U4 no sound on reboot and with 4K upscale

Post by dugby » Fri Jan 31, 2020 14:04

Hi.
I am a newby Wiz, though I have been reading the BW forums for 2 years.
I have notice many useful contributions to this user group and am thankful
to all those who participate, which influenced my decision to seek out a U4.

Just bought a refurbed U4 from NASA-Electronics.

Background - Have >25yrs TCP/IP networking skills and 10yrs PVR experience.

I have reviewed the few BW forum appends about "no sound with 4K upscale".

Environment:
My U4 has firmware v19.3 (20191106) installed by NASA.
Using the original BW HDMI cable connected directly to LG 4K OLED 6G (2018) HDTV.
There is no Home Theater receiver in this setup.
Location is PERTH
The FTA signals are quite strong in the >95%, good clear images.
U4 sound setting at maximum.

Problem Description:
After initial setup, there appeared be no sound with default settings. Upon scrolling through the various "TV-Out" options
sound did appear on some "TV-Out" settings.
After multiple power-down and then power-up reboot cycles, a good FTA picture is always visible, but I have reproduced the following-
a) no sound on all FTA channels after reboot until I go through a full cycle of selecting the "TV-out" options.
b) Sound is available only with 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p
c) No sound is available with 480p and 2160p

Not sure if this an issue with v19.3 firmware or have I missed something else.

Kind thanks and regards, Dugby.

You might want to investigate firmware update for your LG. They have been known to have a number of issues with HDMI compatibility.

Do you have Ultra HD Deep Colour enabled on the port that your U4 plugs into?

Thankyou for your response.

I have had the firmware updated twice (over the net) since purchase, and is running on the current latest version.

Thankyou for your response.

I did previously see and followed the advice on the other BW append referring to "HDMI Ultra-HD Deep Colour"

My LG has four HDMI ports. Ports 1 and 2 are configurable for "enabling or disabling" HDMI Ultra-HD Deep Colour.
I have switched between disable and enable and then again disable (each change forces a reboot of the TV).
Ports 3 and 4 are not configurable for "HDMI Ultra-HD Deep Colour".

Might have to try other spec HDMI cables.

That doesn't sound right. The LG OLED range makes a lot of advertising house about all inputs being 4K HDR compatible. You do need something to be plugged into the input to be able to configure it, v and you must be switched to the input to be able to toggle the setting. Or are you saying that the inputs 3 and 4 don't even appear in the Ultra Deep Colour menu at all?

In any case, the note I think about it, it's probably unlikely to be related anyway. You'd likely not be getting sound in the other resolutions of it was the deep colour setting.

Instead of cycling the resolution with the TV Out button, try seeing the resolution manually from the setup menu. Set the frame rate to 50Hz to start with and check your results at the problematic resolutions, then try again at 60Hz. I'm interested to know what happens (60Hz obviously wouldn't be recommended as a permanent solution).

If nothing seems to help, and I know this is a bit of a non-solution too, you might just want to leave the resolution on 1080p. If you don't actually have any 4k content to pay on the U4, there is actually going to be no practical difference between 1080p and 2160p.

I hard coded the resolution in the U4 as per your suggestion, but it resulted is no improvement to the sound issue.

Thankyou for all the responses and advice.

I have now just plugged the U4 into my Samsung T27A950 HDTV, and the U4 is behaving correctly.
Upon U4 power up, sound is immediately available without having to select any "TV-out" modes.
Furthermore sound is now available on all TV-out modes - 480i, 576p, 720p, 1080i,1080p and 2160p.

Seems like my LG OLED65G6T is not behaving nicely with the U4. :x
Oh well at least I can get 1080p sound working with the LG G6T :D

Slightly disappointed with such an expensive OLED LG, but very happy with probably one of the last U4 :D

I have the previous year's LG OLED and have had my share of HDMI Tribble as well, though the worst of them have been taken care of in firmware updates.

I haven't had this sound issue, but the big difference here is that I run my connection through a receiver first which more than likely plays a lot better with the TV's quirks (and takes care of the sound itself).

Hi MrQuade,

What is wrong with Tribbles? They a small, cute and cuddly. Yes they reproduce at an amazing rate but hey, each to their own. I don't know about the relevance of StarTrek Tribbles in this context though.

Regards,
Ian.

Just reviewed the fine print in Australian LG OLED65G6T product specifications PDF, the 4 ports are specified as :

2 ports HDMI 2.0a
2 ports HDMI 2.0

HDMI ports support HDCP 2.2 and 60fps @ 2160p.

Finally nailed the misbehaving component in the above problem- old HDMI v1.4 cables are the culprit

Just upgraded to the Belkin 4K HDMI cables purchased from the Apple store with an Apple 4K TV.

Now the U4 is behaving correctly with my LG OLED65G6T

Upon U4 power up, sound is immediately available without having to select any "TV-out" modes.

Well played, Sir.

You often hear that a HDMI cable is a HDMI cable and you will be fine. Maybe so in most cases, but it's still a worthwhile exercise to try swapping cables when things are misbehaving.

I had a recent experience in the last couple of weeks where I could not get a V2 to work with a HDMI cable that has been fine with a T4. Swapped the HDMI cable and it's all good. In this case I replaced a newer, shorter, but cheaper looking cable with an older cable that looked more heavy duty.
