U4 Freezing on Playback

I copied 2 x movies from PC to the MOVIE folder on my U4. When playing 2 movies tonight, my U4 has started to freeze at a particular point in each movie. It freezes then reverts to the Movies folder.

I have watched these movie on the U4 before without issue. Also I checked them on my PC just now and they work fine.
Haven't checked any FTA recordings yet.

Any ideas what the problem may be? How do I troubleshoot?

No idea; have you tried downloading again as there is a (very) remote possibility they were damaged while downloading. Another (very remote?) possibility is that there is a physical problem with the HDD.

Have done further testing and am happy to say FTA recordings play back fine.

One of the faulty movies does playback ok now.

The other faulty movie freezes as before. So it must be that file that has the problem.

So all good!

Well its happened again.

I was playing a downloaded movie tonight and it stopped part way through, returning to the Media folder.

I have played this movie before without a problem.

Any ideas?

I haven't seen this behaviour but occasionally have downloaded or recorded a movie that cuts out part way through. It behaves as though there is an EOF byte in the recording.

Usually, I will either edit out a few seconds either side of the glitch on my PC or re-record or re-download the show.

It's rare I can edit it properly in the inbuilt Cutlist editor. Sometimes if the editor can see the end of the show I start a cut close to the glitch and end it a fews seconds later and save the result using execute cuts.

Otherwise, on the Win7 PC I use the commercial removal option of the free Video to Video converter program. Others recommend programs like Video Redo but I couldn't justify buying it.

Again, editing will fail if it can't see past the glitch. If that fails, I resort to a download or redoing the recording if the source was a DVD, Bluray or Foxtel.

In addition to what Paul posted, I find ‘avidemux’ quite good for editing. Edit at keyframes instead of frames for a cleaner edit.

For just cleaning up .ts files (like the recording files on the Beyonwiz T, U & V series) I use ‘TS-Doctor’. But it isn’t free.
