Images added above, full specs available soon but basically it runs Android 6 Marshmallow (couple of years old but was most stable on this device from our tests), quad-core, 2g Ram 8G flash, USB and SD Ports, external IR.

The little that's here and on the Beyonwiz Web pages is all that's known about it.
It was showing as out of stock and on back order on last time I looked. I haven't heard of anyone having bought one.

As long as it is plugged into your T4 or U4's HDMI-IN via a suitable HDMI splitter, then I couldn't imagine why not.

Well, according to the popups that appear when in the 'Wiz shop page, those dongles have been selling like hotcakes.
There was an email campaign on Thursday saying the dongles were available -

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
Is there likely to be HDCP restrictions on this dongle? I've no idea. I was just thinking this is not like one of the big boys' releases.
Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
I'd say it would be imposed by the hardware/driver/OS combination.Grumpy_Geoff wrote: ↑Sat Apr 21, 2018 19:39Is there likely to be HDCP restrictions on this dongle? I've no idea. I was just thinking this is not like one of the big boys' releases.
I doubt that you'd be able to even run any of the streaming applications unless the HDCP was intact on the device.

Excuse my ignorance. How can the dongle be plugged directly into a T4/U4 and play Netflix or Stan as stated in the Beyonwiz video?

To that I wouldn't know. If it can indeed so that then I am surprised since the content companies usually lock that sort of thing down.

Yep, that takes care of the 'data in'; what of the 'data out'? There was never any mention in the 'Wiz video of the need for an HDCP-removing intermediate device (e.g. "oh, by the way, you need one of these HDMI splitter thingamies, but lucky for you we just happen to sell them in our shop").
Yes, I saw the wink.
Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
I guess there is a good reason to buy this special Beyonwiz dongle as opposed to any one of the other ones on the market.
Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
Given this stick seems to have Kodi on it, does that mean you can play movies directly from a NAS in full 1080p/4k through the U4 with full access to an external sound system like the Denon? Which device actually runs the video, the Stick or the U4? Also, what are the chances it will receive updates past Android 6 Marshmallow? $100 is a lot to pay for a two-year-old media player if it can't at the very least do any of the above. there is a myriad of more modern and more powerful devices out there with more modern chipsets. I guess my main interest is getting the full movie experience through it including movie info, otherwise, it would be a waste of money for me.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
It is a standalone unit and doesn't even require a U4 to operate.
You could plug it directly into your receiver and use it like any other media box. However if it plugs into the U4, it seems as though you can control it via the U4's remote and HDMI-CEC which is nice.
I don't think it has been announced if it supports 4K output, but I suspect not (only guessing). Either way, if anything is plugged into the U4's HDMI-IN, you are limited to 1080p anyway.
This unit appears to be like many other standalone media player devices, but it has the advantage of being able to be controlled via the U4's remote and operates more or less seamlessly with the U4 via its HDMI-IN port. If it does strip off the DRM protection too, as discussed above, then that is an extra bonus too
If you want a 4k rich-meatadata device and don't care about the U4 interoperability, then any other brand of android media player may be an option for you.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
Thanks for that, I don't actually have much in the way of 4k movies yet so I can live without it for the time being. What about the sound system integration though? backdooring the U4 seems like it wouldn't have access to the Denon? I'm currently playing around with the Egreat A5, which is quite powerful but the inbuilt media player has a rubbish way of accessing Metadate and both the inbuilt VidonXBMC and Android Kodi have playback issues, so it just isn't any good for use with the U4, which is why I'm sussing out this media player dongle. Thanks

I'm interested in this for the Kodi ability as well. Netflix and Stan which I don't have but may get Netflix 4k when NBN finally is connected in June, my TV can handle that. If Kodi app works well I may stream instead of downloading so yes I'm interested.

If it is plugged into the U4 then your audio will be limited to stereo. If it is plugged into the receiver then it will presumably support a variety of multichannel audio formats. Hopefully it can bitstream most audio formats via Kodi.

The description of Wiz dongle says:
Browse and download thousands of apps from Google Play such as Netflix, Stan, Foxtel Go and all the catchup TV services
Does Foxtel GO app work with this? Not to be confused with Foxtel PLAY
Generally, This app is restricted to mobile phones and tablets and does NOT work on Android TV boxes.
Simple question, does this device enable one to use the GO app or is the description wrong?

I can't answer about this device, but the Foxtel app (formerly Foxtel Go) works fine on my Minix X8-H Plus, so not restricted to just phones & tablets.Shlocker wrote: ↑Wed Apr 25, 2018 14:04The description of Wiz dongle says:

How is this unit different to say Chromecast and other similar devices, in other words any unique features. If there are then these would be a good selling point. Maybe a comparison grid?

