USB power control - power down usb in standby?

Post by steveb » Sun Jan 29, 2023 11:35

I have a T4 with a USB powered fan to try and keep it cooler (runs hot otherwise). It used to power down the USB ports in standby but now (after having a hard disk fail, factory resetting and doing a firmware update to 19.3_20211010) seems to keep them continually powered. Am I missing something somewhere? Is there a way of making the USB ports power down when in standby?

Do actually you want to do that? The T4 uses a significant portion of its fully operating mode power when it's in standby. Everything is still running in standby, except that A/V output is shut down, and the HDD is allowed to spin down if it's not active.

I don't recall my T4 ever shutting down the USB fan in standby and I don't see why it would. Perhaps you were using deep standby.

Yes, sorry should have been more specific - deep standby. But even when in deep standby it appears to have the USB ports powered now.

I try to minimise power consumption as much as possible. My machine seems to run quite hot (may be the new hard drive even though its a WD green) and I have a fan in the cabinet that was powered off the USB port to provide extra air flow over the case and only active when the T4 was not in deep standby.

Ahah, my fan stops in deep standby, connected to the rear USB port. I'm on the 19.3_20211010 firmware.

The heat in mine is from the tuner area and my HDD is a WD Blue.

I think I may have solved it. Not 100% sure but after playing around with redoing firmware, factory resetting etc I think the culprit may have been wake-on-lan. I had enabled it last time I set up and I suspect it may have resulted in something strange like the box being active without firing up the built in fan or the front panel. It was running hot even when in apparent deep standby (I had to actually switch the power off at the back!).

I have now disabled wake-on-lan and now the usb ports drop power when in deep standby (so my cabinet fan fires up and shuts down with the T4) and I think (still watching) the box is running cool in deep standby/shutdown. Fingers crossed :-)

Yes, WoL stops the T4 from fully shutting down.

For lots more discussion search the forum for "wol shutdown".
