Looks pretty good so far, but noticed that Endeavour tonight (ABC) has no data and in IceTV XML is S05E02. Also Midsomer Murders tonight shows as
S20E02 in XML

I just did a JSON download of the IceTV EPG for the ACT.

It shows:
S05E02 <Endeavour> <Cartouche>
S20E02 <Midsomer Murders> <Death Of The Small Coppers>
S16E01 <Midsomer Murders> <The Christmas Haunting>

They are the correct series/episode numbers for the shows with those subtitles, according to IMDb.

I'm not seeing that info when I look at the EPG in OWIF or in the EPG on Beyonwiz, so what do I have set differently?

In the IcetvDesc plugin I have all 3 Options on and I have long filenames set on the Bwiz

Have you reset the IceTV epg? Only new entries are processed, existing entries will remain unchanged.

Just updated after installing IceTVDesc_1.0.6.5. The missing data is no longer missing. Looks really good now!

Thanks Adoxa :D :D 👍

PS Briefly puzzled by the reference to options and how to access them until I checked the Plugins menu item. First thought was the EPG menu.

I am happy to see all the season/episode year info that has become available.
But I am a mite confused as to the config item
"add season/episode number to recording name."
My assumption is that I would see something like
(NCIS Season X Episode Y) (Yesterday Date) in the listing
I don't have that.
Just NCIS and date of the recording

But as I toggle down through my list the info is available in the description.
Its not a show stopper,
Have I misunderstood the meaning, or is there another separate config item elsewhere that I haven't enabled?

just something that I thought would be presented.

It's not named the best, it's for the file name (... - NCIS - SxEy.ts). There was an argument made that it shouldn't be added to the title, as that might interfere with AutoTimers (although unlikely to be used by IceTV users), but it would also interfere with Series2Folder, too (e.g. the title is no longer NCIS, but NCIS Season...). If you're not bothered by that I'll rename the existing option to "file name" and add another option for "title" (and another option for the format?). Of course, if it's added to the title it will automatically be added to the file name (unless I detect it and remove it) and there'd be no need to add it to the description. In that case I'd prefer the "NCIS - SxEy" form, which I think may also work with Series2Folder (it splits on " - ", so should still pick up the title separate from the numbers).

The original intent of the request was to have it in the filename so that scrapers in Plex/Kodi/etc can recognise the season and episode number.

It is a catch 22 when it comes to IceTV and Series2Folder though, as it makes auto-filing of the shows very difficult.

Unless prl can provide a modified Series2Folder that ignores SxxExx strings when making matches ;).

Adding SxxExx to the recording title would definitely stop the current Series2Folder from filing series recordings with that added. I'll think about making Series2Folder work with that the episode info gets added to the title.

There are definitely users who use AutoTimers with IceTV. AutoTimers can do things that IceTV can't do.

My original thought was
Great, hopefully there would be a way of picking up different series and placing them in separate folders with the series to folder option.

I watch quite a few multi series shows that tend to confuse if you just watch then in date order.
Law and Order, NCIS, Silent Witness, Blue Bloods all come to mind.

But if its too messy to implement, not to worry.

I'm V happy with what I see now.

Cheers

If episode information is in the title, perhaps Series2Folder could (optionally) make folders per season, so make folders NCIS S01, NCIS S02, and so on.

Re: Season/Episode info

It won't work for existing recordings, since the info isn't stored anywhere. The way I'm doing it atm would change the title in the EPG itself - that's what would cause issues with AutoTimers/Series2Folder/EPG searches and the like. However, if you only want it for recordings, I might be able to do the same thing I do for the file name and just add it to the name in the movie list. You would still need the numbers option (to store the info) and it would only work for new recordings made after an IceTV refresh. That still wouldn't work with Series2Folder unless I change the actual name, which now seems what you actually want - "NCIS Season 2" distinct from "NCIS Season 18". Series2Folder works on the file name, so an alternative option that does that would keep the title for EPG searches and the distinct name for Series2Folder.

To summarise: rename current option "recording name" to "file name" to better indicate what it does and make it a choice between "- SnnEnn" and "(Season n)". The former should remain Series2Folder compatible using the original name (Name - SxEy will use folder Name); the latter will use separate folders for each season (Name (Season 2), Name (Season 18)). Then what I could do is put the episode number into the meta, so the movie list title shows that (Name (Episode x))...

Possibly, but what adoxa is proposing would do separate (top-level) folders for seasons without having to change Series2Folder at all :)

However having more than one way of representing the season in the filename makes it a little more complicated for Series2Folder to do anything intelligent about seasons.

Is the source code for IceTVDesc online somewhere? I'd like to check all the interactions between IceTVDesc and the recording filename formats to check whether Series2Folder can cope with the changes.

