SSD disk has crashed
SSD disk has crashed
The T3 has an internal HDD that is only 8 months old, which has failed. Being an SSD disk it was an excellent disk for recordings, as a file listing was very quick, and it did a good job too for timeshift storage. The disk is a WD240 SSD Green.
The disk crashed about a month ago, but it was revived by formatting, and although I lost some stored movies, it worked well since for timeshifting, and recordings went to the NAS.
Now it can't be accessed by the T3, either to format or check the disk, and the check command causes a system crash.
Any confirmation from the crash log attached that this disk is finally past it would be welcome.
And it does seem strange that the disk had such a short service life. Any comments welcome.
Compliments of the season,
Togo

Re: SSD disk has crashed
It appears you were attempting to format the SSD.
The crash log contains some of the dmesg output, indicating the SSD is Kangaroo Edward -
Do you have access to the T3's command line?
Failing that, perhaps format it as NTFS on your computer, then re-format it on the T3.

Re: SSD disk has crashed
Thanks, Grumpy_Geoff.
The disk had certainly had it. I couldn't see it in the T3 in a list of devices, from the command line, or format it in the PC.
The shop replaced it under warranty without any problem.
The fan setting is around 20% for normal use. Is this a common setting? Is it at all likely that the very short life of the SSD was due to heat?

Re: SSD disk has crashed
In my T3 the fan is set to 100% in standby. I don't use an SSD in it though - only in one of the U4's.Grumpy_Geoff wrote: ↑Thu Dec 23, 2021 23:04
Sorry, dunno, as I don't have any experience with the T3.
Heat can affect SSDs and I expect the combination of heat and writing continuously (e.g. timeshift) to the SSD might shorten its life.
In standby my T3 is not overly hot and timeshift is off. Yours may have been hotter but client class SSDs are supposed to tolerate 40c for 8 hours and 30c in standby holding data for a year. (Says Google)
Possibly heat is a factor. However, I'm inclined to think it was a dud SSD to start with.
