Bit Error Rate

Post by prl » Fri Mar 19, 2021 15:43

It appears that the drivers for the ARM architecture Beyonwizes (U4, V2) don't report the Bit Error Rate (BER) of the data stream from the tuners (it always seems to read as 0).

Is that correct?

On my Lounge U4 I have seen the OverlayHD skin report "bit errors detected". Usually coinciding with a drop in quality. It seems that the U4 is reporting bit errors.

I can't answer about V2 because the drivers are an undocumented black box.

For the U4, the tuner SDK for Si2168 tuners only supports reporting BER when float support is enabled. However the Linux kernel does not support floating point. The SiLabs SDK code instead reports 0 for all of BER, PER, FER and CNR.

Maybe for USB tuners, but it can not report this correctly for the U4 built in tuners.

Highly likely.

It's not much of an encouragement to make any sort of BER information available to the user.