If Series2Folder could detect the SnnEnn in the file name there'd be no need for IceTVDesc to do anything else (although I should still rename the option; I should also actually disable it when the other options are disabled, or make the options independent).

Thanks, adoxa.

In fact Series2Folder tries to get the recording name info for the folder name from the .meta file first. It only extracts from the filename if that fails.

I was half-joking, but when I thought S2F was using the file name I could have the season in the file (S2F would thus create separate season folders) and the episode in the meta (the movie list would thus show episode numbers); the EPG would be able to retain the original title. Since S2F does use the meta that won't work, so I'll go back to the original plan and add the season to the title directly.

I suggest sticking to the de-facto standard of formatting filenames using "S%02dE02d".

When generating filenames, do not offer other formats as that will cause unnecessary proliferation of alternatives and those will only serve to complicate the parsing of filenames.

Conversely, when handling filenames, be prepared to parse the above format and act accordingly.

I know the temptation is there to offer the maximum flexibility and numerous features, but the resulting increases in complexity are probably not the best choice for a consumer electronics appliance.

+1. No need to overcomplicate file names.

In S2F the ability to opt between "Sxx" or "Season xx" for naming subfolders when saving would be more than enough for me.

I have 151 episodes of Heartbeat which lack season information so I manually number them as we watch them. Anything that automates that process would be good.

Here's the version that adds an option to put the season in the title (single digit seasons get a padding space, rather than zero). Back to being untested, I'm afraid. With both file name and season options the season will be removed ("...Title - SnnEnn.ts"), but with only the season it will remain (since it's the actual title: "...Title (Season n).ts").

Hi Adoxa,

v.1.0.6.6
The Add season to title option seems to be working in reverse.

When disabled I get - House Hunters (Season 167)
When enabled I get - House Hunters

I also would prefer leading zeros not padded spaces for single digit seasons.

I don't have a problem with "S01", but "Season 01" just doesn't look as nice, imho (and the space is so " 2" still comes before "10"). But if that's what you want... Maybe the short form would be better, anyway? With a dash? "Title - Snn". S2F would still place in separate folders (that's the title in the meta) and the file name would be back to "normal" (although then S2F wouldn't use a separate folder, should it need the file name).

I don't have a problem with "S01", but "Season 01" just doesn't look as nice, imho (and the space is so " 2" still comes before "10").
Oh right, sorry. I hadn't realised you were referring to the spelled out "Season" title version. Comprehension fail on my part :).

I would prefer to keep it simple so just SnnEnn with leading zero where required. I think this is what the scrapers are expecting

Installed v1.0.6.6 on U4 and T3
at first pass it does what I hoped for.
Just now to wait to see how this goes with series to folder.
v.1.0.6.6
The Add season to title option seems to be working in reverse.

When disabled I get - House Hunters (Season 167)
When enabled I get - House Hunters
.
This aberration wasn’t presented after my install
Did GUI restart after the remove and install.

Weird, I don't see anything that would cause that.
Apologies. It seems when you toggle this option the EPG needs to be refreshed as well.

I think that I know what the problem is here - if you change the state of the Add season to title setting, you need to reload the EPG in order for it to "take" (MENU>IceTV>Disable IceTV, Enable IceTV, fetch EPG etc).

Even doing this won't change the titles of any existing timers, and hence their recording titles and filenames.

Yes. I was toggling this option to see what the results looked like without refreshing the EPG in between.

I got caught out the same way :D

It might be useful to add something to the setting's description.

I meant to, but it took me an hour just to get the description to work (who knew there's a difference between Screen, ConfigListScreen and ConfigListScreen, Screen?) and by then I'd had enough and forgotten all about it. I might pop up a message box prompting to refresh.

Anyone who's dug their way through the Python tutorial on multiple inheritance ;) It's not helped by the fact that Python 2.7 and later versions have two different ways of resolving access to object attributes in the presence of multiple inheritance, depending on whether one of the base classes inherits ultimately from object (new-style classes) or not (old-style classes).

In Python 3, all classes are "new-style".

Added "Director" to movies and options prompt to reset the EPG.

I am going to assume that this only runs on 19.3 although I can't find any specific mention of that in this thread.

I very optimistically tried it on my 17.5 T2 and it went into a boot loop as soon as I installed it.

I am now flashing 19.3 20201121 to fix the loop but given my previous many failed tries at running the newer firmware I suspect I may never get to use this plugin. :(

Sorry, yes, the current version was updated to match the current version of IceTV, using the beta firmware. If you can't get 20201121 to work that's a problem in itself, worth investigating (as the beta eventually becomes production). I could work with the older version, but it'd be better to get you working with the newer firmware.

Failed tries?
Reach out for help if you run into difficulty. The beta is running pretty well for the most part, and should be quite a bit better than the production firmware in several ways.

As always, it can sometimes be a case of old settings interacting badly with latest firmware, so in the event of trouble, a clean start is worth trying.
