Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Just one I spotted this morning, for anyone keen to add a whack of internal storage into the V2.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/481021
$120 delivered.
This is a U3 class card, but doesn't have an "Application performance rating" as far as I can make out.
The U3 rating specifies the maximum and minimum speed of the card, whereas application performance is more about the sustained random performance and IOPS. (It's possible the A1/A2 ratings are also smoke and mirrors too, depending on what device you are suing to read/write from).
This card should still be more than enough for typical use of the V2 though I imagine.

Here is another one from Ozbargain.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/482876
This one is U3 and A2 rated, and cheaper.
The promo deal is finished, but the regular price is still very good.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
The Samsung EVO plus seems to get better reviews and performance than the Lexar, though both similar. The Samsung is supposed to have a slightly faster burst write speed (90Mbps vs 70).
Currently the Samsung EVO Plus 512GB Micro is at https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-EVO ... wEDBdld~x for $135.75 with discount code, plus postage.
The Lexar 512GB is cheaper at $115.95 and free postage at https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lexar-Micro ... Sw1pxdZywe

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Prices are up again now.
Just one quick question, is there a benefit to getting such a large SD card? If you use it to time shift it's overkill and if you use it to record shows onto it will fill up pretty soon I'd imagine. So just wondering if there's another benefit to a larger card that I can't think of?
I've just taken the plunge to upgrade my old P2 (which still does everything fine except deal with the new HD stations) and am wondering how I'm going to set up my new toy.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
A 500GB card is plenty big enough of you only need it for occasional recording. The original DP series shipped with hard drives that size, so it is a familiar option for some who are upgrading.
I still think though that it is best used as local storage for timeshift and cache purposes, and recordings can go to a plug in drive or nas, so for that, you are right, a big card would be overkill.
It's just nice to point out the bargains to give people the option .

Amazon are doing a cheap 400 GB card at the moment, $89 delivered.

I've read that prices for flash memory and memory in general may be set to fall towards the end of the year due to an oversupply.
Expect more bargains to come!

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Well I do have a 3TB portable drive plugged in so I imagine I'll do most of the recording on that. The sd card will be just in case of hd failure, and to store other files.
Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Yep, that's a decent plan.
Remember too that the SD card will be mounted as "HDD", and any USB drives will then no longer be shared by default.
In your case, if you are sharing the root directory, this is less of a problem, but this can also be worked around by shaing each of the drive movie folders separately.
Having your backups, timeshift and logs going to the SD card will mean that USB drives can be mounted and unmounted on the fly as required (or at least it should allow that!).
Meanwhile, I'd noticed that the Amazon US store has the Samsung Evo SD cards down cheap at the moment too.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
My thoughts exactly. Once I get around to playing with OpenATV, I imagine I could store the rom images there as well.
Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Possibly. Though the most recent recovery images support booting multiple firmware images off internal flash if preferred. The V2 has a stack of internal flash. A nice future enhancement to the Beyonwiz firmware would be a multiboot-friendly featureset.
prl has managed to get his v2 multibooting, but its not something I have personally been too inspired to try.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
The ATV I'm currently running can't install images correctly. If I, say, am running in ATV and tell it to flash an ATV image to slot 2 (where it's running) from, it flashes to slot 1 and clobbers my Beyonwiz image (which I can't install anywhere else). To flash an ATV image, I have to rename it so that it looks like a ViX image and put it in the ViX directory for downloaded images, then run ViX and flash the renamed image to the correct slot.
Setting up the multiboot at the start was a bit tricky, but I eventually go there. I think I had to flash ViX into slot 1 from a recovery image, clear the partition table on the mocroSD card and then partition the SD card from the image manager in ViX.
ViX and ATV now come with a fancy new boot program that allows you to partition the microSD card. It also partitions the internal flash, so I'm too chicken to try that, out of fear that either I won't be able to get the Beyonwiz firmware to flash into an already-existing slot, or that it will just overwrite the partition table and clobber any other images I have on internal flash.
Also, a Beyonwiz install from USB installs /boot/START_* files that are incompatible with ViX, and have to be edited to allow ViX to start up without getting into a GUI restart loop. Fortunately, thous changes are backwards compatible with Beyonwiz and ATV firmware.
tl;dr - not for the faint of heart

Seems like some decent deals on some "High Endurance" U3 class Sandisk cards on Amazon.
These might possibly be more suited to timeshifting duties.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
I'm running my V2 without a HDD, using the T4 storage over wired network.
Playing back recordings is snappy but timeshifting is rubbish. Trying to rewind live tv, it just struggles.
Can I whack a micro SD card in and just timeshift off it but leave recording to point to the T4? Is this going to solve the problem?
Thanks,
Rob

I'd stick to using skips though and avoid the rew/FF controls entirely.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
For timeshifting, I'm thinking 64GB will be enough. What did you go with?
Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
For time shifting, that should be plenty.
Check some of the links too bargains in this thread and grab one that is U3 speed rated. A "high endurance" version would be even better.

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
I don't think I'm setting mine up correctly.
Periodically, the timeshift stops working and I have to reinitialise the card again to get timeshift working. ie it's like it gets full and isn't clearing prior timeshift recordings.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rob

Re: Bargain 512GB Micro SD Card
Have you tried having a look at the contents of the timeshift folder with File Commander (MENU>Sources / Files) when it's having problems to verify whether it's in fact getting full?
What do you mean when you say that you "reinitialise" the SD card?
