PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
I was wondering if it would suck too much power. I was going to use the usb2 port to power a ugreen 4-port usb3hub plugged into the usb3 port. (The usb hub has an microusb b plug for extra power.)
I am assuming the usb2 plug can’t draw more power, but I just want to be safe. Also is it safe enough to use both the usb3 and usb2 ports for the hub?

Re: PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
I tested the PlayTV on my pc usb3 with the hub and usbdeview says it uses 500mA. I assume that would max out a usb2 port, but probably good to go into usb3. Can probably get away with using another port for a ssd that uses 2.58W max and occasionally swapping another drive in and out as 1400mA will be available.
Re: PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
Not a lot of point in that as the USB2 port can't supply as much power as the USB3 port can.Blot wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 23:34I was wondering if it would suck too much power. If anything, you'd be better off using the USB3 port for power, but then that's a bit of a waste of the port.
I don't recommend this double port arrangement though. If you think you need the extra power, then I highly recommend you use a separate power brick for the USB hub.

Re: PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
A hub that doesn't have a separate power supply can only supply what the hosts's USB port can supply, less the power that the hub uses for its own requirements. Typically, a USB hub will allocate 100mA for its own use, and if you plug it into a USB port that can only supply 500mA, then the hub can only supply up to a total of 400mA to devices attached to its ports. It is this one…

I might get a longer micro usb type b cable as the two I have are only 10cm long from my bike light chargers. Then I will get the full 2amps extra across the usb3 ports. I was tempted to use the usb2 port to supply a bit to the hub until I realised the tuners use the whole usb2’s power and dwelled on it for a bit.

Re: PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
I ordered a mdl-0530. Hopefully it is not too dodge. The extra amp may come in handy one day if I use it for something else. No doubt the standards will all change again though.
Re: PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
I am getting a second PlayTV tuner to have five tuners. Should I plug them both into the usb3 hub and leave the usb2 port empty? I suppose it does not matter. Does the usb2 port enumerate before the usb3 port? Just wanting to pick which tuner to disable as the antenna strength will be less on one, thats all. I suppose I can just swap the antenna, so I typed all this for nothing ahaha.
The v2 is awesome, easily the best pvr, I hope they don’t stop making them. Maybe there is a new pvr in the works.

Re: PlayTV and usb3 compatibility
I have two PlayTV plugged into a powered USB 3 hub, connected to my V2. Works fine. I have a similar settup with my U4.
