T-3 Remote on T4

Post by RodP » Thu Oct 13, 2022 12:01

Hi,

I just purchased a replacement remote for my T4 however the only one available was the T-3 which should work on all devices. The issue is the old remote packed it in and therefore the arrow buttons won't work on the remote to go to setup to change the remotes over.

So what method can I use to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Use the virtual remote on Openwebif to complete the setup and change the remote setting to "All supported" if a T3 or T4. Later models will need to be set to "T3". All should be good then.

You need to connect the Beyonwiz box by ethernet cable to a network first. Then, open a browser on a PC, laptop, phone or tablet on the same network.

For a T4 type "BeyonwizT4" into the address bar and press enter. (U4 it's BeyonwizU4, etc.). Don't use quotes.

If all is well, Openwebif will appear. Use the remote at the left of screen to complete the setup. To see the Beyonwiz output, tick the screen shot box. Also set the update box under the picture on the right to automatically update. I use 3 seconds.

Go to Menu/Setup/System/Remote Control settings and select "All supported". Save your settings. Job done.

Unless there's a very good reason not to, change the remote codes setting to "All supported" rather than to a specific remote. That will stop the problem happening again if you ever need to use a different model's compatible remote.

If your T4 can't be readily networked, it is possible to reset the remote setting to "All supported" without using Open Webif, but it requires you to re-do all your settings, and re-create all your recording timers and AutoTimers (except for timers set by IceTV, if you use it).

Indeed, I'll amend my post. The post was copied from a U4 post, which doesn't have all supported.

It's possible, but things get complicated if your T4 is not already locally configured with a static IP address.

Normally, a networked device needs to get an IP address from a DHCP server (normally your internet router). You can configure a device with its own IP address, independent of a DHCP server, but you need to have done that when you had control of the T4.

You can actually set up your laptop to act as a kind of DHCP server by configuring it for Internet Connection sharing (assuming you are running Windows).
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... ac86d98fb9

That way, the laptop is using its WiFi to connect to the Internet, and it will act as a gateway for your T4 which is connected via Ethernet.

In theory, that should ensure your laptop and T4 have an IP in the same subnet, so they can talk to eachother over the cable.

If possible, you can just unplug the T4, and move it to somewhere where you can plug it directly into your Internet router (if you have one). That way, your T4 will get a normal address on your network, and the laptop can then talk to it. The T4 doesn't need to be hooked up to a TV or antenna for the Web Interface to function.

A +1 from me for that suggestion. The default Beyonwiz network config should make that ethernet connection "just work".

So far no luck as the T4 is not recognised on the network. It connects correctly however I am unable to browse to it.

In a browser, open this URL - http://beyonwizt4/
If that fails, lookup the T4's IP address in your router and use that instead, e.g. http://192.168.1.25/

No browser access and no IP address showing up.

No idea now how to see it on the network. None of the usual stuff identifies it. 25+ years in IT and over 20 in IT / Cyber Security on Windows servers and Apps is not helping me at all for what should be a simple connection. Damn.

By any chance do you have access to an Android phone with an IR blaster?

There's an app in the playstore called irplus that can control Beyonwiz T4s.

F!!!@#$*&^%$ remotes.

After Gurmpy_Geoff and MrQuade's advice I tried heaps and then unplugged it completely and connected via ethernet cable directly to my router. Nada. In desperation I put back onto the TV and found the date had been reset to 1970. Tried the dud remote and it worked just enough to change the handset to the T3 and then karked it again. At least it works however there is no option to set it to accept all remotes.

At least now I can work on it to see why no IP Address was available.

And thanks Paul I knew there had to be some app to control it via my mobile.

One of the remote options is labelled "All supported". That's the one you want, unless you are experiencing remote control interference from another device.

Only the U4 and V2 should lack that option.

Scrolling through the Remote choices there is no All Supported. You have T2/T4, U2/T2/T4, T3 etc but no All Supported in the menu I have on my T4. I also found no mention of it in the T4 user manual.

That's very odd for a T4. I just double checked on my T2 and T3, and the option is there. I don't recall the T4 being any different (unfortunately my T4 is out for the count atm).

I wonder if it has anything to do with the O/S as mine does not have that setting under Remotes.

Wonder what is the latest version of software. My T4 is only a couple of years old.

My T4 offers (in order) "All supported", "Beyonwiz T3 (0xABCD)", "Beyonwiz (0x02F2)", "Beyonwiz (0x02F3)", "Beyonwiz (0x02F4)", "Beyonwiz U4 (0xAE97)", "HDx (0x0933)".

A U4 will offer "Beyonwiz U4 (0xAE97)", "Beyonwiz U4/T4/T2 (0x02F3)", "Beyonwiz T2/T4 (0x02F2)", "Beyonwiz T2/T4 (0x02F4)", "Beyonwiz T3 (0xABCD)".

The T2 and T3 will offer the same choices as the T4. A V2 can't change its codeset (but the V2 and U4 remotes emit the same codes).

So I guess RodP has a U4, not a T4.

In which case, set the remote code to "Beyonwiz T3 (0xABCD)" to work with a T3 remote.

I brought a T4 as far as I am aware. If however the inner m/b etc are for a U4 then I would actually not be happy.

Are the U4 and T4 that much different as it is possible they installed the U4 software onto my T4. Now how the hell do I find out which it is.... Looking in settings etc will be the probable answer.

A U4 has 3 internal tuners and can add a 4th with a USB tuner. The T4 has 4 internal tuners which cannot be expanded.
You can check by going to MENU->Information->About

It's in the top line.

Also check the "Build" number. That should be "20211010". If it is not, it means that your firmware is out of date.

However, as encountered by another user very recently, upgrading firmware from USB with a non-original remote can prove tricky with a U4, since it only responds to its own remote by default.

Looks like I ordered a T4 but got the U4 instead. Hopefully I didn't pay any more for it.

I will have to check what firmware it is.

The T4 and U4 have completely different CPU architectures (MIPS vs ARM). Firmware for the T4 can be pretty much guaranteed not to run on a U4.

The T4 has an OLED front panel capable of displaying graphics and multiple lines of text, while a U4 will have a single line of text and fixed icons that can only be be switched on and off (and a spinning disk activity indicator). A T4 will have an internal power supply; the U4 will have a power brick.

Also, the model should be identified in MENU>Information>About>Model (top line of the screen), but that's the model that the firmware is for, it doesn't look at the hardware itself. In MENU>Information>Devices, the U4 should list 3 tuners (and a different tuner type for the 4th if you've added a USB tuner) and the T4 should list 4 tuners, all the same type.

How wide is the front of your PVR? If it's a T4 case, it should be 38cm wide; if it's a U4 case it should be 26cm wide.

Apart from the more limited front panel display and having 3 internal tuners rather than the T4's 4, the U4 is probably better than the T4 in pretty much every other respect.

Definitely the U4 although at the time I purchased it I wanted the T4. Probably where the confusion came into as I always thought it was a T4.

Thanks for your help.

It occurs to me that if you were typing in "BeyonwizT4" for a U4 then that's probably what went wrong. However, if it's working all is well. Next time we'll know to use BeyonwizU4.
