Disk still initialising after 8 hours?

I bought a new U4 and fitted a brand new Hitachi 1TB disk. When I turned it on, it asked whether to initialise the disk. I clicked ok, and it said it was initialising. Eight hours later it is still initialising. On the TV, it shows 0/100.

This surely is not normal? Looking for ideas what to do next.....

Clearly not normal, it shouldn't take long (less than a minute from memory).
Whack the disk in an enclosure if you have one and attach to the U4 and format it to see if the error is with the internal connections.
Alternatively chuck it in a computer if you can and see if it can be formatted in that.

After 12 hours, I tried using the remote to stop it. No response at all other than a light on the front responding to the remote. So I turned it off at the back and turned it on again. It went to the timezone setup question. So obviously it had finished initialising the disk, but why did it lock up? Hope it does not mean I have a lemon.....

Hi Davidmorr,

Why do you think that the format has completed? I would be checking that the drive is actually connected properly and working rather than assuming that the format completed successfully.

Because it recorded several programs on it. I might try manually formatting it again just to see what happens.

There's also 'File system check' in Setup.

I tried the file system check and no probs. Also reformatted the disk and again no probs. So maybe a temporary glitch?
