Which NAS Drives are Compatible with a Beyonwiz?
This thread captures the experience others have had with their NAS drives and the Beyonwiz. I update this post as new information is posted in the thread.
When posting your experience, please consider providing the following information.
Please include:
1.) Compatible / Incompatible
2.) Make and Model
3.) Size (GB)
4.) Connection used - USB/ Ethernet include make and model of switch/router
If compatible then also include:
5.) Disk/Fan Noise
6.) Transfer speed (MB/sec) Copy and WizFX.
7.) Ease of set up.
8.) Other features - e.g. Usefulness with other networked computers. Number and size of streams tested. (See prls note www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=51040#51040 )
If incompatible then also include:
9.) Problems experienced.
10.) If you don't want to repost all of your details then it would be useful if you could just drop a post in this thread with Model number and a link to post in other thread where your problem was discussed without success.
Thanks,
DG

The compatibility list generally only lists NAS devices as compatible if they can be seen by and accessed by the wiz. It is recommended that you buy a NAS with at least 500Mhz/128GB RAM. - http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewt ... 0155#60155

Hi DG,
I am happy to start you off:
1. Compatible
2. Infrant ReadyNAS NV+
(Infrant is now owned by Netgear. All the NAS units in the range run the same firmware so all models are equally compatible.)
3. The units support 4 drive slots. Drive sizes can range from, typically, 250 GB up to 750 GB. The 1 TB drives are not yet officially supported but they will be soon.
4. Full duplex gigabit network interface.
5. This unit is not silent but it is quiet enough given that it is not in my home theatre. It sits in my study and competes equaly with all my other gear for noise. There is an almost quite, home theatre component shaped unit called the Repertoire, if this is a requirement.
6. I haven't tested speeds but it is delivering content to my DP-S1 without any issues. I believe tests have the ReadyNAS delivering up to 4 simultaneous HD streams without issue.
7. This unit was a SNAP to setup and worked with the Beyonwiz immediately. Please remember that networking is not the easiest of PC setups and a poorly setup/performing network is not going to suddenly get better just because the Beyonwiz arrives on the scene. Also the Beyonwiz may show up issues in a poorly setup network that have been running OK before the demands of the Beyonwiz. I have a wired gigabit network through the house using a HP gigabit switch. I have no issues. (The Beyonwiz correctly scans my network to the 100% mark and finds all network shares without issue.)
8. The ReadyNAS units have lots of features including RAID redundancy for hard disk failure or X-RAID for online storage expansion and redundancy, general file serving, multiple system compatibility, backup services, etc, etc. Check out the website.
Regards,
Ian.

I was considering the Thecus N4100+
Given the comments about the N2100 above, I presume it would also be compatible. Do you know if the 2 systems operate in the same/similar way?

Sorry but I am confused. The link has nothing to do with a ReadyNAS NV+.Darrylp wrote:Please look at this post of mine and advise me.

Hi Ian
Apologies as my post is confusing but it has to do with passwords for a networked USB or a NAS.
I used the search function on the Forum and this Topic seemed the most related to my problem.
I'm asking how one manages to use a NAS with a password and whether the solution will work with a network attached USB too?
Thanks and regards
Darryl

Hi Darryl,
At the moment for the Beyonwiz to see a network device and its contents you must allow the Beyonwiz to connect to that device as user Guest and the password must be blank. (Guest must also have access to all directories and files that you want to see from the Beyonwiz.)
As Tonymy01 said, this situation will soon be extended/changed to allow allow you to use a different username and password for authentication.

Thats some pretty seriously priced equipment for a home NAS - I'm impressed
My info puts them at about $1300 for a 500GB redundant raid setup. Is that about right?
Phil
Hi Phil,
I assume that you are talking about 2 500GB drives in RAID 1 mode. That price seems a bit low according to some recent prices that I saw. I don't have a price list to hand so I can't be sure.