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
So far we can see that it is a standalone Android device that doesn't need to be controlled from a mobile device, so it can do more than just cast. You can control it with its own Tebow, and that means the are a wider number of application options available.
It's now like the Nexus Player or a NVidia Shield.
There is also a fair chance that you won't need a splitter to use it via a Wiz PVR's HDMI-IN.
The fact that it integrates closely with the Wiz's remite control is a big bonus that no other device would support.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
As soon as mine arrives, I'll test that out. Due Wednesday. There is also a fair chance that you won't need a splitter to use it via a Wiz PVR's HDMI-IN.
[Edit:] Arrived Tuesday and set up reasonably quickly (as per the video) using my Google Account. Kodi tried to update to 17.6 stable but reported the upgrade failed. Haven't retried it yet. Need to work out how to install the add-ons for Kodi - found the PVR frontend but damned if I can see how to make it stick! [Edit 2] Kodi now reports as 17.6 without human intervention! And PVR frontend working too.[/Edit2]
Installed iView, SBS on Demand, 7 Plus, 9 Now and TenPlay. Already had an SBS account but I don't trust 7 or 9 to not abuse my marketing details. Sign-up is required to access their content so their apps have been removed. 9Now also appeared to only want to Chromecast so can't say if it could be passed through HDMI-IN. I'll leave 7 and 9 to another brave soul to test.
Had no trouble recording TenPlay directly through the HDMI-IN (with no splitter). Did find it fidgety swapping back and forth between the remote and the mini keyboard to enter details though. Definitely better with a keyboard but it's not perfect. Yet to figure how to scroll on some sites without the remote but part of the problem is my left hand is pretty useless.
Looks promising at first use. Performance on our WiFi network was not great though when streaming YouTube (which records ok with no splitter). Haven't tested streaming with the LAN connection yet (need a longer cable!). The real test will come when we try to stream Netflix, etc, but that is still a ways off. Some domestic issues need sorting first.
As discussed elsewhere, make sure that your framerate is set to 60 for both AV setup and HDMI-IN recording to match the Dongle default. Anything else is quite flaky to crappy when attempting to playback.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
I got mine today. I've had a bit of a play around, but haven't tried anything seriously yet.
Has anyone tried to find a device type for a Harmony that sends the right codes? The remote type code (corresponding, for example, to the 0xABCD of the T3 remote) is 0x10FE, if that helps.
I'm thinking of connecting it to a HDMI port on our HT system, rather than to our T4.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
Except for entering text & sometimes using the mouse cursor I find the U4’s remote is easier to use, but I’ve come to appreciate the backlight on the P9 mini keyboard. Perhaps I should persevere with the keyboard a bit more. I find for some sites I have to use both the mouse cursor & the arrow buttons to scroll depending what I’m trying to achieve.
Have you tried the supplied remote? I find it is a bit slower to get a response compared to the U4's remote at my sitting distance to the U4/WizTV. Both have fresh batteries.
YouTube isn’t as good as on a Windows PC browser but it is better than the one that comes with the U4 f/w.
Did anyone get a user manual with their WizTV? If so does it give any indication what the micro SD card slot & the OTG USB port are intended to be used for? Are they for user media storage for playback purposes only or can some Apps be stored on the micro SD card the same as I do with my Samsung phone?

I'll send them the inage along with some text descriptions. Do these key command names seem correct?
(Specifically "option", "pointer select" and "delete". Should delete maybe say "backspace"? And do the other descriptions match their actual function in practice?)
The WizTV comes with an IR remote with the following NEC IR codes.
Device ID = 0x10FE
Key command codes:
0 = 0x01
1 = 0x4E

Yes, I agree on all counts. The U4 remote is better than the native remote. But getting consistency in navigating various apps is a challenge - there isn't any! And the backlight is your friend at times.sub3R wrote: ↑Fri May 04, 2018 21:05Except for entering text & sometimes using the mouse cursor I find the U4’s remote is easier to use, but I’ve come to appreciate the backlight on the P9 mini keyboard.
I'd be lost without the keyboard entering text - the pop-up keyboard is not easy to use.
+1
YouTube isn’t as good as on a Windows PC browser but it is better than the one that comes with the U4 f/w.
No manual. Just the setup guide. I take it the micro SD is straight storage but I've lost the spare card I had so haven't tried it out yet. No idea what OTG does though.
Did anyone get a user manual with their WizTV? If so does it give any indication what the micro SD card slot & the OTG USB port are intended to be used for? Are they for user media storage for playback purposes only or can some Apps be stored on the micro SD card the same as I do with my Samsung phone?
Not the OEM but I notice the first Toshiba remote code entry in the U4 manual is also 819.prl wrote: Anyone got any idea who the OEM might be?
BTW, the full list of remote codes there is incomplete - it stops half-way through the letter "T" - Toshiba only appears in the shortlist.

