Recorded shows have much louder volume than live tv

Post by Hostile17 » Sat Jul 11, 2020 20:06

Hi all.

Is there a way to fix the large difference in recorded shows volume vs live tv ?

I know there is a difference between surround and non surround audio, but even when playing back a recorded show that’s not in 5.1 and leaving a live tv broadcast that’s also not in 5.1 the volume is lots louder when the recording starts playing.

I have the audio coming back to the pioneer amp through the ARC HDMI from the TV (LG 55”).

It’s somewhat annoying to have to keep reaching for the remote to reduce the volume when playing back recordings and again when stopping playback.

The old T2 didn’t have this issue using the exact same setup. But the V2 does.

Is this only evident on SBS and ABC recordings? I ask as it may be the second audio track - 'Audio Described', in which case press AUDIO to select the other soundtrack.

It's strange. Several users are reporting this now, but I just can't reproduce this volume difference.

As GG says. Are there any recordings that*don't* display this behaviour?

I did have one show that automatically switched itself to the described audio and I quickly figured that one out and fixed it.

I’ve also now just gone and switched all audio to mpeg preferred and maybe that will fix it. But I’m not sure. Will have to test over a few days.

I saw one other thread where someone was having the opposite problem where recordings were lower in volume. But mine are higher.

I will leave it a few days and see if the change to mpeg audio fixes it. The odd thing is the T2 didn’t behave this way.

Audio Described is relatively recent though.

It seems setting the audio to mpeg audio for the Stations has solved the problem. Odd that the T2 didn’t have the same issue.

The T2 would hop between mpeg and AAC with only the AAC being slightly softer. The V2 would be massively louder when playing back the AAC recordings for some reason.

I would say almost twice as loud.

AAC is a lot quieter than MPEG audio on our T4. The strangeness isn't just on the V2.
