Recording the same program twice!

Post by hugson » Fri Oct 11, 2019 13:19

For Channels 7 and 9 I can access either Sydney or Central Coast services. Sometimes one service works well while the other may be pixellated, and vice versa. I'd therefore like to have autotimers for programs from channels 7 or 9 record from both services (i.e. Sydney AND Central Coast). Unforunately, autotimers appear, in the main, to record a qualifying program from EITHER Sydney OR Central Coast, but not both. The only exception I have seen was when the Central Coast version started 1 minute later.
I have experimented with filters, channel inclusions, etc. but to no avail.
Is what I am trying to achieve possible or not?

I recommend building your Favourites bouquet, with only 1 of each service. You can then specify this bouquet when you create the Autotimer. The Autotimer should then ignore the service which is not included in the bouquet.

I think that's the opposite of what hugson wants to achieve. His reception on of Nine & Seven from both Sydney & Central Coast seems to be unreliable, so he wants to record Nine and Seven programs from both Sydney & Central Coast, in the hope that the signal propagation gods will smile on at least one of the recordings.

I'm not sure how to so that, but I think that it can be done. Grumpy_Geoff or one of the other AutoTimer expert users may need to step in here.

You rang?

If one is on a recent 19.3-series beta, then there's an AutoTimer setting to facilitate duplicate timers. I've not tried it though.
At_double_allowed.png

Otherwise for older firmware, create two AutoTimer definitions for the desired program -
  • for one of them, don't enable 'Custom offset' so it will get your standard pre/post-padding values
    For the other one, enable 'Custom offset' and set either one or both of 'Offset before recording' or 'Offset after recording' values so it has at least one different value than your corresponding standard padding value (one or two mins will do).
  • either set each definition on the desired service, or set each definition to use your (Favourites) bouquet that only has one of each simulcasted service per broadcast location, e.g.
    7HD Sydney and 7HD Central Coast (but not 7 Sydney nor 7 Central Coast)
    7mate Sydney and 7mate Central Coast

Thank you for your suggestion. I did wonder if forcing a change on one of the recordings would achieve my aim. I'll try this tomorrow.

I thought I'd be notified by email automatically about responses to my topics, but I must have missed the right setting.

Well, it worked, but only partially!

This is what I did:
- I have a favourites bouquet which includes 9HD Central Coast, 9Go Central Coast, 9Gem Central Coast. It also contains ABCHD, ABC2, 7HD Central Coast, 7TWO Central Coast, 7Flix, Ten HD, Ten Peach, 10 Bold, SBS OneHD, SBS Viceland HD, SBS World Movies.
- I have a Sydney bouquet which includes the Sydney version of the 1st 3 channels above. It also contains all 11 of the other channels.
- I create an Autotimer for Law and Order SVU, any day, any time, default padding, both bouquets
- I create a 2nd Autotimer for Law and Order SVU, any day, any time, different padding (by 5 minutes) before and after times, both bouquets

- I get one recording for each episode broadcast on 10HD, 10 Peach, 10 Bold. All good.
- I get two recordings for each of the first two episodes broadcast on 9HD and 9Gem (Sydney and Central Coast). All good.
- But I get only one version of any other episodes on 9HD or 9Gem (3 in total). In some cases it's Central Coast. In others it's Sydney.

Notes:
- I first tried varying the padding by only 1 minute. That did nothing.
- I have also tried specifying the 6 relevant channels - 9HD, 9Go, 9Gem, 10HD, 10 Peach, 10 Bold - in eahc Autotimer. Same result as when using the bouquets.

Then I had a brainwave. Perhaps the missing episodes were dropped because they would exceed the three-channel source limit. But, unfortunately, that's not true for any of the missing episodes.

Perhaps the missing episodes will appear later in the week nearer to the recording day and time?

Can you think of anything else I should try?

Previously, I posted sample AutoTimer definitions and the resultant generated timers and OWIF screenshots, in the AutoTmer FAQ.
AFAIK, raymondjpg still uses this technique as he posted about it this year.

I wonder whether this example is a bit different to mine. Your example is about the same program on 2 ABC channels, one high definition, one standard. Perhaps the IDs of the selected program are necessarily different?
Mine is about exactly the same high definition program on 2 channels from different sources. Perhaps here the IDs may be the same?

I just tested the originally posted scenario and it still works.

