Cloning a V2 to a new V2 as a "warm" backup?
Is it possible to copy the setup from one V2 to another?
I've bought a spare V2 just in case my first should fail (WAF is important to me - and her!) - I'd like to have the second backup unit ready to swap out if needs be
I use a network drive for all my recordings and storage (and a small USB for the buffer) - so in theory it would seem viable to have the second unit ready to go
I don't want to run them both at the same time - only one would ever be online - so I'm thinking services like IceTV would deal with that as it would only ever see one V2 that would need updating
Is this possible and if so how?
Thanks

Simply make the backup on one and restore it on the other, there shouldn't be any problems (I've done it myself), although I'm not sure about IceTV.

Backup and restore of the settings should work OK. IceTV will seamlessly cope with transfering series recordings to the new device. One thing gotcha, is that I suspect that the settings for IceTV (user name and password) are not saved in the backup (even if they were there may be a certificate expiry issue).

Thanks to both of you for the speedy and positive responses
I could certainly live with the need to log into IceTV again - that’s easy compared to reconfiguring drives and other customisation
I’ll do the backup regularly going forward

Simply cloning the settings won't work. You can start out by doing that for other custom settings but IceTV sends a machine-specific token that's stored in /root/etc/enigma2/settings.IanL-S wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 10:36Backup and restore of the settings should work OK. On booting up the spare you will need to login to IceTV using the wizard to set up the token for the spare.
In IceTV you will need to then clone the recordings from the active machine to the spare.
After that, it should work.

Thanks - that’s what I like about the Beyonwiz community - so much knowledge and support
Much appreciated
I’m certainly glad to have got the backup V2 - sadly technology seems to moving away from these PVRs and things like my Logitech Harmony remote control (I don’t relish going back to 3 or 4 remotes to control everything)

Re: Cloning a V2 to a new V2 as a "warm" backup?
Paul is correct about the need to clone the device at the IceTV end (very easy); not something I have had to do recently. Not sure if the same goes for Topfield PVRs which use a much older API.Paul_oz53 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 12:18

Thanks
The good news is that can be done at the time of commissioning the replacement machine as all that data is held on IceTVs systems and creating/cloning another device there is easy to do

Re: Cloning a V2 to a new V2 as a "warm" backup?
Ok a couple of follow up questions - I know these are somewhat dumb question but where is the Backup stored by default?
I’ve gone in and generated a backup in Settings menu and can see it doing it - also do I just accept the Default settings or are there others I should be opting into as well? But where is it filed once created?
My preference is for it to go to the USB drive I have attached to the V2 to host the buffer but how do I select that?
Given I don’t have any HDD attached to the V2 (using network storage) I’m thinking it is by default going to the USB but how can I confirm that?

Re: Cloning a V2 to a new V2 as a "warm" backup?
The default location is /media/hdd/ (which, on the V2, probably is your USB), where it adds backup/beyonwiz/v1; the current backup is enigma2settingsbackup.tar.gz, older backups get prefixed with the timestamp they were created. You don't generally need to add anything else to the backup.

Brilliant - thanks for the confirmation and what I need to look for
Update - I checked and it is storing the backups on the USB and I can see multiple historic backups on there
