Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Hi everyone
Thanks to all of the contributors - very helpful information. This is my first post.
I have a Hauppauge Dual HD tuner that came with a V2 and it works well - both extra tuners were detected by the V2. But when I connected it to my U4, the U4 only detected one tuner.
Also, I purchased separately another Hauppauge Dual HD tuner (not from Beyonwiz) and both the V2 and the U4 only detect one tuner.
I would be grateful for any help on these two issues.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Is your U4 running the latest 19.3_20211010 firmware?
It might be set to the wrong mode (bulk vs isochronous).
I can't recall exactly how the "bulk" setting affected operation, but I don't recall it manifesting as detection as a single tuner (rather it simply didn't work).
You can try the direction in the following thread to check and test though.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Hey MrQuade, thank you very much for the reply.
I checked the Beyonwiz site and the latest U4 version is 19.3 of 20191106. Is there another location for later updates?
I will check out the bulk vs synchronous link.
Thanks again

That is an old version; you can download the current build from here viewtopic.php?f=45&t=14964#p197882

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Check the version that is installed on your U4.
If you are on the "19.3" series firmware already, then you would have been offered an online update to the latest firmware already. (assuming your U4 is Internet-connected).
If you are pre-19.3, then definitely look into performing a USB update.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
I have the same issue but for my recently purchased V2.
I too wanted to upgrade to a 4 tuner version with a Hauppauge Dual HD tuner.
I thought it was set up okay, because 4 tuners are displayed as available.
When it comes to recording though, it too only recognises one of the dual tuners.
I set it to the correct as suggested mode (isochronous);
Have updated to the latest 2021 firmware.
Any ideas please, anyone, [noting that the V2 of "PaulB"] works okay with it ?

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
How are you determining these two facts?
So four tuners are showing when you look at the MENU->Information->Devices screen, but what is the V2 doing to limit you to three tuners?

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
I think you mean you want response to (?):
*I set it to the correct as suggested mode (isochronous), see as discussed/recommended in a previous forum;
I used the BulkOrIso.exe software (link) provided by this forum to change from Bulk to ISOCH (initial state of this tuner screenshot attached).
Have updated to the latest 2021 firmware.
By this I mean for the V2 firmware, again as provided by the forum link.
I have two Hauppauge Dual HD tuners and they have the same issue.
Do you need any more info (e.g. screenshots of Beyonwiz settings/state)?
Better still, do you want to borrow one of two Hauppauge Dual HD tuners to try yourself?
thanks.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Screenshot attached.
Omitted from last post.
The four tuners show as enabled. The last two C and D show as coming from the dual tuner.
When I go to record more than three different channels at different channel frequencies the V2 freezes.
Only three tuners are ever highlighted as operating when viewing on bottom right hand side of display screen, for A B C D.
I expected the same performance as my T4 (with 4 tuners installed).
Do need any more info?
thanks.

Please show us a screenshot of -
MENU>>Information>>Devices
MENU>>Setup>>Tuners>>Tuner configuration
Copy the /var/log/messages file to a USB thumb drive and attach it here (you'll probably have to add a ".txt" file extension when attaching it to the forum).
You can use the File Commander plugin (MENU>>Sources / Files) to retrieve a copy of the file. Navigate File Commander through Internal Flash / then "var", then "log" (/var/log/).
(There's a step-by-step here if you need it).

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Both tuners in the Hauppauge dongle appear to be in isoc mode and detected/attached okay -
I note that your unit reports as "rev C3I6", whereas others I've seen report as "rev C2I6".
Then we appear to get to the point where the poo hits the fan "unknown chip version Si2168-D60" -

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Any suggestions?
Do I throw them in the bin and try and find a workable twin tuner version somehow (but, how would I know prior to purchase)?
Do I get onto Hauppauge and discuss with them ...
I bought these through KOGAN, but would assume they are the same from other suppliers?

I use a used PlayStation PS3 twin tuner with the U4. (Ex eBay $30). I believe they work with the V2 but check with others before proceeding.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Paul,
many thanks for the option of using a Sony PS3 Tuner.
I'll hang off buying temporarily (this Sony version) and first see where my Hauppauge enquiry leads me (if anywhere!); hoping at the moment my investment is salvageable...
Wish I'd known this Sony option was available to begin with.
I see they're still available as-new/second-hand on eBay around ~ $30-$50.
{Thought I was being smart by buying the Hauppauge because Beyonwiz used to originally sell a version, as their rebadged brand ...? }

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
AFAIK, Beyonwiz never rebadged the Hauppauge dual tuners that it sold: they sold them as Hauppauge tuners. What appears to have happened is that Hauppauge has changed the chipset used in the tuner, probably twice, since Beyonwiz stopped selling the tuners, and the drivers for the tuner that are in the firmware haven't kept up.

FYI.
Did a google search and came up with this possible, potentially relevant forum.
https://forum.libreelec.tv/thread/2867- ... /?pageNo=1
You may have already seen?
Way beyond my ability to understand, but this link also suggests a Hauppauge Dual Tuner issue some time ago...?
Only one tuner supported under Linux, for this particular application/tuner.
They had some success in making it work, but Hauppauge may not yet have provided an update/patch.
May be useful in the discussion?