Code: Select all

{13610}< 15279.005> [eEPGCache] lookup events with 'House Of Wellness' as title (ignore case)
{13610}< 15279.014> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Try to add new timer based on AutoTimer test - House Of Wellness HD/SD 1.
{13610}< 15279.015> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Timer start on: Sun Oct 13 11:55:40 2019
{13610}< 15279.023> [RecordTimer] Record RecordTimerEntry(name=House Of Wellness, begin=Sun Oct 13 11:55:40 2019, end=Sun Oct 13 13:03:45 2019, serviceref=1:0:19:564:506:1013:EEEE0000:0:0:0:, justplay=0, isAutoTimer=True)
{13610}< 15279.074> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Try to add new timer based on AutoTimer test - House Of Wellness HD/SD 1.
{13610}< 15279.074> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Timer start on: Sun Oct 20 05:00:30 2019
{13610}< 15279.083> [RecordTimer] Record RecordTimerEntry(name=House Of Wellness, begin=Sun Oct 20 05:00:30 2019, end=Sun Oct 20 06:05:00 2019, serviceref=1:0:19:564:506:1013:EEEE0000:0:0:0:, justplay=0, isAutoTimer=True)
{13604}< 15279.620> [eEPGCache] lookup events with 'House Of Wellness' as title (ignore case)
{13604}< 15279.629> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Try to add new timer based on AutoTimer test - House Of Wellness HD/SD 2.
{13604}< 15279.629> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Timer start on: Sun Oct 13 11:55:40 2019
{13604}< 15279.637> [RecordTimer] Record RecordTimerEntry(name=House Of Wellness, begin=Sun Oct 13 11:55:40 2019, end=Sun Oct 13 13:13:45 2019, serviceref=1:0:1:560:506:1013:EEEE0000:0:0:0:, justplay=0, isAutoTimer=True)
{13604}< 15279.670> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Try to add new timer based on AutoTimer test - House Of Wellness HD/SD 2.
{13604}< 15279.670> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Timer start on: Sun Oct 20 05:00:30 2019
{13604}< 15279.679> [RecordTimer] Record RecordTimerEntry(name=House Of Wellness, begin=Sun Oct 20 05:00:30 2019, end=Sun Oct 20 06:15:00 2019, serviceref=1:0:1:560:506:1013:EEEE0000:0:0:0:, justplay=0, isAutoTimer=True)
Try specifying one service per AutoTimer - I think the "random" nature of service/event lookup when bouquets/multiple services are specified may cause events to be missed.

You have a T2 right?
Is it connected to your home network? If not, that's why.

Here is Law and Order SVU using one definition, with 3 services specified, and with the "duplicates allowed" setting enabled for specified services (19.3-series) -

Code: Select all

 <timer name="test - Law And Order SVU duplicates" match="Law And Order SVU" enabled="yes" searchType="exact" overrideAlternatives="1">
  <serviceref>1:0:19:462:460:1012:EEEE0000:0:0:0:</serviceref> <!-- 9HD Perth -->
  <serviceref>1:0:1:461:460:1012:EEEE0000:0:0:0:</serviceref> <!-- Channel 9 Perth -->
  <serviceref>1:0:1:466:460:1012:EEEE0000:0:0:0:</serviceref> <!-- Channel 9 Perth -->
 </timer>
Debug log entries from AutoTimer, showing timers generated for all 3 services -

Code: Select all

{13604}< 21679.091> [eEPGCache] lookup events with 'Law And Order SVU' as title (ignore case)
{13604}< 21679.105> [RecordTimer] [AutoTimer] Try to add new timer based on AutoTimer test - Law And Order SVU duplicates.

An alternative, using one definition, 1 bouquet specified (Terrestrial TV LCN), and with the "duplicates allowed" setting enabled for specified bouquets (19.3-series).
Timers for 9Gem and 9Gem HD are also generated -

What do you see with this OWIF search?

Now that my T2 is switched on (I had turned it off in order to reflash v19.3!), I've attached a text file of what your URL returned.

Taking the example of the "Lowdown" episode, the Central Coast services have EIT 42598 whilst the Sydney services have 42589.
But I don't think this'll make any difference.

Try this -
Enable setting "Allow double timer for different services", setting it to "If specified bouquets".
Create one new bouquet to use in these AutoTimer definitions, populate it with all 17 of your target services.
Alter one of your "Law And Order SVU" AutoTimers to use this new bouquet (no other services nor bouquets). Disable or delete the other.
-Or-
Alter your two "Law And Order SVU" AutoTimers - specify 9HD Central Coast for one, and 9HD Sydney for the other.
Keep the differing pre- and/or post-padding as you'll already have.

I really should have read the OP more closely. :oops:

Enable setting "Allow double timer for different services", setting it to "If specified bouquets".

Is that a setting in the latest public release, or beta firmware?

Version 4.3.2 of the plugin.
Actually your question is already answered in the 2nd paragraph of the 4th post in this topic :lol:

If you want it, you should be able to replace your current version of the plugin with that newer version by performing the below.
Download the plugin using the below links (based on your sig.) in a web browser.
Stick the file(s) on a USB thumb drive.
Insert the drive into the Wiz.
Install the AutoTimer plugin via the "install extensions" popup prompt - selecting the relevant package if there's more than one on the thumb drive.

Thanks for that. I had only read that post, which outlines what I do for duplicate recordings, and hadn't enlarged the graphic showing the new setting. I'll take a look at the possibility of installing Version 4.3.2 of the plugin, but at the moment I'm reasonably happy with setting custom offsets and requiring descriptions to be unique on same service, when limiting duplicate recordings to single channels.
