I've found that subtitles default On for non-tv files with subtitles (e.g. mkv, mp4), not off-air recordings. That was the case also for the 17.5 series f/w too. I can't seem to find where to turn the default to Off either.

Is there a subtitle settings page for non-off-air files to change various default parameters (fonts/position/etc.)? I seem to recall finding such a page when playing a file with subtitles and long-pressing the Subtitle key, and from there accessing a subtitles settings page, but I can't seem to find that at the moment...

Edit: I guess forced subtitles, if they exist, should be enabled by default in any case.

Setup > TV > Subtitle settings > Automatically turn on external subtitles (use UP, it's third last).

You may have missed it because it's not on the first page of options. It's odd that it defaults to on. That's not what I would have chosen.

My wife asked why the subtitles could not default to always on and came across this thread.

I have a T2 and tried looking in location mentioned but didn't see this option there. Are some options different on models?

No, all the non-hardware related differences should be the same.

MENU->Setup->TV->Subtitle settings->Automatically turn on external subtitles

Did you remember to scroll down to the second page of settings under "Subtitle settings"?

Are you running the 19.3 series firmware?

I did scroll down to 2nd page but all options are for external subtitles, and they are already on. I wanted to turn the internal ones automatically which I assume would be for the programs recorded by the T2,

That's the option that is being talked about in this thread. If you were expecting to find another option, then no, there isn't one like that.

As far as I remember (as a non-user of subtitles), the subtitle on/off state is remembered on a per-service basis. The recordings are supposed to inherit that subtitle on/off state from the service if I recall correctly. Maybe that features is not working now?

Yes Gunga Din, that is my recollection too - state is on a per service basis, which I think is recorded against the service in lamedb and lamedb5.
The recordings from the service inherit this setting at the time of recording.
