T3 wakes up any time another remote button is pressed

Post by maverick#1 » Sat May 16, 2020 22:54

I have a Beyonwiz DP-P2 and a DP-Lite i in my lounge. Because they're so easy to use and reliable, the wife loves them, which is why they're our main PVRs. Years later I bought a Beyonwiz T3 but the wife hates it and, to be quite frank, so do I. It's slow (you can just about make a cup of coffee while it boots from full shutdown), doesn't have USB3 (so copying recordings to an external HDD takes ages), has flakey tuners (one network always seems to have bad reception) and has an awful remote control. Unfortunately, we're running out of space on the DP PVRs (both have 500GB HDDs), and after several timer recordings didn't get the whole show (due to networks changing the start and finish times of programs) and missing the first episode or two of new seasons of programs we watch, my wife and I have come to appreciate the Autotimer function of the T3 so it has been dragged out of mothballs (metaphorically speaking) to work alongside the DPs in the lounge.

Since putting the T3 back into use, I have discovered that it will wake itself from shutdown any time I press a button on another remote control. At first I thought it was limited to the P2's BR-02 remote and the Lite i's BR-01 remote so I tried changing the remote control code setting on the T3 (Menu > Setup > System > Remote control code settings) from All supported to Beyonwiz T3 (0xABCD), hoping that this would make it respond only to signals from the T3 remote. Unfortunately this didn't work. I also have a Beyonwiz U4 in my man cave so I thought I'd try setting the T3 remote code to Beyonwiz U4 (0xAE97). The T3 responded well to the U4 remote but it would still wake up from shutdown any time I pressed any button on the BR-02 or BR-01 remotes. I then discovered that pressing a button on my LG TV remote would wake the T3 up as well!

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to stop the T3 waking up every time a button is pressed on any other remote control?

Make sure that your T3 has up to date front panel firmware.

Thanks peteru, I'll give it a try. Where can I download the update file? I can't see a link on the Beyonwiz downloads page (https://beyonwiz.com.au/downloads/).

Note that there are reports on the forum of some T3s using the V20057 front panel version that fail to detect their HDD when booting from deep standby. I believe if the T3 is immediately rebooted the HDD is then detected and mounted.
To avoid this issue, I think those T3s are kept in standby instead.

Thanks Grumpy_Geoff, but those instructions appear to be online upgade instructions only. I was hoping that, like the firmware and bootloader upgrades, the front panel upgrade could also be done by USB. This would be much easier in my case. My T3 isn't connected to the internet and connecting it would be a real hassle. I'd have to remove it from my TV cabinet, unplug all the cables, take it to my desktop PC (which is in another room), hook it up to the desktop, set up a network on my desktop (I don't have a network set up at the moment), configure the T3 for the nerwork connection to my desktop, go online, then do the online upgrade. Once that's done, I'd then have to reconnect the T3 back in the lounge room. If the upgrade can be done offline, I'd be able to just download the files to a USB and I wouldn't need to diconnect and reconnect the T3 and set up a new network connection on my PC.

I guess this now leads me to ask, can the front panel upgrade be done offline or can it only be done online?

Thanks for the information, Grumpy_Geoff. That's something I'll have to consider before doing the upgrade.

If I do the upgrade and this problem occurs, can I revert to a previous front panel version? I really don't want to be leaving the PVR in standby 24/7.

UPDATE: I've just checked and the front panel version on my T3 is 20037. Is there any way to back this up in case 20057 results in the HDD issue you mentioned? Or does anyone know if I can revert to an older front panel version via the same online update procedure?

Do you have a wireless USB dongle you could try on the T3?

Unfortunately no, I don't. It's starting to look like my only option is going to be to pull the T3 out and connect it by cable to my desktop PC. I was really hoping to avoid that if possible.

Ask Beyonwiz support if you can do an offline update to the front panel.

Unfortunately no, I don't.

You could spend $23 and get a TP-Link TL-WN822N from MSY.
I wouldn't get the v1 version if it's around, as it uses an Atheros 9001 chipset, for which there may be no driver on the Wiz.
The v2 version uses an Atheros AR9002U chipset, for which the Wiz has the driver already installed (ath9k-htc).
The v4 and v5 use a Realtek RTL8192EU and the Wiz has an installed driver for that too.

Well, I bit the bullet, pulled the T3 out of the TV cabinet and tried to do the front panel update online. After a whole lot of stuffing around (and I do mean a lot of stuffing around - jeez I hate configuring networks!), I finally managed to get the T3 to share my PC's internet connection and was eventually able to do the upgrade.

The result? Success!!!

The T3 no longer powers up whenever I press a button on any of the 1,000 remote controls I have in the lounge, and (thankfully!) the T3 recognises the hard drive without the need to restart the GUI/reboot.

Thanks heaps Grumpy_Geoff and peteru for all of your help!