Ian.
Unfortunately since the Netgear takeover these units have gone up by up to $500DrPhil wrote:Thats some pretty seriously priced equipment for a home NAS - I'm impressed

Just for a benchmark, I paid $1999 for a 1TB (4x disk) model a month or so ago. Bought it from Harris technology and they wouldn't budge on price and I couldn't be bothered shopping around (the old 'had it in my hot little hand syndrome).
If anyone did better or gets better, I will just go "La la la la" and ignore you!

I think if you're going to spend the dosh on a proper NAS (Infrant of Buffalo) you may as well get the benefit of a RAID 5 setup and populate all 4 drive bays. That way any one drive can die and you can hot swap it for a new one without loosing any of your data. You can even upgrade the total capacity of the system by putting 4 higer capacity drives in one by one without having to take the data off first. The system will gradually build itself up and once the last drive has been added, it will give access to the new total capacity (total capacity is 3 times the lowest capacity drive).DrPhil wrote:Bit lowIanSav wrote:Hi Phil,

Me thinks I will be going with the ebay special

La la la here we go . Just saw in add in the latest APC for a Buffalo TeraStation Pro 2TB for $1199 (1.5TB useable if in RAID 5 mode). No prrint server USB port and confusing SW so they say. I have an Infrant Reday NV+ (before Netgear got their clutches into Infrant), and yep, I certainly paid more for just 1TB.SimonB wrote:Just for a benchmark, I paid $1999 for a 1TB (4x disk) model a month or so ago. OK. I've purchased a Nexstar LX ethernet NAS that has a reasonably primitive interface. It's attached to my Dynalink wireless router by wired ethernet. The link is here;
http://www.vantecusa.com/products/nexst ... 375lx.html
$95 plus the cost of a IDE HDD
Now this works a treat with my wireless networked XP and Vista PCs, allowing all the various file exchanges etc. However the BW will 'see' its network label, and also see the SMB folder generated through its interface, but refuses to see anything else including files within that folder. Any files or folders generated through windows will be seen by the other windows machine (which makes it a cheap file storage server) but not by the BW. Before I move on I should present my personal attributes.
Network Mastery 6 out of 10 (amongst this lot of braniacs anyway. I'm a legend with the geriatrics of my family. )
Willingness to learn 9 out of 10
Refusal to pay even more money for a NAS 7 out of 10
BW love 8 out of 10
I've spent far too long on getting this thing to see more than just the NAS. The new Windows sharing features appear not to assist. Again I stress that the file movement between the Windows machines and the BW has been straightforward.
So the question is,
1. What might I be doing wrong/possible options.
2. Are there some NASs that simply won't work?
3. If yes to above, what's the cheapest way to get into a NAS that will?

WIth windows, there are 2 permissions to setup for a share.
1. share access permissions
2. local access security permissions
one is setup under sharing, one is setup under security.
If you don't have "guest" or "everyone" setup to "list folder contents" (and you will need to also setup "read & execute" or perhaps just "read") for the security permissions (2) then the issue you describe is going to happen.

2) Western Digital WD-Netcenter
If compatible then also
3) 500 (GB)
4) Connection used - Ethernet Dlink 502T Router, several cheapo switches
5) Disk/Fan Noise: Not relevant - it's in a cupboard near the router
6) Transfer speed (MB/sec) - haven't measured yet to BW but speed to PC's is excellent
7) ease of set up. - no issues
Cool Other features - SMB only but does offer a Print Server. USB ports for additonal drives
1) Compatible
2) LaCie Ethernet Big Disk
If compatible then also
3) 1000 (GB)
4) Connection used - Ethernet Dlink 502T Router, several cheapo switches

6) Transfer speed (MB/sec) - 2.45GB pushed from P1 to LaCie took 35 minutes. The tvwiz file then played back correctly.
7) ease of set up. - no issues but interface a bit slow
Cool Other features - e.g. SMB/FTP/HTTP/Appletalk/Bonjourno. Allegedly also a Media Server but I can't get this to work. Don't need it anyway. USB ports for additonal drives

These are set up on both machines as you've described, but the NAS's interface is not able to apply such permissions and remote requests via ethernet are denied by the NAS...tonymy01 wrote: If you don't have "guest" or "everyone" setup to "list folder contents" (and you will need to also setup "read & execute" or perhaps just "read") for the security permissions (2) then the issue you describe is going to happen.