Peter (prl), can I at least be half right (in the rebadging stakes), seeing Beyonwiz put their name on the Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner as per the currently out of stock listing still in the "SHOP" ?

I suspect that is photoshopped on.
The tuner I received with my retail V2 has no branding.

Afterthought.
Maybe just as well I didn't send this picture then, to Hauppauge technical (in my enquiry/assistance on incompatible issues of their product with Beyonwiz now), perhaps?

AFAIK, there was some sort of distribution arrangement in place, so Hauppauge may know of Beyonwiz as an entity they supplied directly to. I just don't know that there was any additional work done to custom screen print the tuners.
There might be something that can be fixed in the drivers, but there may also be a dependency on the Linux kernel, which can be a bit harder to keep up to date on specialised devices like the V2.
I think the chances of getting something done about this would lie in the open source community rather than Hauppauge.
"Captain" on the OpenATV forums might have a clue. I haven't attempted to reach out to him for anything recently.

Thanks for the info.
I'm happy to donate one of my Hauppauge dual tuners to anyone with the knowhow, who wants it for investigatory/development/sorting-out work ...
Any takers?

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Response from HAUPPAUGE:
Hello,
There is a newer revision of the DualHD 204209 that requires a different firmware.
REV C3I6 requires the following firmware file https://github.com/LibreELEC/dvb-firmwa ... -d60-01.fw
Not sure how you would incorporate to your Beyonwiz, but in a linux environment it just needs to be copied to /lib/firmware
Now whether we are shipping the device in ISOC vs BULK mode I’m asking the engineers about this.
We had shipped almost all devices for last few years in BULK mode.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
An out-of the box V2 already has a dvb-demod-si2168-d60-01.fw file in /lib/firmware. You may want to save a copy of that before you replace it with the one from Hauppauge. Good luck!

See what you gents mean - not looking good, because of same version number as existing V2 file.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Their sizes are different though -
204 bytes for the existing /lib/firmware/dvb-demod-si2168-d60-01.fw file, whereas the "new" version is much much bigger @ 10,829 bytes.
Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Not good news.
Did as suggested, and replaced the Hauppauge driver in the firmware directory (saved/renamed old version several times onto laptop from thumb drive).
The new (much larger) driver is in the Beyonwiz "internal flash/lib/firmware" directory and the old one has been deleted.
Did a hard reboot (powered off/on).
If I try to record/display more than two different frequency channels the V2 hangs.
Don't think any of the Hauppauge ones are activated, even though they are as usual shown as being enabled.
Now only max of two tuners are active at any one time on the TV
Will do some further double-checking tomorrow.
Disappointing so far.
Other question:
Is the SD card supposed to become the "hdd" when rebooting the Beyonwiz, if the SD card is in the slot, with the 4TB one connected via the USB3 port becoming (being allocated) as a USB drive?
I have to leave the SD card for the USB3 connected drive to be allocated as hdd (for default Recording) when hard rebooting.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Yes, the SD card is always mounted as HDD if present.
As for any additional drives, the order of SDA, SDB etc is not reliably predictable depending on your hardware type and arrangement.
Having the SD card as HDD is actually desirable, since this is the default location for backups and timeshift.
The default recording directory can easily be pointed at a different storage device.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Ho hum.
So I went back to the original version and rebooted. Checked that it was the old version (~ 2k) before rebooted.
Now I still can't see any tuners being used from the Hauppauge and only the two internal are working.
[Aside: Looking at the other firmware listed for this application, i.e. .20, .40 versions, they all seem all around at least 10K?]
Will do a full system reboot from USB memory stick and see if that gets me back at least to be able to utilise one of the two Hauppauge tuners... and an original known starting point state.
Then try again stepping through the whole process, to see if I originally stuffed up something along the way previously - can't see how I could have though ?
Sound like a plan?
PS: everything else seems okay, apart from the V2 easily hanging up when trying to record/view more than two different frequency operations.
PSS: tried a Sony PS3 plays station box with two tuners built in and that worked okay. Only trouble I got too much interference from, I guess, longer and unshielded leads by the looks.

Make sure you re-check the Hauppauge tuner with a full power cycle too. Make sure the firmware is completely cleared out.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
See what you mean.
Okay. Will do the full cycle - which I assume you mean leave the Hauppauge tuner plugged into the Beyonwiz when powering system off/on ?
I'm not knowledgeable enough to interpret the further Hauppauge advice below, or at this stage be able to do the checks below.
Is our system the latest variation of Linux (Ubunta ??), ... ?
Assume we are running some version of Linux - what can I tell him (or do you want to communicate direct if/when I don't have any joy with my next attempts?) ?
Further info from Hauppauge.
Going back to your previous email.
The firmware file is about 10.5kb
You should run a md5 checksum to make sure
$ md5sum dvb-demod-si2168-d60-01.fw and you are looking for the following result 2EFD859C5454300771F10C5F922AAF86
Anything else and the file is no good.
The tuner you have is compatible with Ubuntu variations of Ubuntu. Also any Distribution of Linux that is running a kernel higher than 5.0 should be fine with it as long that you add the firmware file.
Raspberry Pi’s also support it. On the Android side the only known device to support is the Nvidia Shield (technically the new revision not yet). We have provided NVidia with the firmware and they are pushing at update at the end of March.
I’m not familiar with Beyonwiz PVR. Never heard of it until your email us about it. I assume it is running some type of variation of Linux?
As long that the kernel is higher than 5.0 and you have the correct firmware file (check the md5 sum) it should load. You can run $ dmesg to see the output and you can also check /dev/dvb/ for adapters0 and adapters1. Normally that means the tuner is loaded and running.
No /dev/dvb location means not loaded.

