WizOS not working with Android 8.1

Hi
I have a U4 with 17.5.20190207 firmware. It's working well in my network.
I recently installed WizOS on my Moto phone (Android 8.1). After installation, when I click on Open I see the Beyonwiz splash screen and then the screen goes blank. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app many times all with the same result.

Has anybody else had this problem or can anyone suggest what the problem might be.

I don't have an Android 8 device to test with.
Have you tried adjusting the app permissions?

Tried the GigaBlue player (based on the same guts)?

I've given the app access to Photos/Media/Files and Wi-Fi connection information.

hmm. Gigablue does exactly the same thing. Goes blank after the splash screen. Must be the phone I guess.

Have you tried using mobile OpenWebif on your Android device to see if the things you want the app for can be achieved that way?

I used to have it working correctly from my Samsung Tab S4 but I can’t remember what version of android it was running. It would have been android 8 something (I’ve just recently updated it to android 9.0).

Since updating to android 9.0 I found that it no longer works but I don’t get the symptoms you are getting. I just get a ‘can’t connect’ error message when trying to connect to either U4 even though everything is still set up correctly. However I can connect to both U4s using OWIF on that tablet via Firefox, & Gigablue also works.

Do you at least get the EPG and bouquets on your android device, or don't even get that far?
I just get an error when I try to stream something, because the U4 attempts to transcode by default (and that appears to be broken atm). If I long-press the service and select "Play" then it will work for me.

I can’t get that far, it just doesn't connect. I get a ‘Connection error. Cannot connect to Beyonwiz U4_01’ popup when WizOS starts.

If I cancel the above popup & select ‘Guide’ it only displays a blank white screen. The only thing I can get to display is the on-screen remote, which obviously won’t do anything.

No. LAN has been rock solid.

LAN:
Router/modem to switch-1 near the router via Ethernet.
Switch-1 to switch-2 near U4_01 via Ethernet, then from switch-2 to U4_01 via Ethernet.
Switch-1 to switch-3 near U4_01 via Ethernet, then from switch-3 to U4_02 via Ethernet.
Switch-1 to a Laptop via Ethernet.
Any wireless connected devices connect to the router/modem based on their MAC address being whitelisted in the router.

Android device and U4 are on the same subnet?
Yes.

All reserved IP addresses only.

You're not connecting your Android device to a guest WiFi network?
No.

Since WizOS stopped working; in addition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 being upgraded to android 9.0, it also had a security update & both U4s had USB 19.3 20190718 f/w updates.

I plan to update the T2 to 19.3 20190718 f/w via USB soon so I’ll see what happens with that before & after. If that doesn’t disclose anything I’ll delete WizOS, re-install & setup to see if it works then.

It didn’t work on the T2 either after a USB install of 17.5 20190207 or after updating to USB 19.3 20190718, but I did find the problem. The clue was in the very basic setup in Gigablue, which works.

To be able to select any of my Wizzes in WizOS, a custom setup of WizOS is required. So after taking a record of these settings I deleted all settings & tried the recommended automatic setup of just the T2, & it worked. Like Gigablue, automatic setup in WizOS does a very basic setup, but unlike Gigablue it only allows access to one Wiz, so it wasn’t suitable for my purpose.

I re-entered the previous custom settings for the T2, & WizOS failed to connect again. Deleting & re-entering the various settings one at a time I found the cause to be the ‘DynDNS address’ field. Even though this was the correct address, WizOS wouldn’t connect to the T2 with this field filled in. When I deleted the field & left it blank it worked fine. I confirmed the exact same thing occurred on both U4s.

Problem solved, WizOS now connects to the Wizzes again.

Far out, I was going to mention this one but figured you wouldn't have filled that in.

You only need DynDNS if trying to connect from the Internet. You should also never do that anyway since that would be terribly insecure.

The reason it probably worked in the past and not now is because the Wiz now rejects any IP addresses that are not on your local subnet (hence my questions about being on guest WiFi and other subnets earlier). If you connect using a DynDNS address while you are on your local network, you are actually routing your traffic via your router, so that the traffic appears to be coming from the Internet (hence the Wiz will reject it).

It was introduced with 17.5, but it can be overcome by "Allow access form VPN" in the OpenWebIf settings. It's possible that you re-flashed around then and forgot to enable that option?

I don’t remember making any changes to OWIF settings except to logging, & I don’t think I’ve ever had ‘Enable access from VPNs’ enabled in OWIF config.

But anyway, problem solved & I’ve learnt more about these boxes.

The setting isn't actually in the web interface itself, bit rather it's a plugin setting. It is accessed via MENU->Setup->Plugins->Plugin browser->OpenWebIf->Enable access from VPNs

I think I added to my post just before you posted. I don’t know why I only initially mentioned OWIF settings. OWIF settings weren’t relevant.

The only thing I’ve ever changed in OWIF Configuration was the Beyonwiz name for each Wiz that appears at the top of OWIF.

At one stage I did a USB install of 17.5 f/w without restoring settings, so perhaps ‘Enable access from VPNs’ was enabled in earlier versions of 17.5 f/w but not in later versions.
