T4 startup hanging?

Post by j s » Thu Feb 20, 2020 10:18

After a power glitch that caused a circuit breaker to trip my T4 is hanging on startup.

The sequence I see is...

Turn on power
Front panel displays "Booting"
Front panel displays "Loading xx%" and WizOS start screen displays on TV
At "Loading 49%" front panel goes blank as does WizOS start screen briefly
WizOS start screen returns, front panel remains blank
Icon on start screen spins but over time gets slower, at times virtually stops
After 60 mins+ still spinning slowly.

Firmware is (I think) 16.1

Is this likely to be a hardware issue or firmware? I don't want to try a firmware upgrade if it will make it worse.
Could it a HDD issue? (The 2TB Seagate drive was installed in 2015).

Obviously the 49% is a significant point in the startup which will help the gurus. :)

49% is where the operating system and enigma2 platform start booting up.

This might be a case of filesystem corruption on the internal flash memory.
Perfect opportunity for you to install a fresh copy of firmware, and upgrade to the 19.3 series :).
This will format the flash and install everything fresh.

That's what I suspected/hoped. Cheaper than a hardware failure.

The operating system is booting from Booting... up to 49%. From 50% to running, the enigma2 platform is starting.

But you are likely correct about it being a munged firmware filesystem.

Similar thing with my T4 a while back. Came good after reflashing the firmware.

I've had my T4 become stuck on booting a few times in the past. A USB reflash has fixed it each time. It's possible the power glitch caused a bitflip in the flashmem in a Bad Place.

Once or twice, I might call bad luck. More than twice, I'd start thinking "power supply issues".

The "doc" told me the tuner regulator "issue" can sometimes cause flash issues on the T4. My old (now swapped out) unit would sometimes fail to start enigma2, but after reflashing it was fine.

I can confirm that re-flashing the firmware fixed the problem. Because I already had it ready on a USB stick I stayed with 16.1 for the moment so could keep all my settings.

I have downloaded 19.3 and will get around to doing that when I have time.

Thank you everyone.

Does anything happen when you try to turn it on? Power LED changes, front panel changes, TV screen changes?

Perhaps too obvious, but in any case I don't mind sounding like an idiot; is the rear power switch in the "on" position?