If I understood you correctly you have such a box ?
Beyonwiz V2 PVR Media Box - Beyonwiz
Specifications Twin Tuner as Standard – Triple or Quad Tuner available via Single ($50) or Twin ($100) USB Tuners (Sold Separately) Huawei Hisilicon…
beyonwiz.com.au
If so you are properly completely wrong here
LibreELEC is a operating system for Raspberry Pi and HTPC including Kodi as software.
We have a rather large collection of DVB firmware files, so likely the Hauppauge support just googled for that file and found it at our repository

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
The .fw file is just a binary blob that gets sent to the tuner to run internally there. The architecture of the host PC/PVR doesn't really care what's inside that file.KEL wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 09:45If so you are properly completely wrong here

However, the driver that does run in the PVR does need to know how to properly communicate with the tuner.
I am a long way from knowing how all this glues together, but there is probably a mismatch between the driver and that firmware blob if the hardware in the tuner is different enough. I had been hoping that the replacement blob was just a slight modification of the original, and the interfaces with the V2 would be the same. It seems not. Some updates to the V2 driver probably need to happen. And if the V2's kernel is not recent enough, the driver may have to be backported (which is something that needed to happen with the Sony PlayTV driver).
To say that LibreELEC is *completely* wrong is a bit of an overstatement. The V2 is similar enough to something like raspberry Pi that you would expect the same drivers (recompiled for the V2 architecture of course) to run just fine. The firmware blob is portable between system, since it's something that the tuner runs.

Further comment. Not sure if relevant.
I was hoping/thinking (benefit of the doubt) for return post from LibreELEC that the author meant in saying:
"If so you are properly completely wrong here", the author meant that I was in the wrong forum for this query. Based on below.
Namely, I started my first post to them as:
Not sure I've got myself on the right forum?
I've got an issue with this tuner for my Beyonwiz V2 PVR.
The PVR only recognises one of the two tuners available.
Question:
Do I pursue my attempts at this stage with the Hauppauge or "hang off" for further changes/updates that need to happen to overall Beyonwiz firmware/software?
(not sure I'm expressing myself properly here, based on my lack of in-depth working knowledge in this area).

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
Doing some checking before I do another USB system download.
Are all these three files supposed to be there for the "unzipped" binary V2 firmware (now on my USB thumb drive)?
Particularly the:
(a) dvd-mod-si2168-d60-01.fw
and
(b) imageversion
See Attached Screenshot.
Why was at (a) above included here especially for this 2021 upgrade?
Could I stick the updated dvd-mod version here (on the thumb drive) already to save me doing the install of this old version,
then having to do a delete and then installing the new?
If I did that, could I stuff anything up for the reload?
What's the "imageversion" file please (is it just a record of the obvious - and/or does it get recorded with the installation somewhere, to view with the "Menu" system-info ).
Remember, I'm just an "Apprentice"; so am probably asking obvious questions.

Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
That dvb-demod-si2168-d60-01.fw file appears to be a copy of the Hauppauge firmware file that you copied from the V2. It is not extracted from the fimware zip file you downloaded.
Whoa!
If you're going to try again with the updated si2168-d60 firmware file, why are you reflashing the firmware again?
It's just a text file showing the firmware version - have a look at its contents.
Re: Hauppauge Dual HD Tuner V2 - U4 Problem
More info from Hauppauge:
Did you ever have a dualhd working with it? Is it a recommended model by them?
You need 4.17 or higher for both tuners to work
https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ ... nTV-dualHD
Yes Jerry.
But only one of the tuners out of the dual worked, even though the Beyonwiz said both tuners in the same dual tuner are "enabled"
That would be correct if you said that beyonwiz runs on kernel 4.4, since kernel 4.7 was the first to support only one tuner on the that dualhd model. 4.11 added support for single tuner support on the north American model and 4.17 finally had support for both tuners.
Looks like Beyonwiz would need a higher kernel.

Will try again without "flashing".
I have been deleting all files from the memory stick, before I copy anything over/on-to it.
At least I thought I had,
Don't know why I picked up the Hauppauge driver again.
Hence my question to verify, and check if I was the idiot with finger-trouble again; plus to ensure it was/wasn't supposed to be there.
Also, USB thumb drive keeps coming up with a error every time I insert the memory stick into my laptop,
It asks if I want to do a scan; I say yes to fix, then it says there's no problem.
Just to be sure - will go and buy a new USB stick as well.
