V2 Backup. No space

Post by sabrej » Fri Dec 24, 2021 10:29

I'm trying to do a backup before I update the firmware.
But I get an error message about not enough space.
How do I get the space to do the backup ?

What devices are attached?
What device is mounted as /media/hdd as that's where the backup should be written.

Did you start or reboot the V2 with the USB connected? If so, it may have been connected as /mnt/hdd (i.e. as the main drive) filled up with timeshift files (or even with recordings).

If so, you need to shut the V2 down, connect the USB drive to your PC and check the USB stick for free space, and if that's low, look in the timeshift and movies folders on the top level of the USB drive and remove those directories if they contain any files. If they are recordings, they're likely to be truncated anyway.

I have a 256 GB SD card as the main storage.

It's used for timeshift, as I record to my NAS.

I'll check the card to see how full it is.

I removed the card and tried the backup, and it showed the same error.
But I didn't do a full shut down of the V2 before I tried this.

It's a bit hard to write to something that's either full or not present.

What's the backup location set in Advanced options; from either of PLUGIN>>Software management or MENU>>Setup>>Software manager?
If you select - without pressing OK on - "Select backup location" you'll see the current location is shown in the "hint" text as "Current device: {x}".

Don't ever remove the SD card unless the V2 is already shut down. Especially if it is the main storage and timeshift drive.
The V2 should be able to cope ok with that scenario without exploding, but it could also start behaving very oddly.

The backup location is /media/hdd.

I removed the card when the V2 is in Standby mode.

I usually just shutdown the V2 to Standby mode.
I decided to try a full shutdown by turning it off at the switch at the back.
I then tried a backup, and was successful.

So I assume that a full shutdown clears the Timeshift files.

The V2 is still running in Standby mode. It just switches off the tuners and the video output. Pulling the SD card is not advised in standby.

It will, but just changing service (channel) will also clear the timeshift files too.
I think that going to standby and then resuming will also clear them. Basically anything that triggers a new service being shown on the TV screen should clear them.
