Getting a V2 and a Bose Lifestyle 535 Series III to talk via Bose universal remote

Post by 000 » Wed Nov 04, 2020 17:06

Hello Folks,

I've just replaced my T4 with a V2. I'm using a Bose Lifestyle System 535 Series III, and the Bose remote, to control my devices.

I previously used the 'Venton DVR' hack (on the Bose audio system setup, tell the Bose that the DVR is a Venton, not a Beyonwiz), and that made the T4 work nicely with the Bose remote.

I was able to get a U4 to work with a Bose Lifestyle 650, as I could tell the U4 to use a different code set (turns out to be the Venton codes I believe). But the V2 doesn't seem to have this feature

Any ideas or other code-sets to try to tell the Bose Lifestyle 535 Series III, to allow the Bose universal remote, to control the V2?

(Is the underlying hardware known as another brand overseas?)

I have read somewhere on this forum it is based on the Octagon SF8008.

Thanks for the tip. I couldn't find any specific remote codes relating to Octagon (in my brief alphabetical search).

I have tried ringing Bose support, but the rep I spoke to didn't think there was much chance of getting the Beyonwiz V2 codes updated in the next Bose firmware update.

As an experiment, when I get a chance, I'm going to try connecting the Beyonwiz V2 to a Bose Lifestyle 650, and see if it plays nicely (see if the Bose remote allows the V2 to change channels, access menu options etc.).

Does Bose support the U4 remote? Its native code set is the same as the V2 code set.

That's correct, and OpenViX firmware for the SF8008 can be made to run on the V2. The SF8008 and V2 remotes have different layouts, but the V2 remote will work on a V2 running the SF8008 ViX firmware.

In the past I have setup a Bose Lifestyle 650 with a U4, but it needed the alternate remote codes option set (sorry, can't remember the terminology of this Beyonwiz U4 feature), for the U4 to work with the Bose Lifestyle 650. So I'll try the V2 with a Bose Lifestyle 650, but I suspect the codes won't work, since the V2 appears to lack the feature of emulating the different Beyonwiz remotes like the U4 does

That's correct, it doesn't just seem to be the case, it is the case. The V2 can only accept 1 code set, the one in its remote which is the same as the U4 remote's default code set.

It might be easier for people to help if you described exactly you managed to set up the Bose remote for the U4.

Also, have you looked at whether the Bose setup includes the Octagon SF8008?

If I recall, the 'Venton" devices used the T3's 0xabcd code set, and the Venton DVR was one of the pvrs known by the Bose remote.

Trying to get large companies like Bose to produce custom updates to support obscure brands like Beyonwiz is just a recipe for frustration.

A proper end-user configurable Universal remote is just so much less hassle.

Good questions. The Bose 650 required the U4 configured to use the 'T3' remote control code set. Then it was happy with the Venton codes.

The Octagon isn't in the Bose 535 (from what I could find)... But it IS in the Bose 650 (which is newer / still a current product).

So instead of the config I wanted, of: Bose 650 -> U4, and Bose 535 Series III -> V2, I have tried:
Bose 650 -> V2, and Bose 535 Series III -> U4.

I set the Bose 650 to the Octagon SF8008 (or "SF808" as Bose calls it) for the V2. And I set the Bose 535 Series III to the Venton codes for the U4 (set to receive the T3 codes, in the U4's setup).

Everything is happy, working, and controlling using the Bose remotes, without any other changes (other than the recordings being in a totally different room). But that's not a biggie.

So that's a great outcome. Thanks folks for all your help and suggestions!
