How to undelete a recording

Post by davidmorr » Tue Jul 09, 2019 23:07

Unlike every other device I have ever used, Beyonwiz U4 does not ask for confirmation before deleting a recording. Just press the red button and it is gone. Even if you pressed it accidentally.

Is there any way to undelete a file that has been deleted?

Is there any way to make it confirm a delete before actually wiping the file?

You can find it in the trash directory in your storage or media root directory. You can undelete the recording from there.

Deleted files will remain there for a configurable number of days before being actually deleted.

You can also have the U4 ask before moving files to trash. Press MENU->Settings

How do I get to Trash?

That is useful to know. It was 8 days.

Excellent, have turned that on. Thnaks

Navigate to the ".." directory until you get to the topmost directory. The Trash directory will be there.

It's usually worth going into MENU->Settings and then setting your "Root directory" to be /media/hdd/movie
That way, the trash folder will be in the movie folder and it makes it harder to accidently navigate off into the yonder reaches of the harddisk accidently.

yep, that's the default. Some other popular choices are 1 and 3.

See how you go with it. Most people find that it is a pain since you can always recover from mistakes from the trash.

Remember too, that you can select multiple files for a mass delete too. (press the HELP button)

Well, I found the Trash directory. Two of them actually, one in the folder containing the recordings, and one in the parent folder of that. Neither had any files in them, even though I deleted two (one accidentally) about an hour ago. And then I went into the movie folder and there was a Trash there too. This did have my deleted files in it though. Curiously, my root folder was still /Media in settings.

Yes, there will usually be one in your movie folder and one in the root. The one that is used will be the one that is "closest" to the files that you deleted.

On my U4, those are the same folder, so I only have the one.

"/Media" and not '/media"? Case is significant in Linux file names.

It's a bit more complicated than that (that's probably the case for any simple statement about Trash). The value of the "Root directory" plays no direct role in where Trash folders are created, but if you never navigate outside the directory subtree under /media/hdd/movie, the trash used when you delete will always be in /media/hdd/movie.

But even if "Root directory" is set to /media/hdd/movie, it's still possible to navigate out of that subtree in the media selection screen by using YELLOW Location. Once you've done that, the Trash location will follow the normal, rather complicated, rules.

Yes, I know. I could not remember which it was.

The system default is /media. There isn't a /Media directory in the factory firmware (but of course it's possible for a user to create one).
