I can't play stored files on my PC off a V2 using OpenWebif

Post by dangermouse » Mon Nov 30, 2020 14:44

I have a recently purchased V2 Beyonwiz (latest firmware) containing recorded TV programs. When I used my Win7 PC to try and play a stored TV program I experienced the following problem.
Enter OpenWebif in Firefox browser
Click on "Television" and select a station then select the stream icon (little screen) and "ABC.m3u8" file downloads. Click on open with VLC and it streams the ABC TV service with no trouble.
However if you click on "Movie" to stream a program recorded on the V2 it doesn't work as follows
Select a recorded video
ts.m3u playlist file downloads
Double click on the playlist file and VLC starts up and hangs.
I had a look at the .m3u file on the PC using the text editor and noticed the URL is directed at TCP port 8081 on the Beyonwiz web server as per the example below.

#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
#EXTINF:3005,ABC News Sunday
#EXTVLCOPT:program=565
http://beyonwizv2:8001/file?file=/media ... 0Sunday.ts

I then changed :8081 to :80 in the playlist file and the recording played perfectly
Given that port 80 is the html default I then deleted :8001 altogether and it still worked. I also got the same result with Potplayer instead of VLC.
Either OpenWebif is generating the port 8081 instead of 80 in the .m3u file or Beyonwiz is listening on 80 instead of 8081
Any comments from the experts?

Most likely a bug in OWIF.

Yea, movie playback via openwebif had been pretty much broken since 19.3 came in.

Much better to just play via the SMB share if you can.

Possibly it's an issue with boxes that support transcoding, thus T4, U4, V2.
Other users and I ran into this issue about a year ago.

Try disabling setting "Enable HTTPS" in the OpenWebif plugin configuration (open the Plugins browser, select OpenWebif, press OK).

Changing HTTPS setting doesn't make any difference. Playing the Windows share works but it stops every now and then as if it is buffering. I agree it is a bug and for the usability of the product needs to be fixed. Do you know who supports WINIF and how I can log a problem.
Thanks

Changing HTTPS setting doesn't make any difference.

You may need to restart the GUI for OpenWebif to process the change.

If that doesn't work, open this in a browser - http://beyonwizv2/api/settings
Then do a "find" (CTRL-F) on port, and also do the same for transcodingsetup and https.
List those entries here.

Can someone with a V2 and command line access please run -
ls -l /dev/bcm_enc0 /dev/encoder0 /proc/stb/encoder/0/apply
and
egrep 'port|https|transcoding' /etc/enigma2/settings

Thanks.

I have the same results as prl.

I tried accessing a recording from my V2, but I do that through a port via the T2, which is what the .m3u file contained.

Perhaps try a test from the command line (port 82 is the V2):

Code: Select all

T:\>curl http://beyonwizt2/web/ts.m3u?file=/
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://beyonwizt2:80/file?file=/

T:\>curl http://beyonwizt2:82/web/ts.m3u?file=/
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://beyonwizt2:82/file?file=/

T:\>curl "http://beyonwizt2/web/ts.m3u?file=/&port=8002"
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://beyonwizt2:80/file?file=/
The "port" parameter is only used for phone transcoding, so if you see 8002 that's where it's going awry; if you still see 8001 then I don't know where it's coming from (proxy?).

Is there something wrong with this try -
https://github.com/E2OpenPlugins/e2open ... am.py#L192

Port 80 file streaming works fine for me, but transcoded file streaming does not (but will work if I fudge the .m3u8 file to use port 8001).
I'm thinking that given I have the config variable set (config.plugins.transcodingsetup.port) something has to be wrong with that piece of code -

Code: Select all

root@beyonwizu4:~# ls -al /dev/bcm_enc0 /dev/encoder0 /proc/stb/encoder/0/apply
ls: /dev/bcm_enc0: No such file or directory
crw-rw----    1 root     root       10,  53 Jan 10  1970 /dev/encoder0
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root             0 Dec  2 13:42 /proc/stb/encoder/0/apply
root@beyonwizu4:~# egrep 'stream|port|https|transcoding' /etc/enigma2/settings
config.OpenWebif.https_auth=False
config.OpenWebif.https_port=8001
config.plugins.transcodingsetup.bitrate=1000000
config.plugins.transcodingsetup.port=8001
config.plugins.transcodingsetup.resolution=768x576
config.timeshift.stream_warning=False

