Constant flashing "no function" icon on FTA TV

Post by Doonks » Sun Mar 05, 2023 17:37

When watching FTA TV, the "no function" or "error icon flashes randomly on the screen. It's only just started doing this for no apparent reason. It's as if something is leaning on the remote and it's constantly transmitting an invalid button press. I've even taken the batteries out, and rebooted the V2 twice. Still happens. Please see attached pic

Any ideas what is causing this, and what I can do to stop it?

Could be another stray source of RF in the room. You can try covering the V2's receiver to see if it still happens.

If it still happens with the receiver covered, then it is probably a fault with the V2's IR receiver or front panel.

My second V2 "picks up" a stream of "ARROW DOWN" commands, and it definitely has a dicky front panel connection (I can see segments from my front display are missing).
I have been meaning to open it up again and have another poke when I have some spare time.

Doonks says that it happens even if there are no batteries in the remote.

Removing batteries doesn't rule out a rogue source of IR which was the first step of identification.

Other potential IR sources such as fluorescent lights and LED lights should also be turned off as part of the process of elimination. Move the V2 to another room or shield the front panel with cardboard to see if the cause is external. If it continues despite those steps, it's likely an internal fault.

You're quite right. For some reason I read "remote" when you wrote "receiver".

Thanks will try this.

The V2 is in the same location it always has been, and we have no new equipment in the living room.

UPDATE

I am now watching a recorded program. I see the icon flashing during playback. I am wondering if the flashing icon is in the recording, or happening on screen. I jump back to rewatch the section where I saw the flashing and it was not there. That's means it's happening again live on screen.

I cover the front panel and continue watching. It flashes again.

Does this mean it is probably an internal or firmware problem?

The icon is part of the Wiz's user interface, and as such can not be recorded. The Wiz just records what it is sent over the air and not necessarily what is shown on the screen.

It means that it is probably a hardware problem and the IR sensing portion of the front panel is sending weird signals to the rest of the system.

Thanks. This is getting worse and makes watching TV near impossible

Is there a recommended repairer in Melbourne, preferably SE burbs?

No expert repairer in Melbourne that I am aware of. The only expert repairer that I am aware of is NASA Electronics in Sydney. I have always been happy with the service that they have given me. I sent my U4 to them yesterday (cost less than $20 with Australia Post including tracking). Nasa normally chages $159.95 for repair including parts, labour and shipping back to you. They can be contaced via www site: https://www.nasaelectronics.com.au/

I have not seen the issue you are having with V2, which like the U4 has been very reliable (unlike my T2 experience). The problem with the U4 was human interference - something like someone tripping over the cable from the tranformer to the unit, which (I suspect) "uninged" the connection to the motherboard.