Ian, you're a gem. I'm not sure how you'll go finding the manual, although I've noticed that other HDD enclosure manufacturers use this 'generic' interface. Laser for example, though the manual doesn't appear on their Aus website. Nonetheless, thanks in advance for your efforts.IanSav wrote:Hi NPR,

Push transfer from a P1 direct to the LaCie : 2.45GB in 35 minutes
(just tried it this afternoon - set up a "wiz" uid with write access and defined that to the P1)
The recording also played back from the NAS server without any glitches

Hi Nick,
According to the manual (Page 12 - Section 5.2 SMB Server) it looks like you need to create a directory, move it to the right to make it a share, and then assign it a password to make it writable. "If you wish, passwords can be assigned to directories to establish privileged access."
Did you do this?
I assume the username is the share name and the password is the password of the share.
What happens if you try this?
Regards,
Ian.

Unfortunately I've already done this, but I will try again. I'll respond tomorrow as I'm settling down for the evening to actually use the BW for what it's intended for, not as a means to angina/headache. Thanks again for your efforts Ian. Cheers.IanSav wrote:Hi Nick,

A question I haven't seen answered but maybe I missed it....did you define this username and password to the BW in the new "Windows Sharing" setup?NPR wrote:Unfortunately I've already done this, but I will try again. Until the latest firmware the BW relied on Guest access (read only) but now can use the defined username and pw to get read/write access. If the username/pw is not set then the BW reverts to read only Guest access.
To answer both yourself and Ian, setting up Windows Sharing allows the BW to see the SMB created folder if a password is created in the NAS interface, but still fails to 'see' (ie hides) the files and folders accessible via the Windows machine. For some reason, the BW simply does not see the contained files and folders, before and after the intro of Windows sharing. I've even tried to shange permissions via Linux to no avail.j s wrote:A question I haven't seen answered but maybe I missed it....did you define this username and password to the BW in the new "Windows Sharing" setup?NPR wrote:Unfortunately I've already done this, but I will try again. D-Link DNS-323
Hopefully this is in the right thread, can anyone confirm compatibility with the DNS-323 and the BW DP-S1, especially since the latest firmware was released this month, along with WizFX app?
Also looking for advice as to the noise factor of the D-Link, is it acceptably low enough to sit in the same area as the DP-S1 and TV?
Cheers and TIA

This may be out-of-scope for this thread, but does the NSLU2 count as a NAS "device" - given that it still needs a HDD device attached to its USB ports.....is the desired compatibility a function of the HDD/case combination, or with the NLSU2 doing the "negotiation" doesn't it matter?

I have finished setting up my FreeNAS box and can confirm that it is compatible with the BW S1.
I can see all share points and have copied a recording directly from the BW at about 12 Mbps (with no TV showing - ie staying in file mode).
I then streamed back the same recording and it worked well.
For those that are interested the brand new box (1.6 Duo, 1GB RAM, Motherboard, Case and 500GB HDD) cost $500 exactly. About 4 Hrs spent setting up FreeNAS on a 1GB USB Memory stick.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Teddles,
I have a CoolerMaster X-Craft enclosure (it is USB and eSATA enabled) and I chose to put a 500GB Seagate server grade drive in it.
I believe that the latest generation of these enclosures can take a 750GB drive (and possibly bigger). I haven't tried anything larger than 500GB on my DP-S1.
Regards,
Ian.