Once I follow my own advice and used "phone" for transcoding:

Code: Select all

T:\>curl "http://beyonwizt2:82/web/ts.m3u?file=/&port=8001&device=phone"
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://beyonwizt2:8001/file?file=/?bitrate=1500000?width=720?height=576?vcodec=h265?aspectratio=2?interlaced=0

T:\>curl "http://beyonwizt2:82/web/ts.m3u?file=/&device=phone"
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://beyonwizt2:82/file?file=/?bitrate=1500000?width=720?height=576?vcodec=h265?aspectratio=2?interlaced=0

T:\>curl "http://beyonwizt2/web/ts.m3u?file=/&device=phone"
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://beyonwizt2:80/file?file=/
I have 8001 because I added "port"; with the "port" config setting (and the "phone" device) you should also have it. Still looks broken, using ? instead of &.

I have just discovered in webif that when I press the icon marked Stream (Transcoded): as distinct from just plain old Stream: the movie actually works without having to edit the file to port 80 - at least when you use pot player. VLC does not work

Interesting that the transcoded file streaming works.
What is the file streaming "http:" entry in the .m3u8 file?

Help from the experts, please!
This is my debugging code in stream.py, not that I'm pretending to know what I'm doing.

Code: Select all

                if fileExists("/dev/bcm_enc0") or fileExists("/dev/encoder0") or fileExists("/proc/stb/encoder/0/apply"):
                        print("[-Grumpy-] first transcoding check entry")
                        try:
                                transcoder_port = int(config.plugins.transcodingsetup.port.value)
                                print("[-Grumpy-] 1st: tried okay, grabbed %s" % transcoder_port)
                        except Exception:
                                # Transcoding Plugin is not installed or your STB does not support transcoding
                                transcoder_port = None
                                print("[-Grumpy-] 1st: tried exception")
                        print("[-Grumpy-] 1st mid: portNumber=%s, transcoder_port=%s" % (portNumber, transcoder_port))
                        transcoder_port = 8001
                        print("[-Grumpy-] 1st hardcode: portNumber=%s, transcoder_port=%s" % (portNumber, transcoder_port))
                        if device == "phone":
                                portNumber = transcoder_port
                                print("[-Grumpy-] 1st: device is phone")
                        _port = getUrlArg(request, "port")
                        if _port != None:
                                portNumber = _port
                        print("[-Grumpy-] 1st exit: portNumber=%s, transcoder_port=%s" % (portNumber, transcoder_port))
This is what is listed in the debug log when attempting to stream a transcoded recording (it succeeds because I hard coded the transcoding port assignment [transcoder_port = 8001]).
The "second transcoding check" debugging is further on in the code (if you took a look at the code link I previously posted you'd easilt guess where, also I dump the response).

Code: Select all

So why does the settings lookup of config.plugins.transcodingsetup.port fail?
I have it specified -

Code: Select all

root@beyonwizt4:~# egrep 'stream|port|https|transcoding' /etc/enigma2/settings
config.hdmicec.report_active_menu=False
config.plugins.transcodingsetup.bitrate=1000000

According to the source it's not defined. I didn't check the history to see if it used to be present, but OWIF has tested it since 2014.

Edit: there's an issue from 2015 that suggests the port might be hardcoded in the driver, so the option was removed (I still didn't check history to see if that was the case).

It's hard to say without more serious digging around in the code.

Using except Exception: rather than just except: is a bit weird, but doesn't make any difference. I'd have thought it better to catch only AttributeError, if the comment in the except clause is to be believed, but there doesn't seem to be anything inherently bad there.

It may help to print the exception that's being raised to find out what kind of exception was raised, and perhaps why, something like this:

Code: Select all

                        except Exception as e:
                                # Transcoding Plugin is not installed or your STB does not support transcoding

There are two plugins: TransCodingSetup is for "your VU+" and contains the port config setting (defaulting to 8002); MultiTransCodingSetup (that the V2 uses) is for "your INI HDp" and does not contain port (apparently fixed at 8001). This looks like a bug in OWIF, failing to recognise the Multi version and its fixed port.

