T4 does not play sound track on MP4 and MKV video files

Post by nealc » Fri Dec 02, 2016 00:04

Hi there
I recently managed to get my T4 to navigate to my NAS drive to play video files (MP4 and MKV).
However whenever I play these files ONLY the Video appears and NO audio is available??!
The volume on the T4 is set to Maximum (evident by sound bar on OSD) and that I can play any T4 recording from over the air and watch and listen to any TV Channel! :D
So I am at a loss to explain why my video files on my NAS will not play audio and only the video works
I am using an HDMI Output for the T4 to my TV.

Is there some setting that I am missing?
Thanks
Neal

Hi Neal,

What audio codec is used in the files?
What are the audio settings on the Beyonwiz?
What audio formats is your connected device (TV / Amp / etc) capable of playing?

Regards,
Ian.

One of the things IanSav is hinting at, are some settings that always trick people, the audio downmix settings.

If your mkv and mp4 files contain AAC audio and you are attempting to bitstream the audio, then it aint gonna work, AAC downmix should always be left on, as there is not a receiver out there than can accept AAC over HDMI.

Similarly with the Dolby downmix option. You may only turn off Dolby downmixing if your TV or receiver can receive Dolby or DTS audio. Pretty much any receiver or TV can accept this type of audio, so it is usually safe to disable downmixing so that you get full surround sound.

With these type of problems either missing audio or video it's always a good idea to post a MediaInfo report of one of the files demonstrating the problem.

Something to also be aware of: if instead of connecting T4 > Amp > TV you use T4 > TV > (ARC via Toslink) AMP because I have an old non-HDMI amp you have to check what your TV is capable of decoding/passingthru.

My TV can't do DTS so I can't passthrough DTS even though the amp can decode it.

I just duplicate the soundtrack from DTS > DTS&DD and the problem goes away once DD is selected on the T4 and Amp.

Got back to this today...thanks everyone for responding.
Yes you were all correct....I found the AAC downmixing setting and it began to play the files that did not work.
I did the same with the Dolby Digital option and this worked as well for Dolby files, but the audio didn't sound as good and my Pioneer Amp didn't have any issues playing these files.
I am familiar with MediaInfo and was going to post back but after changing the settings all seemed to be good!
I am such a newbie
Thanks Jazza as well for your feedback...very interesting.
I am going from T4 -> AMP -> TMP using HDMI
My TV supports 4K and I also have a Pioneer BluRay player that upscales to 4K directly to TV as my AMP doesn't support 4K.

If your amp can play Dolby Digital with the downmix option turned off, then turn it off. That way you will get full surround sound and it will indeed sound better.
