T4 hot to touch

Post by nexus7 » Tue Feb 04, 2020 14:13

My T4 is very hot to touch - top rear left hand side.
Is this normal? Is it likely to catch fire?
Does it have a thermal cut out switch?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thank you
Mike

Many T4s suffer failure of the voltage regulators feeding the tuners which are located top rear LHS.

The heat is relatively normal but it can breakdown the thermal cement which then damages the pcb. You will need to open the unit to inspect for damage to be sure. If any signs of damage are visible, repair should be done urgently.

If no damage is evident then extra cooling is a wise investment. The technically skilled might fit a bigger heatsink but for mere mortals a USB fan blowing into the area is a crude option. Noise may be a problem.

There's a detailed discussion here of the problem.

Turn off the power, unplug and wait at least 10 minutes before opening the box to ensure your safety.

Thank you for your very prompt reply Paul.
I will open it up and inspect it as you suggest.

Just on the heat issue.

It is normal for that area to be hot. The tuners use quite a bit of power and put out some heat themselves, plus the heat from the regulators. You should be able to hold your hand on the case in that area comfortably. If you can't then there is some problem.

The tuner posts themselves can get hotter than that again, and can be uncomfortable to hold your finger on.

No matter how big the heatsinks on the regulators are, the T4's case will still get just as hot, since the heatsinks will be pouring off just as much energy. Paul_oz53's suggestion of a fan is the only thing that will stop the case/tuners temperature from rising too high.

However, the larger heatsinks will serve to keep the regulators cooler, and also slow down the breakdown of the thermal paste compound too. This can serve to extend the life of the T4, especially if the original thermal paste is replaced with something more durable.

If your antenna or flylead has a short, the tuners will run hotter than normal. You are also likely to see reception issues.
