Wifi Dongle

Post by purplepanda » Thu Jul 10, 2014 13:15

I know I am ignorant, but I am trying really hard to do my research!! I just looked at the post under wireless keyboards, and found some sort of information about the wifi dongle. But, to be honest, I can't understand if it is saying that the T3 comes equipped with wireless capability, or you actually need to purchase a separate wifi dongle...

Thanks

You need a separate one. Also sold in the Beyonwiz shop but I believe other brands may also work.

To expand on the above a little...

The wireless keyboard comes with a USB dongle to allow the keyboard to communicate with the T3. Thus, a wireless link is established between the keyboard and the USB dongle; the keyboard then appears to the T3 as a regular USB attached keyboard.

This wireless dongle for the keyboard does not provide WiFi connectivity for the T3.

Beyonwiz do sell, separately, a WiFi dongle which will allow you to connect the T3 to your WiFi network.

The T3 on its own does not have any built in WiFi capability.

The T3 does not have any WiFi hardware installed on the motherboard. However, the T3 has, as standard, pre-installed drivers to support many USB wireless adapters. That means that in many instances you can just plug in a device without having to install any additional software.

Thanks for the info.

Another question. Does anyone use a different wifi dongle than the one supplied by Beyonwiz? If so, what do you find is compatible and works well? Or is it just better to pay the extra and get the one from Beyonwiz?

I have been experimenting with a few wifi usb sticks and can report that I have been able to get ones with the Realtek 8188CU chipset to work. But many wifi usb sticks appear to come with 8192C or 8192EU and I have not been able to get these to work.

The T3 plugins come with a driver for 8192CU but not 8192C or EU. Does anyone if these exist and where to find them?

The following drivers come pre-installed as standard in the firmware:

Code: Select all

enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-zd1211rw
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rtl8187
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-r8712u
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt2500
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt73
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rtl8192cu
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt2800
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-carl9170
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-ath9k-htc
These additional drivers are also available for installation via the standard feed:

Code: Select all

enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-asix
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-ax88179-178a
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-mt7601u
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-r8723a
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt3070
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt3573
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt5572
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rt8723bs
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-rtl8812au
enigma2-plugin-drivers-network-usb-smsc75xx
Anything not covered above will require that you build your own drivers. You can not download drivers for other boxes, they will not work. Drivers have to be built against the right kernel.

Hi all,

Anyone had any luck with Broadcom chipsets, such as in the Asus USB-AC53?
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_USB-AC53

Does the T3 even allow something in the 5GHz band or does it only pick up in the 2.4 GHz band? Would seem a waste picking up a dual band 5GHz capable dongle if the T3 only works in the 2.4GHz band anyway.

Regards
Rob

The T3 doesn't care at all about the frequency you use.

I'm trying to find the cheapest usb wifi adapter for my u4 and get it from msy.
( I'll be using my phone for wifi hotspot u4 updates so don't care about speed or distance )
Is there an updated list of u4 preinstalled drivers over the list posted above for
17.5 20171230 usb version ?

The U4 20180202 firmware now lists all available USB network drivers as pre-installed. Some of them don't seem to be WiFi, though (the ASIX and SMSC devices, for example). However, you need to know the device chipset for this information to help:

Just bought the D-Link nano DWA-131 wifi dongle but it doesn't work.
It has the RTL8192EU chipset but I think the firmware is too new -
HW version : E1
Firmware version : 5.02

You will need to install the RTL8192EU drivers. The 8192CU are part of the standard distro the EU are not.

Thanks to everyone for their help but it looks like I have gone around in a circle.
I was trying to get the wifi dongle to work through my phone to update the U4 to get it to wakeup for recordings but it sounds like only the newer firmware has the driver.
I don't have broadband or a computer at home so I'll just patiently wait for the eventual usb release.

Ok - now I'm confused.
I've already got 17.5 20171230 but can't workout what's happening ( tried fresh install as well ).
I assume you plug in the dongle and then reboot the u4.
When I go to setup/network/network adapter settings - should there be a choice for WLAN ?
All it says is network: LAN connention.
Doesn't that mean the dongle is not recognised
ie. no compatible drivers ?

Next issue now is after loading the fresh firmware the fan high pitch buzz has come back.
The fan speed is a lot lower than it used to be.
When booting up the fan speed used to increase and the buzzing noise would go away after about 10 sec.

That would be expected if you have installed the 20171230 firmware and not performed an online update.

The fan noise patch came out on January 24 in the beta feed and was then rolled into the general online update feed the following week.

Just got a laptop now to help and the wifi dongle works on it.
Tried doing a lan connection straight to laptop but couldn't work out how to get a valid IP address or Nameserver.
(I got the first 3 settings with a green tick and internet connection sharing was on)

So, if you plug a flash/portable hard drive into the same U4 USB port you used for the WiFi dongle does the new device work?

The usb works fine on the U4.
I wanted to try the offline upgrade as I thought it was pretty straight forward but cannot work out how to install curl on windows 7 64bit.
Also has anyone got a phone wifi through a laptop then LAN to U4 to work. It can't get the IP address and when I try the phone internet stops until I disable the LAN. ( Also have same problem through a router )

Okay, so if the WiFi adapter works in other devices, and the USB port on the U4 works, what does that leave - the driver for the RTL8192EU is fubared on a U4?

Doesn't Google know how to "install curl on windows 7 64 bit"?

Ok after 3 hours more Google is my best friend now.
I've finally got curl working and just upgraded 125 packages on the u4.
It was pretty easy once you work out which of the 76 downloads actually have the .exe file for your system.
For anyone interested in doing the upgrade over offline usb I would recommend not to read the instructions on the curl site at all.
All you have to do is get the curl.exe and cacert.pem then rename to curl-ca-bundle.crt and edit the computer system variable.
Thanks to everyone once again for the help. :D
( wifi adapter still not working but I don't need it anymore )