That probably explains why Grumpy_Geoff gets an exception on config.plugins.transcodingsetup.port even when it's defined in /etc/enigma2/settings. Defining it in the settings file doesn't create the object in Python - Python has to create the matching object.

Thanks.
As you point out, the MultiTransCodingSetup plugin doesn't support setting transcodingsetup.port.
That config setting appears to come from the TransCodingSetup plugin, which I guess is why OWIF still tests for it.

Streaming results appears to differ possibly due to MIPS and ARM archictecture.

T4:
stream service (non-transcoded) - works, uses port 8001 (because config.OpenWebif.streamport default is 8001)
stream service transcoded - works, uses port 8001
recording streaming (non-transcoded) - works, uses port 80
recording streaming transcoded - fails, because the port is 80 (works if hardcoded to 8001)

U4:
stream service (non-transcoded) - works, uses port 8001 (because config.OpenWebif.streamport default is 8001)
stream service transcoded - fails, uses port 8001 (the stream actually plays on the U4, you can't control it!)
recording streaming (non-transcoded) - works, uses port 80
recording streaming transcoded - fails, because the port is 80 (if hardcoded to 8001 then the stream actually plays on the U4, you can't control it!)

Answer to Grumpy Geoff
When I click on the streaming transcoded icon I get a file called ts.m3u which plays OK and contains
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
#EXTINF:2277,ABC News
#EXTVLCOPT:program=565
http://beyonwizv2:8001/file?file=/media ... terlaced=0

So transcoded file streaming works on the V2. h.265 codec as well!
How it gets to use port 8001 is a mystery to me.

But vanilla file streaming fails :(
One would want it to at least be the other way around.

to summarize
Transcoded streaming produces a file called ts.m3u containing the following which plays
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
#EXTINF:2374,ABC News
#EXTVLCOPT:program=565
http://beyonwizv2:8001/file?file=/media ... terlaced=0

and plain streaming produces ts.m3u containing the following and does not work unless 8001 changed to 80
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
#EXTINF:2374,ABC News
#EXTVLCOPT:program=565

Re: I can't play stored files on my PC off a V2 using OpenWebif

There seem to be two issues. On mine (FW 20201121, OWIF 1.4.0), streaming is using 80, but so is transcoding, which should be using 8001. This seems to be an issue with OWIF incorrectly determining transcoding support.

Code: Select all

root@beyonwizv2:~# wget -q -O - http://localhost/web/ts.m3u?file=test.ts
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://localhost:80/file?file=test.ts

root@beyonwizv2:~# wget -q -O - http://localhost/web/ts.m3u?file=test.ts\&device=phone
#EXTM3U
#EXTVLCOPT--http-reconnect=true
http://localhost:80/file?file=test.ts?bitrate=1500000?width=720?height=576?vcodec=h265?aspectratio=2?interlaced=0
However, you have 8001, and I don't know why.

The other problem is that 8001 does not work for normal streaming, only transcoding. Both work fine for me.

Code: Select all

root@beyonwizv2:~# wget -O /dev/null http://localhost:8001/file?file=test.ts
--2020-12-07 16:27:37--  http://localhost:8001/file?file=test.ts

root@beyonwizv2:~# wget -O /dev/null http://localhost:8001/file?file=test.ts?bitrate=1500000
--2020-12-07 16:27:44--  http://localhost:8001/file?file=test.ts?bitrate=1500000

Can you tell us your exact version? Select "Box Info" within OWIF, there you'll find "Firmware version" and "Kernel / Drivers"; OWIF itself has an "About" on the bottom right.

So transcoded file streaming works on the V2. h.265 codec as well!
How it gets to use port 8001 is a mystery to me.

Prior to 26-Jan-2020 (i.e. so for 20191106 general release f/w), the port selected for file streaming is 8001 (because config.OpenWebif.streamport defaults to 8001; also I don't see it being able to be modified anywhere).
https://github.com/E2OpenPlugins/e2open ... 26246c88a0

This 8001 port use won't work if the transcoding parameters aren't also passed, hence if the transcoded ("phone") stream option is used then it should stream - and does on the T4 and V2, but it doesn't work on the U4.

