Low Wireless Network Transfer Speed

Post by Mr Electrickery » Sat Oct 26, 2019 13:13

Hi,
I am having problems transferring data from U4 to my PC over wireless network using FileZilla. I transfer 2 files at a time and until recently the combined speed would be at least 3GB/S, now its approx. 700 KB/s. to my knowledge nothing has changed except the addition of a Logitech 350 remote which I cant see having any effect on system.
I tried factory reset and just setting up the dongle to see if was a setting that somehow got changed but no change.

I am not sure what other information you will require but I will do best to answer any questions
Thank you

BTW: "B" is the forum convention for bytes, "b" for bits.

If you're really getting 3GB/s (24Gb/s) over WiFi, how can I get it? :D

Also, a bit more obscurely, "K" is the SI unit for thermodynamic temperature, the kelvin, and "S" is for the SI unit of electrical conductance, the siemens. "k" for the 1000 multiplier, and "s" for seconds.

Hi well I did make a mistake, It should have been Megs instead of Gigs. and the capitol B I got from FileZilla. see snipping tool paste
I am sorry if I made a mistake.

In FileZilla, "B" is byte.

Can anybody give me an idea of speeds I should be getting?

Every wireless environment is different.
Make/model of wireless adapter? USB2.0 or USB 3.0 port?
Make/model of router/wireless access point? What wireless frequency is being used (if dual-band adapter), channel width too?
U4 firmware version?
Are you using the SFTP protocol with FileZilla? I found that it was much slower (may be around 6-7 times slower).
What speeds do you get by using Windows File Explorer to copy a file?

Quick test U4 USB 3.0 WiFi > Android Tablet. 5 GHz, 433Mbps link speed, according to tablet.

Varied b/n 3.6 - 5.0 MB/s

Not at home, so can't use Filezilla.

A few tests -

Source - U4 using 2.4GHz wireless adapter / 8812bu chipset / USB3.0 ($15 eBay cheapie)
Connected to access point using 20MHz channel / not much access point activity at the time / ethernet backhaul to router
U4 in standby / little other U4 disk activity
Target - PC on ethernet / FTP protocol using FileZilla
Achieved 6.1 MiB/s average throughput.
Status: File transfer successful, transferred 2,806,740,548 bytes in 444 seconds
I didn't try this one on the 5GHz band.

Swapped U4 to use TP-Link T4U v2 / 2.4GHz / same AP
Achieved 8.2 MiB/s average throughput.
Status: File transfer successful, transferred 2,806,740,548 bytes in 330 seconds

Swapped that adapter over to 5GHz band / same AP
Achieved 27.5 MiB/s
Status: File transfer successful, transferred 2,806,740,548 bytes in 99 seconds
Repeated same transfer - 26.6 MiB/s
Status: File transfer successful, transferred 2,806,740,548 bytes in 101 seconds

I use wired Ethernet for everything except my phone. And I don't usually copy files from the Beyonwizes using FileZilla. I generally use ssh for terminal connections and scp for copies, because they have more convenient access control and scp can be used in shell scripts.

Scp is probably slower than FileZilla, because of the cost of encrypting the link. But I'm usually copying kbytes worth of Python code rather than Gbytes of recordings, so convenience outweighs copy speed.

I get highly variable WiFi connection speeds depending where in the house I am.

In WiFi infrastructure mode, it's normal to expect actual transfer rates less (often much less) than half the connection speed. MIMO can potentially do better, depending where the two ends of the connection are.

Hi Grumpy Geoff, There's a great deal of what you said I did not understand but Ill get to that later. My dongle I bought from Beyonwiz. It appears to be USB 2 and I had it plugged in front port and before I knew it was probably USB 2 I tried it on rear USB3 port which I couldn't get going and now I can not get the front port going either. so can you help getting port going again as it sucks not having coms at all. can you recommend a particular USB3 dongle because if I can get near the speeds you got in tests that would be cool.
thanks for every body's help

Just checking - did you reboot the box each time you swapped the adapter? If not, try it after a reboot.

Thanks Paul, will check that, Just to be clear you mean unplug dongle and then reboot right. After which set up again. I am using the auto set method and when I test network I am getting red crosses in particular next to network connection.( see photo, sorry its so blurry I have an essential tremor)

I'm sure Paul means reboot with the dongle connected.

What do you mean by that, do you mean the 'Automatic configuration (DHCP)' setting for the adapter in the Network wizard?

Hi yes I meant 'Automatic configuration (DHCP)' setting for the adapter in the Network wizard. sorry I am having problems uploading photo so I will investigate.
Can you also tell me how you do the quotes from my text. I am sure I have seen it before but can not see it at the moment
cheers

To quote a post in a reply, click in the double quotes icon at the top right of the post. Edit out any irrelevant parts, being careful not to chanke any of the

markup.

You can split a quote up by copying the markup lines and putting different parts of the quote in separate quote items and reply to each individually.

It's also possible to quote multiple posts in the same reply, though it's a bit awkward to do it.

If you just want to quote something that has hasn't been posted before, just use unadorned quotes that you can create with the quote button in the posting page. You can also put in an author attribution, if you want:

Yes indeed. If you insert a wifi dongle you need to reboot the wiz or it is ignored.

This means there was no wifi dongle detected. It should turn Green after a reboot.

Hi Paul and others that helped,
Thanks for all your help, I had trouble still getting it to go on Wi Fi so I decided to try ethernet and it was so much easier and much faster so I went with that. Then of course I was able to get Wi Fi to work and at the moment It seems I can select which adapter to use as long as try to connect to correct Ip address. Still some unknowns in this subject for me but at least its going for now.
Cheers all Thanks for help
