File format of recordings

Post by tviz » Tue Mar 10, 2020 17:50

I've ordered the V2, waiting for it to arrive. Just want to know what the format of recorded TV is? Edit... thanks, it's .ts and a single file, all good.

My DP-P1 is still going, still on original hard drive. Purchased in 2009, it just won't die. I'm excited about the upgrade to V2, it will be interesting to see the changes.

It is orders of magnitude easier to get recordings off the T/U/V series Beyonwiz units too.

FTP, SCP, SMB, HTTP pick your poison!
You can even record directly into your computer's hard-disk over the network of you really want to.

... old DP-P1? I always found it challenging to retrieve the files and make a single video from the recorded bits, so am hoping the process is easier.

Tools to make that fairly easy have been around for a long time.

But on the new series (T/U/V models), it is easier.

Thanks for replies, good to know it's a single file.

Looking forward to connecting it to my NAS. I have a Synology DS218+, so should be enough options in there to get it running smoothly.

Quick question: Not a huge deal, but I'm guessing there is no option to adjust audio sync when playing back media files from other sources on the V2? I noticed the audio was a fraction behind the video for some odd videos in my collection that were obtained from internet. I have not noticed any settings in the menus related to audio sync, but perhaps it's hidden somewhere?

Further thoughts on the V2:
Three weeks in and I'm very happy with the V2. Better than I was expecting. I like the detailed customisation and huge choice of options. A massive upgrade over the P1. It took a few nights of messing around to discover and tweak everything. Then I connected my Harmony companion, and put away the Wiz remote forever. I linked up my NAS, and after a bit of config got it all working smoothly.

My power meter says it uses around 10 watts, which is amazing. That's with external USB drive attached too. By comparison, the P1 was more than double that. I'm also glad the USB drive spins down when the V2 is in standby. I did notice though, this only happens with a modern USB3 drive. Which is fine, but the first drive I tried, an old USB2 portable drive, remained powered on and spinning when the V2 was in standby.

The T/U/V series Beyonwizes all send a spin-down command to the HDD if the HDD hasn't had any I/O for more than (default) 5 min. Perhaps your older drive doesn't respond to the command. Or perhaps you didn't wait long enough.

You can set the spin-down timeout in MENU>Setup>Storage>Hard disk setup>Hard disk standby after.

Timeshift is shut down in standby so that the disk can be spun down. If you enable debug logging and direct it to /media/hdd, that can prevent the HDD from spinning down, or wake it up unexpectedly.

There *are settings* for audio delay, but I don't think they actually do much, or at least noone has really discovered how to make them do something.

In MENU->Setup->AV setup->AV settings

Down the bottom, there are separate AC3 and PCM delay settings. These have always been a bit hit and miss with the T and U series too.

You may have better luck with setting delays when playing media files using the Kodi plugin though.

Thanks, I didn't notice those settings before. I will have a look, but actually it appears as though it was only that one video file. Everything else I've played since has been fine.

Been a while since I last played with those settings. I never found a way to make them work.

If I recall correctly, negative values actually caused problems. I recommend you back up your settings before playing with it to minimize any harm.
