Post by Johfac » Fri May 01, 2020 17:47

The particular USB enclosure you are using may not be honouring the signal to shut down the hard-disks. Is it a Beyonwiz supplied drive?

Is it an old drive? At least one forum member has posted an old USB2 drive didn't spin down whilst a USB3 drive did.

Any DLNA access to that drive from a PC or TV et. al.? Obviously any recordings being made in standby mode will prevent spin down.

Could you say which settings you tried changing? Not many settings have an effect on HDD spindown.

Deselect {/media/}hdd/movie in the miniDLNA server so it's not serving up any content -
MENU>>Setup>>Network>>DLNA server>>MENU>>YELLOW/Shares, then select hdd, press OK, select movie, press YELLOW/Deselect, GREEN/Save, GREEN/Save.
Exit back to the main menu and restart the GUI from the Power menu.
Once started, put the V2 to standby and assuming the default 5-min spin down (MENU>>Setup>>Storage>>Hard disk setup>>Hard disk standby after) check the disk.

Tried your suggestion but Hdd still won't spin down. Checked to make sure Hdd is deselected in network which it is. Must be something else that's not letting the drive spin down?

The hdd directory is not selected by default. Drill down to hdd's subdirectories and unselect movie.

Just as an aside, have you tried plugging that HDD into a PC to see if the PC can make it spin down?

Can anyone confirm these drives sold by Beyonwiz definitely obey the spin down setting:

https://beyonwiz.com.au/product-categor ... ard-drive/

Asking as I have a Seagate 1TB 2.5" external USB3.0 drive that won't spin down even when DLNA is disabled, drive is umounted and V2 in standby. However it also does not spin down in Windows when setting in Windows power options "turn off HDD after 1 minute" and enabling "USB selective suspend", so it probably doesn't support spin down. Although I seem to recall it spinning down back when I was using it on a WDLXTV. Although that may have been something like "eject media" (is it possible to issue such a command and then later issue another command to have the drive re-mount itself without requiring the user to physically unplug and re-plug the usb connector?)

It's actually very hard to tell what a particular consumer grade drive will do exactly. Both Seagate and WD have a habit of changing the guts of their external drives from batch to batch. Sometimes these drives are so random that you can have 5,400 RPM and 7,200 RPM drives coming out of the same factory, under the same model number and with the same manufacture date. It's unlikely that Beyonwiz can actually make any guarantees as to what they end up reselling. Beyonwiz try their best to source the most appropriate drives, but they are at the mercy of the HDD manufacturer, just like any other small to medium sized retailer. HDD manufacturers will only listen to customers when they start buying tens of thousands HDDs on a monthly basis for several years in a row. A good example of this is the recent SMR-gate, where the HDD manufacturers silently started replacing normal drives with shingled drives.