Yes, I'd noticed that. It didn't help me find a Toshiba model number, though
I also noticed that. It's the same in the copy of the online manual that I downloaded.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
After initially having problems getting the dongle to work, both connected to HDMI - IN on my U4 and directly into a port on the TV, I read the post about the need to match the bit-rates and that fixed that issue. However, I have to alternate between the WIZTV and U4 remotes to operate it. Unfortunately my TV only supports keyboard input when connected via DTV and not through any of the HDMI ports, which needless to say makes things very difficult when trying to scroll and entering text. My big problem now though is getting it to go back to the STB mode as pressing the STB button does nothing. I have tried various combinations of buttons and the best I can come up with is the U4 menu and then having to go to the TV guide and select a channel to get back to video mode. At times I have had to resort to powering off and restarting the box. There definitely needs to be an operating manual supplied with this device. Anyone else having similar problems?
Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
The STB button on the remote doesn't actually send any commands on its own, it is a button that sets the remote to send Wiz infrared command codes (as opposed to commands for controlling your TV).
To get back to live tv, you just need to change channel. The WizTV button isn't really that special, all it does is switch the Wiz to the HDMI-IN "channel". You could press the CH+ or CH- button, or press the BACK button to simply return to the last channel you were watching before switching to the WizTV.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
Hi Carljh,
Can I suggest when posting that you break up the problems into discrete paragraphs. It makes it easier for us to respond.
I don't understand why theTV DTV mode has anything to do with text input. When the dongle is in a HDMI port and selected it is controlling the picture. The text input is via the remote or a keyboard if you have one. I recommend that you use a keyboard if you can. Entering text is definitely the weakest aspect of using it.
STB is the button that sets the U4 remote back into U4 control mode. Mine works fine. I assume you have its TV button programmed to 819 as required to control the dongle. My remote swaps between the two control modes as it should.
My dongle is connected to HDMI-IN on the U4. The U4 is connected to a HDMI port on the TV. With the U4 the active device it determines which channel I watch or, if I select the TV Wiz button, the dongle. To go back to live TV I press STB and then select a channel, either by entering a number or pressing CH+ or CH-. I am not having any problems with it setup this way.
The paucity of the Bwiz documentation is a weakness, definitely. And the interface is often difficult to navigate and inconsistent between apps. But the apps are from third parties and Bwiz has no control over them.
Cheers, Paul

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
Thanks for your help guys, using the channel buttons solved the problem.
As for the keyboard only working in the DTV mode, that is the message that I get when I press any buttons on the keyboard when in WIZTV. When I couldn't get the dongle working on my current TV initially, I tried it on my old Samsung and it worked with no problems apart from the keyboard not working there either. With that though, when reading the TV's manual, it stated that not all USB devices were compatible with it.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
What are you plugging the keyboard wireless receiver into? It needs to be plugged into the large USB port on the rear of the WizTV dongle to work with WizTV. I assume you are using the Beyonwiz mini keyboard that came with the WizTV dongle?
I found the keyboard wireless receiver sitting behind the U4 was being partially screened by the U4 & I had to use a short homemade USB extension cable to get reliable keyboard operation at my sitting distance.
Did you get emailed from Beyonwiz two PDF documents; ‘Quick Start Connection Guide’ & ‘U4 Remote control button allocation for WizTV’?
If so, on those it gives information about how to switch back to Live TV from WizTV (item 1) & also what to connect where.

Thank you sub3R, all fixed. I did receive that email and for some reason I neglected to read it. The joke is that I have a mate that is not all tech savvy and every time he asks me something, I say 'have you read the manual'. Seems I should listen to my own advice!

Carl

That’s good Carl. I didn’t know if you had the emailed pdf documents or not. If you didn’t I was going to post them.

Re: Preview and pre-release discussion
For anyone trying to get the WizTV’s keyboard wireless receiver & IR remote receiver in a better location as well as hide some of that excess cable, below is a rough setup I quickly knocked together.
The 83x54x31 black zippy box is from Jaycar. Four holes were drilled for small cable ties & two slots filed for in/out of the IR receiver cable. The USB 2.0 extension cable I shortened to a suitable length (new USB male solder fitting). The supplied rubber feet on the bottom help locate it in line of sight where I want it on the U4’s shelf. Being a black jiffy box, it doesn’t look objectionable (it is always in shadow).
One device being IR & the other wireless, they don’t seem to interfere with each other being close together. One day I'll do a much improved version.
