Recording from HDMI output to V2

Post by AlbertPark » Mon Apr 06, 2020 15:03

Given that the V2 has no HDMI input, unlike older BW models, is there any way at all that an HDMI stream can somehow be seen and recorded on a V2?

I suspect the answer is "no", but I wanted to check in case for example it could somehow be converted into a stream that Kodi could see, eg using an intermediate black box, or perhaps brought in via USB.

Thanks

That's correct.

You'd need to do the conversion of the HDMI stream into a media format that the V2 can play on some other device. That would work, but I don't have any suggestions of what devices you might use.

External conversion is required.

You could use a PC with a USB-connected HDMI capture device to record the stream, but then the V2 is just acting as a media playback device.

An impractically expensive option would be a HDMI-DVBT converter box.
These run from several hundred to a thousand bucks, and are not really designed for a once-off type application like this. (Rather more for distribution to a number of clients).

I used a 1080p HDMI recording converter linked to a 2TB USB drive for a while. Inconvenient but workable.

Bought it off eBay and as sold to gamers. Cost about $80.

Had to route the HDMI source via a splitter to defeat HDCP.

What's this device? Does it just dump an encoded HDMI stream straight onto a directly-attached harddisk? No PC required?

This is what I was using before the T4

Yes it was standalone and operated directly into attached storage. Press the red button to start and stop recordings. I used it before getting the T4. To set it up I had to connect it to a TV once, IIRC. It was a bit finnicky to set up but generally ok. One had to watch the HDD activity light to be sure it was working.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and confirmation of what I suspected.

The HD game capture card is interesting and seems to allow manual recording of HDMI streams to an external hard drive as mpeg4 files, but isn't using the capabilities of the V2 itself for timed recordings etc. But thanks.

Presumably an older BW model with HDMI input would work though.

Yes, but you can't get around needing to ensure that the source device is running when the Beyonwiz timer runs.
