Trouble with 1080i HD channels

Post by MrQuade » Sun Jun 19, 2016 10:41

Using an Android Nexus 7 (2013), and I had noticed that all of the new commercial HD services (1080i h.264) result in normal audio and a black screen in WizOS using the embedded player. The SD h.264 services play fine though, as does playing the HD channels through the T4 transcoder.

I set VLC as an external player and out looks like the HD services cause a hardware decode error, and VLC falls back to software rendering (and does a terrible job at it).

Seems to be working fine on the Nexus 5 phone. The difference being that Nexus 7 has an Adreno 320 GPU and the Nexus 5 has Adreno 330.

Has anyone else noticed this with their devices as well?

Do you have any options other than VLC? IME it is a mediocre player at best.

Regardless of what player I use, it will be limited to software decoding on the Nexus 7, so not really an option of i want to conserve battery life.

I have a variety of video players installed, but I really only mentioned VLC as it reported that it had fallen back to software.

Actually, trying some other players, it looks like some CAN play in hardware...or at least, they say they are. Very curious.

I did a little reading, and there was talk of some other Adreno 320 based hardware not being able to output 1080i video, but that is a bit different of course.

Also, the Nexus 7 never had any trouble with 1440x1080i50 content (and still doesn't).

Strange.
