Lossless mpeg4 Editor

Post by stevebow » Tue May 28, 2019 14:12

Would anyone have any recommendations for a lossless mpeg4 editor (i.e. will edit on I-frames and not re-compress video) either Windows or Mac please? If it can edit between I-frames and "smartrender" (re-compress only the remaining frames in the relevant GOP) that would be ok too. TIA.

Have you looked at TS Doctor or VideoRedo Suite? You can get free trials.

Does MPEG Streamclip do MPEG4? If it does, it comes at the best possible price. It's available for both Windows and MacOS.

MPEG Streamclip is very old and hasn't been updated for years. Buggy and temperamental depending on the how many wishbones or eye of newt you have laying around....

I prefer wool of bat, myself.

I don't do much video editing, and it's mostly MPEG2 when I do, but I generally dont have problems with Streamclip.

No, it's MacOS that needs wool of bat. XP may need lizard's leg and owlet's wing. Win8 probably needs the poison'd entrails.

MacOS = get your credit card out. I'll ask a MAC guru friend of mine about mpeg4 editors but I doubt if there would be any free ones. MPEGSteamClip may well work better on a MAC than PC - it was originally an Italian program and there were handy hints on one of the Italian forums but that was way back when...

I've been using Avidemux for my recordings from the Beyonwiz T4 unit and it works perfectly for both mpeg2 and mp4/h.264 codec based recording files. Just give a bit of spare length on both sides of your trim edit points for ABC TV recordings due to them doing 'long GOP' to the max with their encoding.

Download from http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
