, setting a timer works & saves to the NAS)

However, on reboot (and from time to time while watching FTA TV) it generates an error :
The directory /media/hdd/timeshift/ does not support hard links. Make sure you select a valid partition type.

The timeshift location is /media/hdd/timeshift/
The NAS has a shared folder that is mounted as:
Mount using FSTAB (mount at boot), Use as HDD replacement is off.

I've read through the thread : Mountpoint "Use as HDD" - but am not much wiser :(
I am running 19.3 20211010 on the V2

Any suggestions?

Did you format the microSD on the V2? This would format it as ext4, otherwise it'll likely be NTFS. What does MENU>>Information>>Devices show for that card's format?

No! I didn't format - it's exFAT.

OK, now it's ext4, rebooted and no error!

Impressive, Grumpy_Geoff, and greatly appreciated!
