WIZTV and Foxtel Now

Post by raj » Fri May 25, 2018 22:35

G'day,

Will the WIZTV Smart HDMI dongle work with Foxtel Now?

A while back I purchased a Laser Smart TV box for my TV but after downloading the Foxtel Now app, it would not work.

It turned out that Foxtel would not accept it because as far as Foxtel was concerned the Android OS was not for a mobile device. There are only a handful of Smart TVs (Android) that work with Foxtel Now.

I ended up having to get the Foxtel Now app for my iPad, and Chromecast it to a Chromecast 2 on the TV.

This works, however you lose some functionality (such as time shifting) when you Chromecast. If it can work with the WIZTV dongle, this would be a major advantage.

Thanks.

According to the shop webpage it does.

And that is backed up by Wiz HQ's post here.

The Wiz TV is just a HDMI device and connects to a T4/U4 HDMI-IN in the same way. You can't use the T4/U4 timeshift feature on the HDMI-IN service, though you could record the HDMI-IN stream and watch the recording. That would give you timeshift-like features.

However, streaming services are generally on-demand anyway, so unless you are streaming a live service, then you should be able to use the WizTV's own seek controls to jump back and forward.

Seems there may be an issue with Foxtel now app working on WizTV, will confirm more once we get to test fully, you can sign in successfully but then it hangs on the loading screen, not sure if it is dodgy internet connection or something else, although Netflix, Stan etc work just fine so unlikely to be internet connection / speed timing out..

Any update on this?

I have a friend who is trying to decide on what way to go with Foxtel and the ability to record programs that are only broadcast in the wee small hours without being re-broadcast during the day.

Thanks.

Tell your friend not to bother.
After 3 hours of uninterrupted streaming (i.e. you don't press any buttons on the remote), Foxtel Now will display a message "Are you still watching" (or words to that effect). If you don't press 'ok' within a few minutes, you get taken back to the main menu, and whatever you were streaming stops. :(

I should add that you can plug in any streaming box into the T4/U4 (as long as you connect it to a 'hdcp remover' splitter).

Does this mean Foxtel Now works on the dongle or is it a general observation about Foxtel Now?

Regardless, I can't imagine me not pressing a button for 3 hours!

I use the dongle for YouTube, Stan, TenPlay, SBS and iView. Given up on the rest. With Stan, I download episodes because I still get a fair bit of buffering, despite being on NBN 50 with TPG. Recently added an SD card reclaimed from an old phone because I ran out of storage. Yet to try it out but the dongle did complain the card was looking like it would be too slow.

I think that implies that there's no-one there to press the buttons.

I know nothing about the dongle. It was a general observation about FoxNow (regardless of what you use to view it).