That would explain it. It's also another demonstration of why "latest firmware" is meaningless.

This 8001 port use won't work if the transcoding parameters aren't also passed ...
I showed that does work on the V2, but possibly only with the "latest drivers", 20201119.

Okay that'd be it then, because in the opening post it doesn't, and I'm suggesting dangermouse is on 20191106.

Have you actually tried the transcoded file streaming to your PC? Because that's the bit that fails on the U4.
I see from your posts that you were executing on the V2 itself.

I redirected T2:8002 to V2:8001 and that seemed to work fine. I can't test the V2 directly, atm (only got the one wifi dongle, don't really want to swap). Have you tried wget directly on the U4?

I haven't but I don't see that making a difference, given an OWIF requested transcoded file stream doesn't get delivered to OWIF/PC - it takes over the U4 and plays on it -
Grumpy_Geoff wrote:

U4:
stream service (non-transcoded) - works, uses port 8001 (because config.OpenWebif.streamport default is 8001)
stream service transcoded - fails, uses port 8001 (the stream actually plays on the U4, you can't control it!)
recording streaming (non-transcoded) - works, uses port 80
recording streaming transcoded - fails, because the port is 80 (if hardcoded to 8001 then the stream actually plays on the U4, you can't control it!)

On the T4, fudging the port to 8001 allows an OWIF requested transcoded file stream to work; it streams back to the PC where, in my case, PotPlayer does the job.
But since non-transcoded file streaming works (in the beta) I don't see the need to transcode with my wired network.

It wasn't happy with port 8001, transcoding parameters or not (I don't think it knew it got to the end when not specifying the bitrate) -

I guess it wants more arguments, unlike the V2.

If you'd been viewing live TV, the infobar will show details for the live TV event, as it knows nowt about the "streamed" recording, but the recording is actually being shown.
You have to restart the UI to gain access to the UI.

Re: I can't play stored files on my PC off a V2 using OpenWebif

That looks like it either fails to allocate an encoder (either because there aren't any or they're all in use), or it fails to open /dev/encoderN. Given that it is playing, it must be the latter. If it exists, maybe the U4 doesn't like it being opened read-only? I'm afraid that might be as far as I can go.

Things get ugly with OWIF because the oe-alliance build system replaces the standard OWIF transcoding.py file with https://github.com/oe-alliance/oe-allia ... scoding.py

Unfortunately there is not enough information available to establish the reason for a forked copy of this one file.

Maybe someone could test with the unmodified OWIF version to see if that actually works better than the hacked oe-a version. It can be found at https://github.com/E2OpenPlugins/e2open ... scoding.py

If the OWIF version works, I'll modify my build environment to drop the oe-a hack and will build another new beta for more thorough testing.

That's for the /transcoding path, which returns transcoding options (XML) and optionally sets port. Both versions fail because they test for the non-existent config.plugins.transcodingsetup.port.

Yes, we know.
If you want to be able to stream recordings non-transcoded (port 80) viw OWIF, then either -
a) wait for the next general release of the firmware, or
b) load the current beta firmware now, or
c) adjust the entry in the downloaded .m3u8 file each time.

Or just use Windows File Explorer and open the {recording}.ts file.

And of course, run the script to use the beta update feed after you load the beta.

Here's a test binary (that's untested) for the U4 to potentially identify and workaround the transcode problem (it won't fix it, but hopefully it'll relinquish control). Look for [eEncoder] in the log; if it's not there, then it's not what I thought it was.

I installed this then tried some transcoded services on the U4. I could not find eEncoder in the log.

However, I did get transcoded services playing for ABC Comedy, SBS Viceland HD and World movies HD, 9GEM HD and 9 Rush. Failed on all other FTA services.

Previously, I think they all failed except HDMI IN.

Extract from the log attached.

I've updated the previous attachment with a couple more messages, but still not sure how much they'll help.

I didn't change anything other than adding that eEncoder message. The only other potential difference was building with the V2 SDK. The stream itself seems to be at fault with those failures, failing to start the demux.
