V2 compatible with T2 USB tuner

Post by inedshead » Sun Mar 29, 2020 22:18

To my disappointment, my 5yr old T2 decided not to wake from its sleep this morning, and I soon realised there was a weird ticking noise and flashing LED from the inside, but that was all signs of life.

Been researching the V2 today, but was wondering if the external USB tuner I received with my T2 would work as a 3rd tuner on the V2? Also is there any luck that my hard drive from inside the T2 will be recognised on a V2 or does it use a different file format system?

Yep, the T2 tuner should work fine.

If you pull out the T2 hard-disk and sick it into a USB enclosure, it will work on the V2. The format is exactly the same, though you should avoid restoring your T2's settings backup onto the V2 as it could cause problems.

Can't help but wonder if the ticking noise might be coming from the HDD. You should check because it may be that you need a new HDD. The T2 may be salvageable if so.

Ticking, ....... sounds like a power supply issue.

Thanks for all the responses. Glad HDD and tuner are compatible :D

I removed the hard driver from the unit as the ticking sounded like it was coming from underneath, but instead found the ticking to be roughly in time with an LED that is flashing. Is the suggestion to try another 12V, 3A power supply or more so the sub-transformer in the unit itself?

I'd love to be able to repair the the T2 as I had no fault with it prior and would be happy to continue using it if I can.

I took a short video clip of the D11 flickering and showing where it is roughly on the board: https://photos.app.goo.gl/XSN7MDzr59kTDd828

Also to mention that when the unit originally froze, the front power light was solid red. After I turned power off and back on, the light has never come back on, so may well be power related although the DC adapter's blue light looks as bright and consistent as what it was from the start.

PS. Please ignore the sound of the dog snoring in the background.

I'd try it briefly with a 12v, 2.5 or 3A supply and see if it looks normal. If so, a full reboot.

If the LED doesn't come on steady then I suspect that an on board voltage regulator fault is at play. If so, Warkus may be able to fix it. See: Decisive Computer Solutions

Thanks mate, you're a star... tried an old 12V 5A power supply I had which used the same DC jack and it's working a treat. Life is back to normal! Dusted off the old multimeter and measured original supply at 12.4V but down to 1.4A which is somewhat odd... but that's power for you.

Thanks again! :D :D
