V2 Resolution Problem.

Post by billyblue » Tue Jan 10, 2023 16:33

My V2 (20211010) has been happily talking to my Samsung AU8000 for the 18 months or so I've had them at 2160p. Last Sat morning there was a power outage overnight - both were off/standby - and when the power came back the picture would appear for a few seconds then go blank for a few more before re-appearing and then blanking again etc.

Changing the output down to 1080p fixed this.

My U4/Sony setup was unaffected.

I've just re-flashed the firmware in the V2, with a restore of (old) settings, but the problem at 2160p remains. Won't have time to do a re-flash without restore before the weekend, and running at 1080 isn't really a problem, but I'm hoping that this isn't the start of the demise of the V2.

Any ideas out there?

Try a different HDMI cable.
You should ensure that it is rated at HDMI 2.0 or certified as "Premium High Speed" to ensure that you won't have any trouble at up to 2160p 60Hz HDR.

A regular "High Speed" HDMI 1.4 cable will work for 2160p 50/60Hz non-HDR content, which is more than enough for FTA TV and recordings. Finding a cable that is actually certified as High Speed rather than simply labelled as High Speed might be challenging, as it is pretty much the entry level capability and lots of cheap cables will make bold claims claims and sell cheap, which dis-intensifies quality cables from trying to compete on price ;).

1080p is also fine for FTA of course, but if you play downloaded media, and want the additional resolution, then I would opt for the better quality cable.

When problems like this arise I reflash but do NOT restore settings in case it's a setting that is corrupted. If this doesn't work it's a hardware issue.

You can restore settings later if the reflash clears the problem. If it returns after restoration it confirms a corrupt setting. Generally though, I simply manually set it up from scratch.

Found the time to reflash, clean setup but not restore.

Same problem.

Decided to restore the settings to minimize disruption pending cable swap (in wall = pain) over the weekend.

Problem gone.

Out of interest I checked the setting, expecting to see 1080x, but no, 2160p.

I'll take it, but I remembered a saying from my early days in IT... It was a FRED problem... Foolish* Ridiculous Electronic Device.
