T4 no internet connection
T4 no internet connection
My T4 recently returned from hospital after being hit by lightning.
All is now good, except I cannot log on to Ice TV.
I get the message 'check your internet connection'.
I have checked by plugging in the cable to my laptop and the internet powers up fine.
So either I messed up on filling in the information (I have checked very carefully) or the ethernet port on the T4 is faulty.
Any thoughts on how to check the ethernet port or solve this problem would be appreciated.
Regards
Mike

Re: T4 no internet connection
Check whether the internet is configured in MENU>Information>Network as a first step. Post a screenshot if you're not sure how to interpret what's on the screen.

Hi Peter
Under 'network information" it says
Hostname beyonwizt4 Internet (+ a small green light)
When I go to Setup>Network> network restart and press OK, the T4 locks and a reboot clears it.
Ice TV gives a 'new connection error'
In Menu> network browser, I get >Can not scan network because interface is not properly configured. Please configure the interface and try again'.
I hope this helps. Thanks Mike

Re: T4 no internet connection
What about the rest of the screen?
Not good.
Perhaps the adapter is toast.
What do you have in Setup>>Network>>Network interface?
Re: T4 no internet connection
Hi Grumpy
On 'Network Information', the rest of the screen is blank.
I don't have a heading 'Network Interface' at all.
Not looking good. It sounds like the network adaptor may be fried.

Re: T4 no internet connection
So no network then
You don't have this?
You may have to resort to a USB/ethernet adapter, e.g. from MSY -

Re: T4 no internet connection
But nexus7 has also said that the "Internet" indicator is green. That can only be green if DNS is working and the PVR can "ping" some well-known network addresses.

Sure, that's what he said, but this doesn't sound like there is a working connection -

How can there be a working connection if there's no network interface?
Re: T4 no internet connection
Hi nexus7.
Can I suggest you reflash the T4 but don't restore settings. My experience is doing so restores functionality after all manner of faults on my wizzes. Corrupted firmware could explain your problems.
If the LAN connection is restored you can then risk a restore settings knowing that, if it breaks, another reflash will restore functionality and that the problem was corrupt settings.

Hi Grumpy
I have no "Network Interface" in my Network headings. I have 'network adaptor selection' and 'Password' directly below.
Your suggestion of a USB /ethernet adaptor looks good - I presume I just plug it in and attempt to co0nfigure it in 'Network Settings' ?

Hi Paul
I guess by 'reflash' you mean download the latest firmware onto a USB stick, plug it into the T4 and 'reflash' the firmware?
Will this delete my saved recordings?
Thanks for your help Mike

Re: T4 no internet connection
Yes Mike - that is what I meant. And no, your recordings will not be affected. First time DO NOT restore settings. This will tell almost immediately if the ethernet port is ok or not. If it fails then you can try the wifi adapter alternative.
Reflashed my T4 a few days ago with different versions of firmware several times without losing anything. I had a network connection but terrible transfer rates.

Re: T4 no internet connection
Out of interest, what firmware version is your T4 running? Check MENU>>Information>>About. What is shown in the "Revision" field? (or in older firmware the "Last Upgrade" field)?
The latest firmware is version 20211010, available from here - viewtopic.php?f=45&t=14964
See instructions here - http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/media/downlo ... esV163.pdf
Ensure the USB thumb drive is FAT32 format.
Extract the firmware. Ensure that the resultant "beyonwiz" directory is at the top level of the thumb drive.
Take a settings backup before you flash the new firmware, but as per Paul's advice, don't restore post the initial f/w update and see if the ethernet adapter is detected.

Given the absence of portions of the network display and the locking up when restarting the network, I'm liking your idea more and more there "99".

Re: T4 no internet connection
Thank you Paul, Grumpy and prl.
I have re-flashed the firmware, but still no internet -
"no network devices found", Interface is not properly configured etc etc.
So I have ordered a USB /ethernet adaptor as you recommended.
I will report back when it is installed - I may need help to configure it.
Thanks Mike.

Re: T4 no internet connection
Did it actually update though?
Did you see a display on the TV -
"USB update detected
Press ^ button to start update"?
Did you then press the *front panel* channel-up button?
Did you then see some or all of these steps on the TV -
"Updating splash screen"
"Updating kernel"
"Updating software"
Eventually (4-5 mins later) followed by -
"Finished
Remove USB and press power button"?
Re: T4 no internet connection
Hi Grumpy.
No - you are right - The first time looked like reboot, not what you described.
I tried again this morning and it took 5 - 10 minutes. It looked as you described.
Unfortunately it locked up at "Please wait while we prepare your network interfaces". A reboot got the machine going again.
So still no Internet - I will await the arrival of the USB/ethernet adaptor.
Thanks again Mike

Sadly, looks as though the ethernet port is fried. The wireless adapter involves selecting it from the network adapter interface menu.
One trouble I had last time I tried is that automatic setup didn't work so I had to manually enter the three relevant values, after which it worked fine.

Re: T4 no internet connection
I don't know what Mike actually bought, but I linked 2 USB/ethernet adapters from MSY.
It's been a year since I last used one on my U4, but from memory it took a few reboots to get it detected, then I could enable its ethernet interface.

The wireless adapter was detected ok after the reboot on the T4 but when I went to Menu>>Setup>>Network>>Network adapter selection>>Network settings/Info and tried using Automatic configuration (DHCP) it gave nonsense addresses for the device IP and gateway. The ethernet adapter didn't have the same issue.
Turning Auto DHCP off allowed me to enter the IP and Gateway Addresses: 192.168.1.xxx; 192.168.1.1. I think I had to fix the netmask too: 255.255.255.000.

Re: T4 no internet connection
I bought a USB/ethernet adaptor as you guys recommended and re-flashed the firmware, but it locked up on "Please wait while we prepare your network interface".
It took another firmware re-flash to get it going - this time selecting 'later' at the network selection panel.
Nothing shows up in >Settings>network - just blank boxes.
Is it 'back to the fixers'?
Thanks for your help so far.
Regards Mike

Re: T4 no internet connection
Reboot with the adapter already attached. You may need to do a few reboots before it gets detected.
Then see if you can enable the adapter.
Please confirm your firmware version from MENU>>Information>>About>>Revision.
Re: T4 no internet connection
Hi Grumpy
Thank you for your comments.
I've tried a few more re-flashes, but no luck - same response - nothing.
I have checked the ethernet cable and it works with other devices.
My firmware is the latest 20211010.
I'm not sure where to go from here

I'm assuming it's still the same as before -
Have you tried rebooting the T4 with the USB-ethernet adapter already attached with an ethernet cable inserted into the adapter?
Is the USB port confirmed working?

And have you tried both the front and rear usb ports for the usb adapter? I normally used the front port on the T4 until I swapped to wired. Had to reboot to detect the adapter. Usually, I power it off completely for a minute or so when I have this sort of problem.
It is possible that one or more voltage regulators on your motherboard are dead, causing the problems. If so, they are likely to be repairable components. If not repairable I might be persuaded to part with a T3 since I'm moving soon and have fewer spots to watch TV in the new digs.

Good news! I finally have an internet connection. I used a wi-fi USB dongle as suggested by http://www.nasaelectronics.com.au
I am still working on the drop-outs. Thank you to all for your help.

Re: T4 no internet connection
Yet more good news. My dropout problem is now fixed! (fingers crossed).
The problem was an intermittently faulty HDMI cable! It checked many times, but only showed up when bending the cable back and forth near the terminal, and the TV picture & sound dropped out.
