Do I "need" IceTV, or does the V2 EPG support series recording etc?

Post by Doonks » Mon Jan 15, 2024 10:41

I use IceTV because:
  • I have a few series recordings that work well for me
  • I like the Android App to do the same
  • I have an old DPP2 in the bedroom connected to the service (although never record to the HDD in it)
  • I have pre and post padding set up to ensure I get the the beginning and end of the show I record (particularly sport that can easily and often run over time)
  • I'm used to it.
QUESTIONS
1 - Will the V2 EPG do all those things by itself?
2 - Can I unsubscribe from IceTV and still do everything I want to do?
3 - What other benefits does IceTV offer that the v2 EPG does not?

TIA

ps/ - I did search for this question, but my search terms/query were obviously lacking as I got no meaningful results. Apologies if this has been asked a number of times previously.

The V2 has Autotimers that can search the EPG for keywords and set recordings for programs when it finds matches.
It isn't as smart as IceTV in finding series, and doesn't handle repeats as well as IceTV.

You will maintain all the same pre and post padding etc.

You will not have the ability to set recordings from a public web page like with IceTV. You'd have to have access to your V2 (either locally, or VPN).

Good advice in the previous post.

Autotimers are very useful, however you may find the SmartEPG vu+ addon to be more suitable. I only use it because I used on my Toppys.

PS I use IceTV on the majority of my Beyonwiz units.

It's possible to use AutoTimers while you're still using IceTV. You can try setting up some AutoTimers for new series instead of using IceTV, and see how you go with them.

I personally don't like AutoTimers much, and I'm happy to keep paying my $8/month for IceTV's service, because I think it works better for me. YMMV.

SmartEPG Vu+ also works with IceTV - I tested it for several months a few years back.

I agree that IceTV is well worth $8 a month (1.75 coffees)

+1 - saves having to set up EPGRefresh or an equivalent to populate the EPG automatically too.
